Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread [See new thread]

Yeah, I realise that the brutality in open mode may be a bit exaggerated by this forum, and that it's not always that bad. Though many, including myself, has the impression that open mode is a very dangerous place, and that's enough to discourage it.

I've seen a combined total of 7 Commanders since the start of Gamma, the longest interaction was with one Commander when we sat outside a station (he had just moved to the region) and I was explaining what was of note nearby, for about 5 minutes.
Not exactly the swarms of psychotic teenagers that some would have you believe. That said, I still fully support the idea that people should play however they want, the simple reality is (personally speaking) that it doesn't affect me in any way at all.

See, I feel it does affect me simply because right now I'm a pirate/trader and there just aren't enough targets for me....how selfish...however I'm fully committed to staying in open and being the target once I get the funds. or maybe I'll bottle it....

Seonid you must be very far out....I regularly see 4 or five CMDRs in a system all at once.

Im around Founders and Achenar normally. I occasionally see the odd commander, rarely two. Maybe the matchmaking favours geographical proximity.

There's no 'maybe'. It's designed to use geography and connection speed when instancing. Wings will have to work differently.

Maybe some of us wanted an offline game [THAT WE WERE PROMISED!] and didn't want to play an online game at all. Playing solo is a protest vote as far as I'm concerned.

From my experience of dozens of online games, there are good players and there are those who's sole aim is to ruin other people's enjoyment of it. Sadly, I have noticed an increase in the latter as games go on. Maybe some players get bored and decide to harass others instead for their own amusement, maybe there are other reasons. However, it has happened with EVERY online game I have ever played and I have no doubt the Elite will be no different. Also, as the player base increases, commodity markets will get flooded quickly which then makes trading a complete no-go for new players and the first thing they need to do is trek halfway across the map to find a quieter system. I would rather have a single player game where I can play it the way I want to, even playing solo, I don't get that luxury because the economy depends on open, group and solo players alike.

Me too. I've been playing MMO's a long time and the basic rule of thumb is - the more unconstrained PvP is, the more full of jerks the game will be and the shorter its commercial lifespan.

Unless PvP is its Unique Selling Point, which it is not for ED.

The OP is titled "No incentives to trade in open(long)" - there is an implicit reference to the game modes and incentives (or lack thereof) for playing in open. As the thread has developed, it has shifted much further towards the oft repeated discussion on the relative merits of the three game modes and the ability to switch between them. For this reason the thread has been merged.

Well for myself, I wrote the OP to discuss the proposed changes to the interdiction model and the impact that will have - which I expect will push people from open into solo/group while they are trading. It wasn't really intended to be about the open/solo divide in general, it was about the changes. However now that I found the thread and read through it I can see alot of the discussion is about the broader open/solo issue which was probably not surprising given the title I chose. So I suppose I can't complain about the merge, though I would have preferred if it had developed into a discussion on the topic I wanted to talk about. Ho hum, I will pick a better title next time I try to start a thread conversation.

It's a no-brainer that the changes will make Open less attractive. it's only a question of scale. It's pretty certain people aren't playing in Solo because Open isn't dangerous enough for their tastes.

I'm a trader, but I think your argument makes perfect sense. The option of solo mode makes open a shallower place.
What I want is of course to avoid the likes of you :) Considering the size of the universe it's not that difficult, but the by far easiest way to do it is to go solo. If I go to open, and get shot down by a pirate, I'd be angry with myself for not going solo. If I didn't have the choice to go solo though, I'd rather think that I shouldn't go to that or that system, I should have better defences, and so forth.

IRL, when I drive to work in the morning I really don't want to interact with other cars, so if I could beam myself into an alternate reality where I was the only person on the road, I'd gladly do that. I don't have that choice however, so I'm stuck in the traffic jam.

Both Tagos and Fian make sense,it does not change, most in PVP are thinking COD in space yeeeeessss !
Thats why I have gone solo/Mobius, very few are "real" Pirates, most are jerks looking for an easy kill.
Countless threads on this issue does not change my views, no matter how much the PVP crowd holler.. :D
Most of the people there I would avoid in RL, why should I put up with them here ?
Ahh and when you Bounty hunt in Open, the holler goes that you made your Python in Solo :D
Its a kindergarten, like children beraved of empathy, all the see is their own perspective.
To the few Pirates I do respect for their balanced views ( Derath, Titus Balls, K:KRemmen ect) Salute !
I will not bother further with this thread.
Cheers Cmdr's

I think you're right a longer FSD timer will drive people out of open. I do think the timer is too short though, it's almost impossible to do anything in a fighter that isn't a spec.

They need to beef up the trader defensive weapons at the same time, limpet mines for example, rear facing turrets etc....take with one hand give with the other.

Personally I really like the idea of booby trapped barrels.....coupled with a faster fed response time.
Does the pirate take the time to scan the barrels to detect a bomb or scoop them all up before the cops arrive?

It's a no-brainer that the changes will make Open less attractive for the minority that still trade exclusively in the Rares clusters. it's only a question of scale. It's pretty certain people aren't playing in Solo because Open isn't dangerous enough for their tastes.

There. Fixed that for you.

Fact is, plenty of traders in open don't have a problem with interdictions.

I wonder if the lave area is frequented as much in solo mode....I bet it is....Grrr, they should be in open at the bottom of the food chain.

Hell yeah.... With all those Rares at Diso, Lave, Orrere, Uszaa (etc)........we're flying under your nose every day.......... hehehe....... :D

So the cloaking device did make it to Elite Dangerous.....

That's one way to look at it I guess.

haha Yeah.......if you think of us as Klingon "Bird of Prey" types.....maybe even Chicken Hawks.... :D it might ease the pain.....
...
Please dont take any of this personally.........please....I see some of the pirates on here are great characters......its just not how I want to "play it my way"........I prefer a book to a movie........I prefer the radio to tv.........I like to explore, mine, trrade...and do a little fighting, but as it please me........thats all....dont want to ruin your fun.....just want a "space ship" and a clear letterbox to get out in to the Galaxy............and of course, getting my ride shot out from under me every 5 mins by NPCs or Pirates, is NOT what I am after.....thats why I resist it.....not to upset you............but just so I can keep having "my fun".......like you want to have your fun.....
...
We're cool.....

Re Solo, I was there a week ago and was interdicted twice by some beefy NPCs so its not all plain sailing. I just wish my BB was faster so I could go Open more. Beta Open for me was like a slideshow.
