I think it's way to early to have a real opinion about the future of this game. The guy promises the earth and tells people what they want to hear. You can definitely see that a lot of money has gone into assets. Graphics are fantastic for dog and pony shows and generating interest in what your marketing.

My biggest concern from the trial I had a while back was the small enclosed spaces and lousy flight model with joystick. But it's probably 2 years away from release and a lot can happen in that time.

I'm just not going to spend any money now, wait and see. I like the human scale detail of all the graphics even if many of the ship designs are a bit fanciful and not that convincing. They still look better than most recent games.

I have a feeling it's going to be a bit too typical MMO in 1st and 3rd person with more arcade feeling flight models. It certainly looks pretty though, so long as you ignore the overly fussy and too busy HUD design.

I know all I do is moan about VR support :p but it seems that crytek will not have the VR implementation ready in time for 3.7
As CR stated this would be the last version of Cryengine they implement, [...]
He did? That was news to me. Do you have a link?
I doubt that is written in stone.

[...] what do you think this means for VR and Star Citizen?
I cannot believe that with VR about to take off, they will ommit it entirely.
Well, a staff member at Crytek say "we will be pushing the VR updates to the main branch once we're happy with the implementation." and so it's just for CIG to implement it when it's done.

Yeah CIG probably just set the cutoff at 3.7, because they thought that was the version which would implement VR (and other important stuff), but if VR won't come until a later version, then they will probably just move the cutoff to said later version.

So the vanguard is another air-plane in space. Look at all those pointless wing flaps, its not like players are ever going to fly them in atmosphere, and even if you did it would just drop like a rock in real physics. I really wish CIG would create some space ships.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds the ship design bad but it's quite a personal thing though. It does feel to me that it's just flying bling in space that looks "cool"; rather than starting from the point of, if you were going to be flying about in space like this, how would you design the ships to maximise the crews chance for survival.

I think a lot of it is to do with CR's vision of creating uber-fidelity graphics, the the fancy ships are a way of showing this off.
Personally, I don't care - will the game be fun?

Difficult question to answer! I don't think that will start to become clear until they expanded the game passed arena combat (which I'm not interested in). Is there any idea how they'll expand future releases, I've seen the images of the mining station (I think it was that) so will they follow a similar route as Elite and add that in so you can dock and change ship configuration and then go back to the combat area? Or have the FPS part on the mining station?

I dunno, I think we are a long way off yet. Until the persistent universe is with us, we can only go on bits of unfinished modules. For arena commander, my opinion is that it started badly, but has made some improvement - but more improvment is needed IMO.
FPS? I guess we'll find out (at least a taster) in however many weeks it takes for it to be launched.
Planetside/Social, again, we'll get a taster in due course.
For measuring overall fun, I think the first proper indicator will be the first installment of SQ42 towards the end of this year - that should help give us a better idea on how the PU may pan out (as it will be many modules working together - although scripted and on rails to a certain extent)....

Ohhh, you cagey little storm trooper. Come on, speculate wildly!

Any idea if there'll be FPS elements in that SQ42 instalment? I'm intrigued by the transitions that will take place from flying into FPS which could be equally amazing or game breakingly terrible and everything inbetween.

OK, for SQ42, I can tell you what I kind of expect, and/or would like to see.
Intro mission/mission 1. Long-ish cinematic, perhaps some sequence of ships in a previous firefight or something to set the start of the story, next scene starts with a long sweeping shot of the carrier ship, showing high level detail of people waling around inside, working etc, ending up zooming into a briefing room where your commanding officer is telling you all about your first mission.
Once done, game switches into FPS mode and you have to get to your ship, perhaps picking up equipment along the way. You find your way to the hangar, find your ship and get in, launch - and away we go!

Later missions may see you switch to 'space marine' mode, where (hopefully) you have to fly somewhere, land, get out of your ship and sweep some installation/derelict in FPS mode, with fire fights and all the rest of it.

Integration of planetside, may see you on a mission to find some shady spy spook type in a bar to get the location of "the stolen plans" or whatever plot device is part of the story, this may also include some chasing about, and maybe also shooting...

That's kind of the 'vision' I see of it at the moment - all pure speculation and imagination on my part, but somewhat based in what we have seen as WIP so far.

I'll be leaping on that game like a nympho on a sexy virgin.

But, too much doubt for me at the moment.

I've learned that landing is best done uncoupled, strafing and acceleration is way too fast to land now. Ill try and find a video explaining just that.

Edit haven't found the video so ill try to record one showing what I meant, I did found a couple of small clips from WD (Western Digital) talking about Star Citizen, seems they are partners in some way now.

Edit I think it's because is trying to land a formula one ship lol, everyone here would likely crash also when parking a formula one car, it requires a bit more of practice and finesse to deal with that sexy beast!

Ship movement is really strange, like they are made of paper. They accelerate way too fast!

If your talking about 1:00 - 1:10 in the video. It just looks like a simple controller you can drop on a mesh to control it in 6 axis in Unity3D. A linear direction with slight delay to dampen the movement when you let go combined with simple collision geometry and maybe not enough friction between surfaces during touchdown.
