EliteMeet Nov 2nd 2013

Always an enjoyable show. I really like to listen, sit back with some tea and at the same time 'drink in' some community spirit.

As for the coming influx of young people. I like young people. I have no problem interacting with them. As long as the legends of these forums - and you know who you are - give the good example of being well mannered and civil and as long as we all make it a point to carry that forward, newcomers will hopefully adopt the same behavior.

An interesting exchange there about skill and age. I am not worried. Obviously some of us have played more through the years than others have. But if you are around 40 or older, your experience both in games and life will be equal to the reaction times of the younger generations. And even our trigger finger will be adequate.

I have found myself winning games in Battlefield Play4Free very regularly against much younger people. What I might lack in quick response or the ability to 'work myself into a zone' I make up for using tactics and 'thinking it over'. With some life experience may come spectacles but also insight into how people think, react, move etc.

So I think 40 years is not old at all. We are at the prime of our lives, combining agility and wisdom to beat our opponents. And if you are up against a big meanie, call me in, I'll try to be there to back you up, ye olde spacers! :D

Well said that old fart ! I agree :d

Great episode.
Thank you all for your kind supporting words about the moderation team. :)
We are all starting to prepare for the influx of new members will we have here in the forums early next year.

Already we have noticed quite an increase of new members.

With the help of your kind selves, we will all be working together to continue to make this place a fantastic place to be. :)

You mean this picture ...

And I can see why you think he looks like David Braben, but I didn't see it until you said.
(I didn't even realise it was THE Frank until I got home - sorry Frank)
(again ... I look stupid in this picture .... one day there will be a good picture of me ... and in focus too!)

Yep that's the pic. Glad someone could see what I meant. :)

I did a lot of not recognising people as well. The only person whose identity I sussed immediately was OneVigor. He stuck out like a sore thumb. I thought that Psykokow's little "Introduce yourself" bit would help, but my memory fades fast. This might've had something to do with a little experiment I was conducting as well. I wanted to see if the Oculus Rift could make me feel nauseous so I had a few beers before trying it for the second time. I guess decades of FPS has hardened my senses. Not even the slightest flicker of a disturbance in my stomach.

As for this whole looking like David Braben thing.. Well it's hard for me to be objective, but if anyone thinks there really is a resemblance I could march into Frontier Developments with as much confidence as I can muster, and demand Michael Brookes release some footage of some new actual gameplay.

The beginnings of a David Braben lookalike contest!

Nah, that would be silly. But our human pattern recognition ability can play tricks. There is a great video of a song called 'Red Rain' by Peter Gabriel. In some shots it is Sean Connery, I swear.

We humans don´t look at faces very well after the first time. Once we know a face, we need only bits and pieces of a face for our brains to connect it to the whole facial pattern we stored in memory. Certain angles and lighting could make anyone look like...the Prince of Wales, if only for a moment. :)

If you take a newsreader on tv next time you see him, or her. Watch him closely, study his face, see what it really looks like and you will be astonished how much you never picked up. Suddenly you realize the classification of what head/type that person has.

It's all about genetics.

Supposedly, after the last Ice Age, fewer than 5,000* humans remained on Earth in scattered tribes. That is a fairly small genome base for what is now over 6 billion souls.

It's likely that Frank and Sir David Braben share a very ancient common ancestor - and it's also why people can look alike even though they might not be nominally related at all.

* The figure may not be accurate, but it is a very small number nevertheless.

The implication that I might have anything in common with psykokow is rather worrying.....

Just got Darren's email through from Eventbrite.

It was a really good event. It felt different from LaveCon too which is great , I was worried when I saw the room layout that it would be more formal than planned but it wasn't .

Very funny having people come up to you and shake your hand saying I don't know you , but I know you voice .....

A big thank you to George who bought me a drink at the bar saying better get the celebrity a drink.

Pretty sure with the whole Movember thing he got confused and thought I was Wayne Rooney :)
(I really miss my goatee)

Any news about this Financial Times article? I am remembering events correctly? There is one coming out isn't there?

Yes, I had a good chat with the guy writing it (which hopefully isn't too much of a mistake on my part!). He asked for my forum handle so he could let me know when it's out - I'll pass the message on if nobody else spots it first.

As I recall, it's for the weekend supplement so we'll most likely hear on a Saturday or a Sunday.

Consider the fact that humans have somewhere between 20%-30% genes in common with yeast and it's not that big a stretch of the imagination;)

Also remember that Psykokow is 95% in common with a banana
actually we all have 95% in common with a banana but I like teasing with Psykokow :D
