PC Gamer Article on 1.2 Wings

Interesting read. Thanks.

Looking forward to checking out the larger USS's and seeing what challenges they pose.

I hope they scale per size of the wing. For example, a 2-man wing won't get a 4-man instance and vice versa.

I also hope they add some sort of Hiring Board, where people can post up that they are looking for a wing, and can easily join open wings without having to go out looking for them.

Goes back to a suggestion I made, probably echoed by others before me, that we could be able to create templated entries into the Bulletin Board for this kind of thing.

I think 4 player wings is quite limiting too.

Frankly I would like to see large fleets of players that can completely blockade a system as that would instigate real conflict between different player groups and make the universe more hostile and intriguing exploring and avoiding the different systems.

Having only 4 players limits the threat - you will always know that encounters will be a maximum of 4.

None of that is supported by core game mechanics.

I think 4 is a decent number, gives enough room to have a few wings and other players in an instance / island. Interesting to read you will see status of the wingmen in the UI, that's another reason not to have more as it would take up a lot of UI space.

That's the other game though, not this one.

I do not keep up much with Elite's dev blog etc. What is the developers long term vision for the game? Not arguing with you as I hop between this and the other game so I do not mind if this game has another goal. Just wondering what their vision is?

Case in point: pirate killing missions.

How it works now: you take a pirate killing mission and the game increases the odds that any USS will contain pirates for you only.

How it should work #1: the background sim determines that piracy is on the rise and increases the number of USSs in the system that will have pirates in them for everyone. The same BG sim trigger that increased the pirate USS also causes more/higher paying pirate killing missions to be on offer in the system.

How it should work #2: There are no "USS". There are persistent NPCs and traders in the system, everyone sees them in SC, the background sim determines that more pirates are needed so we all see lots of pirates interdicting NPC and player ships, anyone can interdict the pirates or drop at wakes to help out. This additional pirate activity triggers suitable mission availibility.

I see your point an agree. While having USS's spawn just for me when I'm hunting a pirate it is all very boring and predictable.

thats good to see and makes for interesting reading, pity there is no NPC support, but then I guess this is really just adding in the missing multiplayer featire that is needed

What is needed is a scanner so you know what is in the USS before you enter it. I am slightly disappointed that the Wing is limited to 4 players and there isn't the concept of a Solo Wing, so that if I am playing in Solo I can choose to have an NPC AI wing. I was also hoping a Wing would be a faction and therefore could take ownership.

That said its a step up for multiplayer.

Just wanted to point you towards Sandro's response to this in the article:

'While the coordinated firepower of a wing will be much increased, the four-pilot limit has been designed to prevent a squadron from owning a system. "It allows multiple wings to be present at any given location and it prevents a single wing from being able to completely dominate through sheer numbers," says Sammarco of the pilot cap. "There’s always room in any star system for more players than any single wing can accommodate, but at the same time, a wing of four still represents a significant increase of capability over a lone vessel provided players cooperate effectively."'

Might give you a better idea as to why the decision was made.

I like it, 4 players isn't enough to overwhelm a single player if he's in a larger ship.

I also like the sound of dangerous uss. This might help solo big ships make some more money, they can take wing missions for higher pay but increased difficulty.

I am a lone wolf.

Why can't I hire a NPC wingman or 2 or 3?
Why is the intention, that it's possible to do "wingmen-missions" alone, i.e. hauling big stacks in multiple trips, instead of thinking about the idea, to just hire some NPCs to help me achieve my goal?
Why so limited thinking?

Just want to clarify something, I can purchase 3 type-9's, protect them with my Conda and each ship will haul cargo for me?

NPC Wingmen most likely still will come. They need NPC dialogs and some improvements in AI.

I can imagine this will drive a lot of single online players into solo mode, as packs of 4 pirates come down on them - obviously some people will work as transport & escort, but for players like myself who generally work alone (and don't have many / any friends who play elite dangerous) it'll be solo mode for busy pirating areas.

No I dont. I want the game to determine USS content from the game world context i.e. the backround sim. I bought ED to play in a shared universe, not a series of my own little personal ones. I hate this kind of auto-leveling in all games. Id rather jump into a USS, get my ass kicked, and come back later better prepared or with some help, rather than have the game just dumb it down for me.

Exactly this.

Having only 4 players limits the threat - you will always know that encounters will be a maximum of 4.

.... or multiples of four - there would be the possibility for more than two wings to exist in the same instance - possibly as many as eight (if everyone's connections were up to it).

I must admit I had dreams of Elite going towards more Eve style player-controlled systems (as there are near infinite systems so player systems would not hamper lone players too much). If that's not the devs vision for the game though, fair enough as there will be other games that fill that niche.

Looking good. I just hope peer to peer is up to the challenge...

Would be great if devs could clarify about the USS scalability concerns. I personally hope that what the article meant is that there will be from 1.2 onwards tougher USS out there in general, and not just tailored to wings?

On the 4 player cap I suspect this is also due to the instancing limits we have today, and so to offer a chance for several wings existing together in the same instance, possibly more than 2.

No, just no man.... I don't want this to become another version of Eve. I have nothing agaisnt Eve I just don't want to see that happen here because after so long only those who play in large groups will get enjoyment where as the rest those who want to solo will be locked out of systems because the will be destroyed by the bigger group.

The wing of 4 is a great opportunity for collaborative haunting and pirating.
On the other hand I am somewhat concerned about the 4guys gang scaring traders in a specific system.
Hope Frontier will have apropriate answers to that threat. I don't wanna be forced into group/solo play.
So for lone traders hiring NPC wings and/or much more intense activity of System Security is to take place also.
(Only.... hiring wings will cool down my profits 8-( )

Miklos
