Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread [See new thread]

The thread just merged wasn't initially about open vs solo modes in any way or form, so I'm disappointed at this merge. I may not have agreed with the OP, but there was a debate to be had. Now I can't have it because the thread has been pulled into an unrelated one because some people will talk about open vs solo in every thread regardless.

I'm disappointed.

Here was the OP's "Too Long, Didn't Read" summary:

TLDR:

The cost of trading in open is currently minimal, it looks like it is likely to increase. The added cost will be a higher risk of damage and destruction (so less risk weighted expected profit) and Cargo capacity lost to defensive modules (so less profit per trip).

There is virtually no benefit to trading in open as opposed to Mobius or Solo. The most efficient and rational reaction for traders is not to volunteer for added costs where there is no benefit to them.

It looks like traders in open will need to add heavier weapons (increasing fuel costs) and sacrifice cargo capacity (for higher class shields and shield cells) in order to adequately defend themselves.

Therefore, it looks like trading in in open will be less profitable than in Solo/Mobius.

I'm disappointed.

The merged thread was about open vs. solo modes from the first post.

The OP is titled "No incentives to trade in open(long)" - there is an implicit reference to the game modes and incentives (or lack thereof) for playing in open. As the thread has developed, it has shifted much further towards the oft repeated discussion on the relative merits of the three game modes and the ability to switch between them. For this reason the thread has been merged.

combat logging is a bug, its one which FD have categorically stated they consider an exploit but is simply a git to fix due to the P2P nature of the game.

now prats sitting in stations however is an interesting one, I have my own opinions on the people who do this, but either way, if FD decide that they think it is not cricket, I would hope this should be completely fixable via in game systems. Whether they choose to or not depends on whether they feel it is within the spirit of the game however and I am unsure as to their stance on this..

Then we have an accord...I consider solo/open hoppers as not far removed from your station camper. Both activities are within game rules and what FD think is cricket or not is not set in stone.

Unless the primary reasons for the open/solo bond are financial/technical.

You do know people are not just traders or fighters but both right? People will play both, but they'll play open in a fighter and solo in their type 6 or whatever. It's already the case pretty much.

<snip>

This is pretty much a straw man argument. There are tons of people who play in Open as traders in freighters. Just go back and read through the 240 odd pages and you'll find them littered with people coming in and saying so.

This means the basis of your argument is a false assumption.

And yes there is no reason to trade in open, saying i have t6 and want to buy rares is lave area, total failure, to many beggers and pkers, sorry

that was my opinion from a month ago, and that has not changed. However what i did, i cleared my save, and playing mainly bh and ch which standing for cmdr hunting, specially traders, no begging, no mercy. Love this game

Tons is an exaggeration. Just go into open an make a tally of cobras/vipers vs freighters.

I'm open to suggestions to improve the game, I'm just not keen on just tinkering with the game to make it easier for anyone....

Feel free to shoot down some of my earlier suggestions.....

- Pirates should face tougher sanctions - Bounties should be worked off via fed/imperial missons....time is worth more than money in this game, more effective police response, Larger stations should turn hostile, open fire on sight if you're wanted.

- Separate solo and open

- Implement SOS Beacons

- Improve Defensive weapons..limpets, booby trapped cargo, rear view camera so we can lock on missiles while running.

- NPC wingmen

We have some agreement, but those features just don't exist at the moment and until they do many of us will trade in closed.

Not really because Michael Brookes - the Big Cheese himself has said the 3 modes are working as intended with no intention to make changes.

so you already have your answer on this, indeed you had it back in 2013. Of course it is your perogative to dislike that decision but it is what it is.

just like I will have to lump it IF the official line is that ship destruction within a space station is perfectly fine, so long as game mechanics allow you to get away with it, regardless of whether I personally like it or not.
