Polite CODE pirate... Plus Asp vs large ship advice?

So I encountered a pirate from CODE tonight... Told me to stand down or he'd open fire.

I was afraid he'd shoot me anyway so I ran. I'm in an A rigged Asp and he was in a Clipper.

Problem 1. He's faster.
Problem 2. He mass locks (well, slows it down greatly)

Sooo... running wasn't the best idea. He stripped my shields and beat the crap out of me, all before my drive could charge.

Fortunately he didn't destroy me, just my engines.

Now, before they introduced reboot/repair that was a death sentence. Now its an opportunity to reconsider ones previous decision of non compliance, so I drop my cargo.

Pirate does not finish me off and I have time to reboot and limp back home.

Surprisingly it only cost 12k to repair... And given my insurance would have been 1.3 million, that's a good deal. So thanks to the pirate that truly did only want my loot. If I ever decide to take on CODE pirates, I'll return the favor ;)

However, it got me thinking, what if I was in that scenario and the guy was just out for blood? I couldn't have run away, so how could I have stood a chance? Tactics are different for NPCs than CMDRs, so what would work best? Boost and flip with FA off? Shoot backwards? Get in close and try to stay on his tail? (could an Asp even maneuver like that?

Funny how fighting NPCs is in no way practice for the real thing ;)

Well, tbh, if a clipper commander wants you to die in your ASP, you will probably die.

What you could try though:

Don't boost away in a straight line... stay close as if you were dogfighting him, while your FSD is charging. He is faster anyway, so running won't help. Also deploy chaff while you are doing this. If he uses gimballed weapons, which a clipper pilot probably does, it will be difficult to hit you, let alone take out a particular subsystem. This might give you enough time to jump out alive.

Good to hear, that there is still honor among thieves. The new game tweaks really makes piracy less painful. However repairs are FAR too cheap in my opinion. It just makes no sense to repair a completely crippled 200M Conda for a few thousand bucks. A ship at 2% hull, costing half its value as repair fee would still be a fair deal.

We are pretty lucky, that the combat AI has built in flaws and is not optimized for perfection. No human player would stand a chance otherwise.

Personally, if I was in a A-rated ASP, I would of stood my ground.

But to each their own :)

I'm inexperienced in PVP and assumed someone like that knows what they are doing. Also the comment above yours suggests I wouldn't have stood a good chance regardless

also, what's a better damage output setup? 2 Class2 beams and 4 Class1 multicanons, or 2 Class2 multicanons and 4 Class1 beams?

I'm inclined to agree. It should be always be cheaper than rebuy (to discourage suicide), but not THAT insanely cheap.

One other thing I forgot... I was carrying rares, so I really should have dropped them given how little they actually cost me ;). It's not like I was carrying Palladium I paid for myself

ifa (similar rated ASP)

I'm more to incline to fight and die instead of run. Nobody is taking my liquor cargo! No one!!!!!!

Yeah, but I play a variation of IronMan (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=107694) which means getting shot down always carries the risk of starting over from scratch. Not worth it if you know it's a suicide mission.

Hell, just running away my heart was pounding in my chest. I knew I was doomed and afraid I was going to roll low afterwards. It was intense. Then, when I the engines were killed and I realized he wasn't shooting, I felt a huge wave of relief.

You just don't get those intense feelings if you know you'll walk away from a fight every time. ;)

Quickly scan his ship: are his central weapons lethal, like plasma or rails? If not, fly into his face between his main large weapons on his nacelles and unload all six of your guns at him, making sure to not to run away. Keep close and target the reactor. If you run, your reactor will soak up hits if your shield goes and thats game over in an Asp as it is so fragile.

Considering that pirates rarely asks for much due to limited cargo space, simply complying without resistance may be the way to go.

If you fight, you risk your entire cargo & repair or insurance. If you drop some cargo, you merely lower the profit margin.

Its that time of year again. Introducing the Summer Sales Event at your local Faulcon DeLacy dealer and buy a new 3300 Cobra MKIII. The only thing a pirate will see, is your vapor trails.

Tax, title and insurance extra. Take possession of dealer stock by January 1st 3301.

Good rules to live by! :) I'm more suicidal. :)

I was thinking of always carrying 40T of explosives, so, if I die, it would be a good explosion. :)

Oh, I don't mind surrendering if I know they're an honorable pirate. :) I've done it before. But I didn't know for sure where this guy stood and risked running. And once he started shooting I thought I was pretty much committed to the chase.

At least I know now that running from a Clipper or bigger directly simply isn't an option ;)

If you're in a mass-lock situation and lower speed... you can do two things (or a combination of it) :

- charge for a Hyperjump instead of SC FSD
- keep close to and circle your opponent all the time (the annoying Fly) while your FSD charges

Interesting... does Hyperjump to another system charges differently than in-system supercruise? Or is that so they don't just up and interdict me again once I'm out?

You'll see this heavily irritates most opponents - and usually you'll only be under fire for very brief periods of time.
Against a Clipper, letting it snow right in front of his face (Chaff) will also help quite a bit.

The stupid thing is I HAD chaff... but I never end up using it. There's rarely a need against NPCs, so I haven't got that reflex down yet.

Since mass-lock is the same 150m from the Target as it is at 2.9km... All you do is the the only thing to keep you out of the heart of the envelope of the Clipper's Weapons.

Eventually, the Clipper will likely give it a single afterburn to get some distance from the annoying fly that's near-impossible to hit in any reasonable way.
When that happens - make it 180 out and do the same. You'll quickly break beyond 3km range and will get your SC entry if you wanted that variant.

Now that is some Han Solo worthy flight advice! Cheers!

PS.
IMHO polite and nice Pirates that worked hard to win an Interdiction kinda deserve some Cargo for their work ;)
Anything is better than someone who just want to blow stuff up.

True. I wish I could alter my "eject all" button to "eject 5 tons" button (random or whatever is at the top of the list) and use that as a pirate charity button ;) . I don't want to distract myself in an intense situation by having to search menus for what to drop. But I like the idea of outwitting a pirate (in the way you described) and leaving something for their trouble as I get away).
