Indecisive Lurkers: Why you must get the rift

Hmm, is the OP a salesman? ;)

The DK2 is a development model meant for developers, I am not a developer :(

Alas I am not. I've had a sales job before. I quit after 1 day. Sales is the hell hole of work. But tbh, if it were DK2s I had to sell, I'd probably still be doing it and quite rich too :D

So yeah, it's officially a dev kit. They emphasised that not because it's intended for developers, but because you have to do some home tweaking, and deal with a few issues that they would be embarrassed about if they sold it as consumer (like the bloody HMD camera) So what? Did you read my post?

It's never enough

Whilst a 970 will more than suffice to get you started... Be warned - it is a slippery slope. You crave more fps, high res, better graphics until in my case your 780ti becomes 980s in SLI!

Seriously I downloaded the new NVIdia driver yesterday and it disabled my SLI without me realising. One 980 with DSR X1.5 and all graphics maxed out stuttered like crazy! I thought for a second something had gone horribly wrong! But now I want MORE DSR! Those titan X cards in SLI are looking nice! :p

Until we get some magic VR driver, a new direct x or pascal solves all of our problems we will always crave more!

You have been warned! :)

buy the dk2, find it on your local classified for cheaper than ebay
i bought mine for $400 canadian, thats literally only 200 pound or 300 USD...ebay they sell for 500 USD used...

a gtx 970 is almost perfect, a 980 or sli 970/980 is bliss

my 970 did 75fps out of the box without tweaks. just med-high settings.

then i overclocked to 1350/7500 mhz and could turn up the DSR to 1.2 NO PROBLEM and zero judder in space, 71-74 fps in stations. but who cares about stations...

so that being said...go buy

then dump the dk2 when you feel comfortable near release of the CV. so either the day it gets announced, you may still get decent $$ for dk2. or half what you payed and you put that towards the CV which will only be like 300-400 USD.

its a no brainer, gotta pay to play...

I think I saw, a while back, that the consumer version is going to be much cheaper. More like the £120 mark.

These statements get lost and who knows. I'm hoping it is going to be that price.

I was under the impression that Oculus doesn't support SLI or Crossfire? Nor ED for that matter? Or did you just mean they are bliss in general?

I have a single 980 and run my dk2 on low settings. Smooth as butter even inside stations. I dont even notice the difference between low and high, it is so immersive.

However I do notice that when I enter a really crowded system, I get serious jutter that makes me nauseous. Not sure why this happens. Its not like I am surrounded by other vessels as they are not even in visual range, just my sensor is lit up like a Christmas Tree. Does anyone else experience this?

listen, the original poster is correct and the experience is something that should be had because it is excellent! Although I have to say after 3 months of using the raft I have reached a point where, although the experience is quite immersive, the constant need to toy with the graphics setting my computer CPU and to scour the forums looking for solutions so that my game runs at a hundred percent have exhausted my soul.

Again, this experience is immersive but it has quite exhausted my soul! Even with one of the most powerful rings around and a super clock 980 GTX I still have more issues and some folks with 600 series cards.

I am using voice to text to post this but I wanted to chime in and add my two cents for your evaluation. Good luck and it is still worth experiencing the immersive abilities of the DC 2

It was also 'meant' for VR enthusiasts, so get your facts right. Who do you think the kickstarters were?

Ok, keep your hair on.

I went to the website and read up on it, it said it is for developers.

Another article said it was for developers to use for implementation testing.

What am I supposed to make from that?

upon further research and watching youtube videos you quickly realize its not "for developers"...

its for people who like tech toys...

i had no idea how good VR was, but purchased a dk2 on a whim. Mainly to play assetto corsa...
bought ED from someone dirt cheap again on a whim with no intention of enjoying space combat but lets just say i havent touched assetto corsa since i first started ED with the dk2...

hah! Imagine what it's like with an R9 280 .. I pray to the gods for a magic driver to boost my FPS. I may have to move on to human sacrifice.

It is meant for developers, that obviously doesnt stop people buying it because they are into that kind of thing, but it's clearly stated on the website.

dont forget to overclock your superclocked video card...

these SC or factory boosted cards typically can go way further!

like +300 mhz above hte already factory OC. which makes a WORLD of difference in dk2/ed

@djb I wish that was the case with my Sapphire R9 280 Dual X .. The moment I turn up the dial in Catalyst - the thing throttles back and I actually lose 1/3 performance. Would love to know if there were some way around this.

I was just thinking, yeah right I'll have no luck with the local classifieds..... and have just found a DK2 advertised - 7 miles down the road for £220 ;)

I love playing ED on my Rift, I really like exploring with it, I don't just don't just go as close to the planet that I need to start scanning it. I go right up to planet to have a closer look. Most of the time it just a grey ball with not much detail so I move on quickly to the next one but the occasionally I am treated to a gorgeous view and I will sit there for a few moments sat IN my ship not just looking at a monitor, loving what I am seeing. I have no problems with SDE I can still see how beautiful the stations and the galaxy have been crafted, the distant stars could be abit smaller but that's my only complaint. My Oculus Rift DK2 is well worth the money I have spent.

this is a typical problem where your dealing with TDP, you must increase that limit to make sure the card doesnt throttle.
with nvidia sometimes you have to use the manufacturers software, IE zotac 970/980, you must use the zotac firestorm oc software to unlock the voltage and go higher than a basic OC.

if that makes any sense, but i have ZERO experience with modern day AMD stuff. i bet you sapphire makes its own overclock software which will help that throttling.

Should I send mine back because I'm not a developer then?
