Sorry, I need to qualify my statements a bit: a good Speedball 2 remake.
The main games that inspired me have either been done to death...or have recently been re-imagined. I favour those that have respected the roots of the IP such as Elite, Grimrock (Dungeon master) and the upcoming revamp of Homeworld looks promising.
I think these games illustrate the key to a good honest revamp/sequel....don't let the big publishers anywhere near the franchise

Remakes for Lords of Midnight and Doomdark's Revenge have been around for a good decade, eventually with the support from Mike Singleton and it was then upgraded and released even to iPhone, blackberry etc. http://thelordsofmidnight.com/ .. and the original 1999/2000+ remake site is still there with lots of info: http://icemark.com/.

I guess by "remake" I sorta mean something very similar but not identical. A real LOM/Doomdark's for 2015 in a similiar vein to Grimrock and Dungeon Master. Doomdark's was the first game I played on my first real PC - I got a spectrum emulator and played it back in 1995 I think.
This would probably be a really easy game to make as well.
