PC Gamer Article on 1.2 Wings

The wing of 4 is a great opportunity for collaborative haunting and pirating.
On the other hand I am somewhat concerned about the 4guys gang scaring traders in a specific system.
Hope Frontier will have apropriate answers to that threat. I don't wanna be forced into group/solo play.
So for lone traders hiring NPC wings and/or much more intense activity of System Security is to take place also.
(Only.... hiring wings will cool down my profits 8-( )

Not that fussed with the wings update for me Elite was always a solitary game and I'm quite happy pootling around on my own. Hopefully it will add to others enjoyment of the game though and move everything a step forward.

This will be a great improvement to the game and add a huge amount to gameplay. I'm also very glad they are limiting the group size to four - for exactly the reason that Sandro stated.

I feel the same, but it's obviously super-important for the more social pilots among us.

No I dont. I want the game to determine USS content from the game world context i.e. the backround sim. I bought ED to play in a shared universe, not a series of my own little personal ones. I hate this kind of auto-leveling in all games. Id rather jump into a USS, get my ass kicked, and come back later better prepared or with some help, rather than have the game just dumb it down for me.

As I said somewhere up above, I think the problem with the USS isn't there random, gamey nature, it's the fact that it's so poorly disguised. Looking for targets in a system shouldn't be about wandering around until you randomly find one -- it should be something you actively do on your system (Orrery!) map by analysing interesting locations/behaviour. The USS can be randomly generated, just as long as the player can interact with them in a way that's a bit less lazy than randomly bumping into them. But, that's off-topic really.

The big issue I could see about player controlled space is that a large fleet would just camp the systems with the most Rare/ Resources. Could you imagine if LAve and the other high pop systems with the most rares was all under one groups control? It would be game over for a lot of us.

Except you won't appear in their instance because of the cap. Or you could drop into private/solo for that system.

I think they'll add NPC wings. Such situations encourage people to play together. There'd be a real demand for escorts and other players can provide such services.

Sandro mentions "fuel exchange limpets", if these have to take up Internals, then a "fuel scoop with limpets" would be the sensible and logical equipment upgrade. Using a whole slot for just fuel limpets is a bad idea. I assume that there would then be four to six limpets, each transferring a ton of fuel.

I really want to see:-
  • Multiple admins for private groups
  • Naming of private groups (and wings) - moderated or not.
I'd like to see:-
  • Friends on the Galaxy Map.
  • USS's being less "U" and more "I". Identifiable Signal Sources, even if it requires a "signal scanner" utility slot item. Debris Field Signal Source, Weapons Fire Signature, Ship Transponder Signal, Ship in Distress, etc. then at least you have an idea if it is worth leaving super-cruise.
  • Plot route to friend. Select a player on your friends list and route to their location.
  • A better way to transfer cargo (or funds) between ships. Logically, all you need is a "Transfer to" as a third option on the cargo menu. If Seeking Luxuries traders can magically take your cargo and give you money without docking or using "cargo limpets" then cargo and money should be transferable between players in the same way. If that incurs GAT (Galactic Added Tax) on each transaction or some other in-game mechanic or requires you to be in station, fine. If I can give people money with my phone now, then doing the same on a spaceship in the 34th Century should be just as easy. GalPay, ZaonceApp?
  • An alphanumeric virtual keypad in the galaxy map for Oculus users (turned on when 3D is selected) - This would complete VR support within the game. Currently this is a pain, as you have to take off the visor to type in system names. I know how big an ask this could be, but if you've played on DK2 then you'll know what a difference this would make.

In last Dev Update Michael said that you will be able to see your friends and wing members on galaxy and system map in 1.2.

OK lets hope is in a good way ...

I really hope this is not increasing the extent to instances are tailored to individual players/groups as that would be a big backwards step IMO.

I also getting a sinking feeling that FD are very wedded to the transient USS idea as a content device. They suck (USS's that is - not FD generally).

Yeh think we are gonna be stuck with USS and they do indeed suck.

Yeah I agree - from a point of randomness in a journey they are ok but basing missions on them hasn't worked and I just avoid such missions these days.

I really think Elite would be helped by an in system coordinates system or positioning grid.

Missions would go from "Wander aimlessly until you find ITEM" to "go HERE get ITEM"

USS points should be used for random encounters - ships in distress / traders and so on.

So no info on official forums? Nice ! Need to visit others side to get ED information, WOW.

Questions: What about groups ? Let's see that I have a group of 16, everybody on same instance? Could I create 4 wings ? Then ALWAYS the 16 playes will share same instance ?

Listen mate, I'm also a trader, at some point, we will have to hire an escort, we will have to down our profit. This is how it was supposed to be since the beginning....

Yes, of course the worry is the game simply detects a Wing so automatically creates ramped up events... which seems unrealistic of course. I guess if the gamelpay that comes out of it is OK/better, then fair enough.

As you surely noticed, I've put this into paranthesis for a reason. Don't take it too serious, I am fully aware that nothing is for free but death, only this will cost your life.

I'm also primarily a trader and I would like to hire Player fighter escorts (or group with other traders for some "Convoy" type action), not necessarily because I need to but because I want to.

I think 4 player wings is quite limiting too.

Frankly I would like to see large fleets of players that can completely blockade a system as that would instigate real conflict between different player groups and make the universe more hostile and intriguing exploring and avoiding the different systems.

Having only 4 players limits the threat - you will always know that encounters will be a maximum of 4.

Worst Idea Ever. You want Eve. Eve wants you. Get married! :)
