Newcomer / Intro Earning Credits Early Game

So I'm pretty new to playing also. I've just been doing simple delivery missions in my stock Sidewinder but my biggest paydays have been when I've gone to a nav beacon and did some bounty hunting. I have about 120K saved. My plan was to save around 400K and then buy a Viper and kit it out with better weapons. Reason I was thinking this is that I want try some of those combat missions because they have quite high rewards but I know I can't do that until I get a better ship. The Viper looks like a decent fighter. Although reading this post I'm now torn on whether I should upgrade my sidewinder a bit first to get a better FSD. Or do I go the Hauler route. Or do I wait and save more and get Cobra. Argh!? What to do?

The one piece of advice that's nearly always true in this game: don't buy too soon. If you buy a Viper or a Cobra, make sure you have enough for insurance, plus maybe a little for upgrades straight away. And you'll need seeding money if you want to do any trading or any missions that involve purchases. The Viper is pretty much a 100% fighter, the Cobra seems more rounded in its roles.

The Cobra might be a good call if you're not sure what you want to do yet. If you know you want to go bounty hunting, then go for the Viper. Or if you want to make loads of money so you can get a much better craft later, maybe trading is quicker (though perhaps more boring?).

Thanks for the advice....Yeah that's the thing. I kinda want to find some action so that's why I'm thinking of going the Viper route. If the Cobra was cheaper I'd go for that because it looks like a great multi-role ship. But damn I just spec'd out a kick ass Viper on edshipyard and it's gonna cost me 2.3 million credits. holy sh*t! haha I've gotta be patient I guess. Now I wondering if I should spend some cash on a better FSD for my sidewinder and get more cargo space so I can travel further and do more trading missions to make up the money.

Even a basic Viper without upgrades is pretty good, as long as you're not taking on Anacondas, Dropships etc. you can still make a lot. But once you upgrade it a bit, you can make 400K - 500K easily enough in one bounty hunting trip to a RES, so you could probably pay for that ship in one sitting. Of course, the problem is you need to pay for it up front! :)

Maybe ED needs in-game banks. Or credit cards. Or loan sharks?

I've made all my credits while exploring in a Sidewinder. It can be done. Since launch I've been to over 6,000 systems.

That must have taken a loooooooong time and i hope you made a LOT of credits, cause alot of the time in this game the effort tends to never equal the reward.

I struggle to trade, the only trade worth doing is rare commodities and that takes a while to do in a sidewinder, but i wanted to do combat, but sadly, the combat in this game is too difficult....its the whole turning in combat that screws me over in this game, this is why i tend to dislike the newtonian physics, realism isn't always a good thing, an authentic experience of trading exploring in this game is excellent, the bounty hunting is too, if you can get past the whole controls in combat thing, which i couldn't.

I have no idea how many credits I have potentially made. I haven't been to a station since Jan 7. I'm over 57,000ly from the nearest station. By the time I return to colonized space, I expect to have close to 9,000 systems worth of data to turn in. I expect to make it back sometime in June or July... if I survive. Here's a video of my progress:

My hero!:)

I am doing my best to emulate you. So far I have only made it 7,200 Ly out in my Sidewinder before having to run for home, after my girl was ambushed and given a sound beating by a gang of Stars. You know how it is, they hang about on the corner of a constellation just waiting for some poor passer-by who to come past.

But seriously, this is actually a great challenge, and not only that, a great way to help develop self discipline and concentration. Because the first time you let either slip, the above happens.

One question r4nger0. How is your Sidewinder holding up after all of this time?

Thank you for the kind words. Never give a redneck a spaceship. You never know what the hell he's gonna do with it. :p

As far as my ship goes, my hull is at 82% and my modules seem to be holding up. So far so good.

r4nger0 in the Newcomer's Forum! (I don't get out of here much.) Great & inspirational work out there, Sir. Thank you very much & may your ride remain smooth.

Showing everyone what even the Sidewinder can do with enough willpower is, I think, one of the most valuable and helpful lessons about this game.
