would the gameplay mechanics for Elite be a good base for a PvP game ... probably .. would Elite Dangerous be a solid PvP game ... No .. this game will evolve into a co-op game with much less focus on PvP, why? because everyone who is looking for a competitive game will move on to the next game .. it's the way things are .. who is gonna stick around to see if FD suddenly change their entire game plan to fit the vocal minority? ..

Sounds like EXACTLY what Braben intended all along. Coop PvE with occasional PvP. Funny that hey. It hasn't 'evolved' that way though in my opinion - it is as designed all along. Sounds to me like the development is right on track then.

to be blunt there is no other game on the horizon for the PVPers. at least not in the spaceship vein. star citizen is vaporware at the moment, and most are not convinced it's pvp mechanics will be very good (i hope to be pleasently surprised) and most of the stick and rudder junkies don't want to play the eve online boat simulator, they want to fly a space fighter.

we're here to stay unless Fdev really shuts us down, which it seems they won't given the recently announced changes to bounties are aiming to encourage pvp and the bounty hunter/pirate/criminal trinity.

right, you want it to be a slaughter house only when the mood strikes you -- and guess what, you can do that in private groups with like minded people, amazing!

Gotta say I love that they have all three. When I just want to go about my daily life alone I can. When I want to group with friends I can. When I want to socialize I can. Almost no real downsides to it. Some people think that it means there will be less players because many will choose solo/group play. If they were removed most of them would just leave the game. Though I do admit I play in solo/group most of the time. I prefer the "tank" role and thanks to chaffs being OP they more or less hard counter big/non mobile ships. You would think that if they were so powerful and useful someone would have invented a counter to it. Imho I think chaff should not work if the target ship is within 1.5km. That way it would take some more skill (on both sides) rather then just pressing a button every 8 sec. and being all but invulnerable. Or you know hire NPCs to visually aim turrets or counter chaff, but that's a whole other thing.

You are entitled to you opinion, but Open (multi-player) has held back the development of this game considerably, I personally couldn't give a fig for multi player. As to single player games not lasting .. you are playing a game that was always single player and has been around for 30 years, it was so good they made it multi-player .. I have no idea if any multi player game has that longevity.

Edit* oh wait, I do ... they don't ..

That's a video game franchise. Big difference. Original Elite is as dead as a doornail. As are all iterations before this latest one, including Oolite.

This game, to reach it's full potential, will require years of active development. Don't know about you, but I'd really like to get those planetary landings and walking in ships and stations, as well as the 90% of DDF stuff that was talked about but never implemented. All that takes time - lots and lots of time.

And active development of this ONE game, requires an active audience. An audience that will keep playing this game for years and years, AND buying stuff from the cash shop (are pay paintjobs as interesting to people who have no one but themselves to look at them) AND buying the expansions.

We're not talking about Elite 2: More Dangerous or Elite 3: Even More Dangerous, we're talking about this game.

And only multiplayer games (specifically MMOs) have lasted anywhere near ten years and still retained anything that can be called an audience.

to be blunt too, this isn't my problem... and surely no argument to turn this game into a slaughterhouse.

Stick to solo, you'll be safe there little wabbit. ;)

there are numerous counters to chaff

counter 1 - missiles
counter 2 - fixed weapons
counter 3 - turretted weapons (unaffected by chaff)
counter 3 (for gimballed weapons) - unlock the target and use it like a fixed weapon until his chaff runs out, then relock him with the 'lock target ahead' button.

1.) I like prolonged fights. Missiles run out of ammo pretty fast meing I need to go back to the station over and over again.
2.) Thought this was pretty clear but fixed weapons is almost useless if you are a large and/or slow ship if fighting an agile/small ship. That an if the hard point placemat is bad...
3.) Chaff seems to affect them a bit at range, but even if that is just me being wrong all but beam ones can't seem to hit anything. To top it off the do paltry damage vs. their gambled and fixed counterparts. So an agile or small target will still chew up my powerplant.
4.) See number two, but add in the lack of the soft auto lock making hard point placement and accuracy even more important.

Ever heard of a game called Civilisation?

Which one? I, II, III, IV, Revolution, V?

Game franchise. Civ I is for all intents and purposes, dead. Even though reads such as this (guy played the same game of Civ II for ten years) are interesting, a few loyal fans do not make a viable audience warranting continued development.

ED is ENORMOUS in scope. I don't think many realize how enormous. This is no single player game. This behemoth dwarfs, in concept, virtually every game to date. You realize the time and resources needed for a project of such magnitude? Single player games do not live long enough, nor generate enough income to support that (and it's kinda worrying that FD are slacking off with the cash shop).

and still some ppl still play ffe ....

Oh, i will.
Until i decide to play open... i love options ;)

As do I! I adore options! I think PvErs should have plenty of content to entertain themselves, and PvPers the same. And I think the game should be balanced and fair so that nobody feels that they are being forced to play in a way they don't like.

And yet, here we are, still arguing.

Sure they do. But those twenty people won't be financing anything with their purchases, will they.

fair points, all valid from a pve perspective. the problem with pve is it often turns into turn and burn fights where big ships are at a disadvantage.. when you are fighting other players there are opportunities to force the bad guy to burn into a straightaway, or to get friends involves in a turn and burn so you can move off for a better firing solution. turrets also have their place. most of our big ship pilots use a combination of fixed, gimballed and turrets in fire groups for different situations.. anyways, it's off topic for this thread. i just wanted to ensure you were aware of how to counter chaffs in general.

Always hearing about players going SOLO to earn easy credits and then going back to OPEN with a kitted Ana. How would you feel if it was like SC they just released two new ships to celebrate their major update. They only cost $275-Retaliator/ $90-Gladius. That's real cash I'm talking about.

You are preaching, not debating.

The game IS balanced and fair, since everyone has the same options.
You want the benefits of open game and limit my game just because you don't accept the drawbacks of your choice.
