Even my car has a rear view camera

How about being constructive?
I am with you on this one. I bet that the real reason is that it will kill the performance, surely for XBox and probably on most PCs. I remember that in some car arcade games, the rear view was rendered at half (or even less) speed than the actual front view to save some muscles and used simplified rendering with less or no graphical effects. And putting such thing into ED cockpit will break the immersion - at least for me.

The only problem with the scanner is that I have not found any easy way to target the ship behind (to see its orientation and rotational movement). Searching it in the list of the left contact panel is not an option in the combat.

Meanwhile fighter-jets, lorries, transport ships and aeroplanes don't have them ;)

A toggle option for rear-viewscreen would be kinda sweet though :)

Fighter jets certainly DO have them, to see if somebody is trying to get on their six. :)
The original Elite not only had a rear view (as well as side views), they had weaponry there to worry attackers.

Render it on the screen between our legs so the res is small? How cool would it be if it was rendered in white wireframe like the old elite too? :)

Render on that blank screen at low fps and resolution, and only when the landing pad orientation system is running.

Even Elite 84 had side and rear views!

And I want A FLYBY CAMERA for a more cinematic atmosphere / game experience. They are so restrictive with views. The debug cam in 1.2 is a joke. It's so close to the ship.
A propper camera view and flyby camera would not in any way make dogfights harder or better. I think people using ext. view in a fight would even get a disadvantage.
Good pilots fly with the geometry in their heads. YOu can't beat that with a cam.

The bigger the ships get I think the more need for more advanced sensors and options to show different views. So I agree with OP. I believe the X-Series had those extra monitors where you could see different views from your ship or from your target?

Have you considered developing spatial awareness?

(Also, use your ' sensors)

External views has nothing to do with spatial awareness.
It's about giving the player the ability to see his ship from other perspectives and get enjoyment from that.
I fly FSX (MS Flight Sim) and it's great to be able to watch a flyby or landing from the tower or external view.
It's fun.
This game is meant to be fun?
Oh no wait, it's a laborious grind. Sorry I forgot.

Why cant we see what is behind us?

The idea is that you're a pilot and you see through the eyes of that pilot. Cutting away to a different camera would break this.

Wait for 1.2 - you'll have plenty of looking around to do.

:D

Dubug camera mode is great, but it's not going to be usable during combat because you lose flight controls.

I want a reverse view, but it should be shown via a screen built into the dash. Like the one between the pilot's legs in the Viper. You should be able to 'UI-Focus down' to use it.

Totally agree. It's so much fun to see your plane flying by and making loops etc. It improves the game experience. I have no idea why FD is so restrictive with these things.
Makes 0 sense.

Well, not everyone wants that I'm a Pilot View Only. ANd for those Scaaaaaaaaared that they break the immersion, just the hell don't use external view. Noone forces them. But there are a lot of players (I think the majority) who want a propper external view and more options. And yes, I really do want a flyby camera for cinematic effects.
Imagine the videos you could take with a flyby cam - your ship approaching and then zooooooooooomphtooooooooch! up in hyperspace while the camera moves from right zoom in to left huge planet in the background and then Hyperjump. AWESOOOOOOOOOOOOME! : )

and if the idea is 'The idea is that you're a pilot and you see through the eyes of that pilot.' - then I want to get out of my chair and walk in my ship and get out. It's on the one hand 'Pilot view only' but ......... Never seen a pilot 'Nailed to his chair only'.

Whilst a rear-view camera would be nice, what's more needed - especially on large ships - are proximity graphics when going through the toast-rack and slot. Using much the same ship graphics as when landing on a pad, it'd show your ship in the middle from straight behind, and around the ship the toast-rack and slot with numbers on top, sides and bottom showing distance in meters to each edge as measured from the highest, lowest and widest part(s) of your ship.

The original version of Elite had them and I would like a rear view BUT I can see why we don't get them! If we had them all you would have to do is boost forwards and then switch to rear weapons and start firing at the chasing ship which would be directly in your sights as it attempted to chase you. Pretty much the reason we don't have true newtonian flight, FA requires more skill......

Getting up out of your chair and walking around is coming in a future expansion.

You having an external camera which you can use during flight gives you increased spacial awareness, and therefore a tactical advantage above that which you have sat in the pilot's seat. The devs have been clear about their intentions on this in the past, I can't see them changing their minds on this.

My suggestion of a rear-view camera view through a small screen in the cockpit addresses the OP without introducing a feature that would completely alter the dynamics of combat gameplay.

Just a docking assist HUD would be a massive help there! It could come on with your landing gear.

Good point OP, another option that is not in the game. A ship with reverse thrust.... but no way to look back. I laugh at those who defend the developers. I bet someone will say "use your imagination, and IMAGINE you are looking behind you."
