Anyone else searching for the NVIDIA Geforce GTX Titan Black?

It shows nothing but complete disregard of all the back history and fan fiction written for this game in the name of immersion. How can we take Galnet seriously now? I don't think I'd expect to ever walk into Stormwind and see an advert for Burger King. Any respectable gaming company would never mock their own IP and degrade their game in such a way.

Its a complete and total sell out. I'd rather pay £20 a month subscription than endure this tripe.

The whole history of the original Elite games has always been about the immersion.

Why do you feel mocked?
It's not an advertising banner flashing in stations, if that would be the case than I'd agree with you.
This is just a giveaway instead.

Did I say I felt mocked? I said Frontier were mocking their own IP.

I don't want to arrive in a star system and dock with a station called Nvidia HQ.

What about flavour text for the system that says "This system is where Nvidia set up its new Manufaturing facilities"

It's really that bad for you?

Its more about this decision setting a precedent for the future of the game. Its about how bad it will get if this is just the start. The entire world of Elite Dangerous will be ruined by real world marketing being shoved down our throats via a game that is designed from the ground up to be an immersive, story driven space opera.

I find the decision beyond crazy. If the game requires this kind of external funding revenue to stay alive then give us a premium server that is advertising free - I'd happily pay for it!

Its becoming clearer now why Offline was dropped.

I disagree with those fears about the future of ED. Maybe because I played a MMO before that was so horrible managed that Frontiers decisions are awesome.
Trust me when I say that this thing that bothers you so much I'd actually not that bad.
Like I said before, when they put flashy banners in than I'll agree

Hmm. Apologies to anyone who's already said something similar to the following; I normally try to read everything before posting but it's late and this thread is growing like mould on a week-old hotdog.

My problem with this give-away isn't the way it's been integrated into the lore, which is actually quite slick given the current limitations of the in-game news system, but that it's yet another "competition" in which those players with stacks of free time are at a distinct advantage over those without. It's not a puzzle to be slowly solved, nor a dated random draw where every pre-sifted "correct answer" has an equal chance of winning. It looks to be more of an Easter egg hunt in which those who can spend the most time in the garden are more likely to stumble upon an instant-winning egg.

With the Race To Elite competition this was forgiveable, as there was really no other way to play it and it was a neat redux of the original Elite competition back in the mid '80s. But if the nature of this nVidia competition sets a precedent for any similar future promotions it's quite possible it'll lead to a significant backlash from those who can only afford to dedicate a couple of hours per week -- rather than several hours per day -- to the universe of ED.

my 15yr old daughter has been reading some of these comments over my shoulder, she says its funny how sometimes small things can cause such a big fuss, while at other times big things might cause no fuss at all, then she giggled and said she is very suprised how many girls are into playing my space game. its ok, i did correct her, its all about perception.. and she is now aware that it is more of a space sim than a space game.

I suspect that it is actually more because of women actually trusting this community enough to not hide their gender. Getting good statistics on this is hard, of course, and I probably don't have the best sources either, but AFAIK, according to the studies that have been made, a large portion of the female playerbase in most online games either don't interact with the community outside the game, or they hide their gender on the forum.

The frontier forums seems to be different, and I'm pretty sure this is a good sign when it comes to the health of the community. For all the flamey discussions and all the ''fuss'', I actually think that almost everyone is pretty reasonable compared to a lot of communities out there. Kudos! (but this is completely off-topic. Sorry.)

i think there is always room in any discussion to praise the community, especially the sort of community where members may disagree with someones opinion 1 day and happily be giving them rep for something the next... thats a really rare thing, and definately something to laud.

Slightly different angle on this...eligibility.

Nvidia is an US based company, running a sweepstakes/raffle.

Will non US citizens be eligible ?

I've ran into this problem many years ago in Tiger Woods '99, where Buick sponsored prices for an online tournament, and european players weren't eligible due to US legislation.

I also have a current example, where Newegg is running a promo on the newly relaunched Massivelyop website (MMO gaming site). Again, eligible are US citizens and Citizens of Canada (with the exception of Quebec).

The eligibility bit is at the bottom of the article.

I'm curious what the rules of this contest are going to be.

This got sidetracked quickly...

Thats cause female gamers were brought up. :p

Jokes aside.. The gripers have griped so I'm not sure much more can be said about it :p gotta wait till tomorrow for this whole shabang to even begin.

I'm sure Michael will have an official post with a link to the rules and stuff tomorrow.

I think it's a great idea and it's been done in a really fun way. Even if you don't find one of the containers, think how much exploration data you'll gather on the trip. There are so many negative people in this community, it just baffles me completely. Yeah, opinions and all that, but ye gods, will FD ever do anything that somebody doesn't feel the immediate need to crap all over from a great height I wonder?
