Even my car has a rear view camera

Wow, are you for real?!
When someone is on your tail! You may wanna see how close they are and which way they are veering before you pull a sick defensive maneuver.

I know how close an enemy is because the targeting area tells me to nearest meter. And when the enemy is behind me, the target hologram already shows me which way the ship is veering, not that it matters because I'm too focused on evading or repositioning my ship behind the enemy ship. Somehow this is enough because I've only lost one engagement against an elite NPC. A rear-view mirror makes sense in a car because a car operates in extremely close quarters and doesn't have shields. No need to fantasize about rear view mirrors and fuzzy dice. You're flying a ship in the vastness of space not driving a car to the drive-in theatre.

I would rather have a big, round sensor display right in front of me. Maybe it could show all the contacts in my instance, and color code them for easier identification.

This, we already have all thats needed to "see" behind us. A rear-view mirror would be too limiting.
Why was this dug up anyway?

We need a stable 3rd person camera. Would make it possible to create more cinematic movies.

That won't happen. I`m happy with cam drone idea and debug cam - debug cam is all I was asking for in "external cam view" thread where almost everybody yelled at me to "go back to your xbox cod kid, stop ruining the game down" lol.
3p view that benefit in combat gameplay is a no no fo me in this game.
In cockpit screens that will show us hull cam views - oh yes pls.

My problem with the radar is scale. I can't tell if a target is 500M or 5KM behind me.
It gets worse in SC when you're trying to figure out how far the planetary bodies are from you, and each other.

SC works on a time-horizon for what is on the scanner, not distance per-se.
But I agree, maybe a very clear but subtle range marker could be added to the rings in the sensor display to convey more precise information.

If you are seeing laser bolts fly past your cockpit they're less than 3,000 meters from you.

If you see bullets, they're 4,000 meters away.

Select the target and it will tell you to the meter what the distance is. :D

a necro oh boy i did enjoy reading through this though :p

Boy that blank screen between our legs sure does seem about the right size for such a thing...

Yeah exactly. Big enough to tell if what's behind you or to help you squeeze a T9 through a docking slot, but small enough that you won't be able to fly combat with it.

these two things right here I highly agree with, we have that tiny screen there that serves no purpose. a rearview camera of some sort wouldbe nice when it comes to docking especially large ships like the T9

obviously for combat you are better off using the radar but for stuff the radar can't make out (like the inside of the station or the letterbox entry) a camera would be nice.

The only point I can see why they haven't bothered is like others said framerate might be an issue on lower end machines which I feel might be mitigated by allowing the ability to turn off said camera. Maybe making it only turn on when you turn to face it kinda like the navigation and status panels.
I'm already having trouble picturing the Xbox run the game little less with yet another screen to render but again the problem should be mitigate-able by allowing us to turn on/off said camera.

Ah the good ol' warm, warmer, hot! game.

Ergo, the radar is pretty much crap for everything other than basic direction.
