Exploring in a Cobra

The T6 can outjump the cobra.

To check out ship cost, go to edshipyard.com and configure your a ship.

Basically Class D everything except FSD which should be A, and you probably want a reasonable fuel scoop (but they don't weigh anything, so focus on refuel time vs cost)

Up to you whether to take shields. Personally i do.

This is a Cobra for 4.5 million that will get you around 26LY jump distance: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=302,,2-6u6u6Q5K5K5K6k,4-4mpT7Q4mpT2jw2UI (dropping to a 3D power plant will get you a little extra range if you want).

5 million for a T6 with a 30LY range: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=30W,,2-5K6u6Q3m5K3m6k,50ompV7Q42jw2UI

So, for a little extra cost, then T6 will get you the better explorer ship.

Of course, what you really want is an Asp, but an Asp decently configured for exploration runs to about 14 million, but you need around half a million for insurance.

very handy tool, never knew about this.

I have to disagree. For one thing an explorer ship has no need to be combat ready, just good at what it does. So taking a clearly non combat ship seems more immersive.
Well, that's how it is at present but that's because we know there are no dangers out there. But that's a bit of "outside of the game" thinking. In strict roleplay we shouldn't know for certain that there isn't anything to worry about.

I don't know if ED models this in any way, but the T6 obviously has a lot more surface area than the Cobra (less mass but more internal space). So it is fairly logical that it would be more susceptible to external heat sources. Therefore, it should reasonably be more likely to suffer damage if you hyperspace into a close binary system.

Anyway, one of the best aspects of ED is that we can all choose to play it as we like so vive la difference!

I am out exploring in a cobra and haven't got the top grade fad. I'm not going so far out that stars are really widely spaced so my shorter jump range isn't an issue. In fact as I return home, i can see that I'm followi g the same route as a previous explorer because about every other jump I see his name on bodies as first to find. The jumps in between are blank. Big jumps don't equal more return or better sights, just quicker journey to a particular target, so it all depends if getting to a nebulae or the galactic core quickly is your thing. If you just want to wander out and maybe get some first to finds, you don't need to sell your first Born for an A FSD

Just my opinion anyway

Absolutely, and we come up with our own reasons for kitting out. You're right about potential hostile aliens, but a number of explorers also went with minimal defenses as well, knowing they couldn't stop, say, an angry tribe they came across, but could stop a bandit or wildlife. The way I see it, this is passive exploration - But if you went out with the hopes of making first contact (ie one they populate closed sectors) then I'd be going in a Cobra or ASP... probably an ASP ;)

I'd pretty much agree with Calvert. Really how many times has the jump range prevented you from getting somewhere? I ran a T6 during Beta 1.1 and maybe it's not representative of how it plays now, or perhaps I was doing something wrong, but I always found it ran too hot for my liking. It was basically in one of three states: nearly overheating, overheating or taking damage from overheating. In comparison a Cobra is a chiller cabinet. The other factor is that with NPC's getting friskier, returning to civilisation to sell your data has got more risky.

I would have gone with the Cobra. Jump Range is overrated for all but the most extreme exploration journeys (we're talking weeks in real life here) and anything bigger than the Cobra, the cost of Wear and Tear will eat your brainz.

IMO, you need two things in a good exploration ship: good, unobstructed cockpit with wide field of view and long jump range. Type 6 has both, cobra - not so much.

The only thing an Explorer can do outside of pinging their scanner is take pictures - the type 6 cockpit is much better for that.

I would agree that being back to civilisation with frisky NPC'S is exciting. A bit like the original game after a long spell of combat - you just wanted to get back to save the game!

I would like to see the outer edges of inhabited space to be a bit more wild west. :)

i just got back from exploring in a kitted aspwear and tear in an asp will eat you alive. and a type 6 also takes considerable damage from high speed super cruising.
the cobra is where its at in my opinion. also since interdictions are up there is a benefit to being faster than anything else. a type 6 cant outrun everything lile a cobra can.
a field repair module is a good idea and submit to interdictions so you dont take damage.
interdictions stop about 600~ly from inhabited space.

I think the adder is the way to go, the views are not that great but being able to avoid interdiction and the huge fuel tank are good to have. I scoop every jump I can but sometimes ya find yourself with a bunch of no scoopables between you and your destination, I lfind not having to go around these regions a definite plus. The view I can work around and now that I am practiced I really have no trouble finding things without an advanced scanner just takes a little longer. The wear and tear is nice and manageable aswell.
