Game seems to be coming along nicely..BUT

There are few things I've paid for in advance for myself alone other than E D. Why did I do it? Lot's of reasons I guess but essentially it boils down to a love affair with a game that seems to have been there from my earliest days messing about on computers and throughout my life frankly. I have lots of faith that this version of the game will be the best yet by a country mile and it will give me and my son lots of shared pleasure in the years ahead.

I think in life you pay for what you get and I've no regrets backing E D. Cheers

Star Citizen used to have a really good community, but certain members were allowed to run amok, and their example became the norm because they technically skirted around the forum rules, never breaking them but doing a fine job testing them. The few moderators to take action against them got their asses handed right back (pitifully) and the mods are practically terrified of confrontation to their decisions.

Since then, the community has taken an unfortunately vitriolic standpoint, and mods generally dont do anything about it. If you were to ask me, I think they need some heavy, over the top even moderation, where people started getting 1-2 day bans just for posting something that stupid or noncontributing.

Sure, it would cause some damage at first, but after a while the people who cant make a point with out being a troll or an ******* would either be perma banned or move on. Thats what the SC forums need at this point. Good and innocent people generally dont even go there any more because they'll get torn apart.

On the flip side, ED forums are pretty much spectacular. Not sure if its just the community (i think a poll represented that over 90% was >30 ?) or some fancy footwork to keep people who would spread discontent in check, but its refreshing.
Ooooh, now I want to go there.

I think there are two reasons for that: numbers and niche. If a forum gets too large, without heavy moderation and strict anti-troll policies, it always gets out of hand, and the more mainstream the audience it attracts, the higher the chance of trolls appearing in the first place. It's no surprise that the two most civilized internet forums I know of are these here and the official Kerbal Space Program forums.:D

It's become a bit toxic over there for sure, particularly just in the last month or so. Even the subscriber's forum, which used to be a calm oasis, is getting twitchy. I think there is a state of nervous hysteria building up as a lot of kids are getting very impatient for the dogfighting module. Hopefully once they have something specific to whine about they'll stop the shotgun complaints, but I wouldn't bet on it.

There were a few things that put me off SC but then again I am old school Elite and thats where this entire genre comes from. Its not just promo - the community here is probably one the best in all my online experiences. In some ways I think its improved me a little too

I'm also an old school Elite player and my memories of this have stayed with me, I've honestly had no interest at all in SC, as I know ED will give me all I ever need in a space sim, I can say this because of playing the original Elite, I have also Paid to support ED by going to Alpha and with such a good community here you can't go wrong.

The star citizen forum just makes me want to play it single player.

I have no problem getting blown to smithereens by the people on here though.

Am going to play Star citizen but the way they are going i don't like it one bit, now that Wingman's are confirmed you will be handicapped if you play with one character so you are forced to spend more money on character slots.
I know they said you can hire them in game but trust me the character's you create with money will be better.
They said LTI won't make a difference from the normal insurance, well it will since you have to pay a hell more if you want to go in to more dangerous space and LTI basicly cover all areas.

I would not worry too much about missing the alpha phase. Alpha testing an unfinished game tends to be, in some ways, more like work than fun, and can even somewhat spoil the experience of playing the final game when it comes out.

If you're not genuinely interested in helping Frontier develop their game and just want to play the final game, by all means, just buy the final game.

well yeh, i think we wrote mechwarior to death :D

if he dont want to spent the full sum as its pledged, or nothing, its on him, but complaining they should lower their pledges only he doesnt want to pay so much is a bit offensive to me as i pledged 320 bucks, and i dont have really much money! but i think for such a game its worth it, cause.

1. you neednt pay a monthly fee.

2. this engine is on top everything that comes out next years.

pity that i found it so late, i had spend much more for it then maybe for my own station?

I'm just trying to make sense of the price-point. Which I've yet to see unfortunately. I suppose captain-N had it right, if i'm not into it enough to dump the 200-300 its probably best I leave it alone.

still... its was interesting to see how the game is coming along and the community.

I think you misunderstand
they are not selling "early access" like many other games typically do

pay the higher fees if you want to actually support the game that way, not because you think you are buying something.
the alpha will be very raw, just testing small parts of the game and expected to be buggy.
beta will be better but a test of the entire game with more testers
gamma will be more like what you might expect from "early access" from other games.
then and only then when its good and damn ready will there be a public launch:D

It's a bit like taking a girl out on a first dinner date. Sure, you can take her to Mcdonalds if you are broke, or take her out to The Witchery. Consider one alpha, the other beta.

You have no idea what your expenditure will result in, there are no guarantees you will enjoy the experience, but either way it's got to be better than no date at all :)

I'm not afraid, it's just full of circular arguments, shouty kids and "my ship is better than your ship"...
I just haven't seen much that is interesting on there.

The Hardware section on the SC forums is top notch - full of insightful and helpful people. The best place on the entire forum imho. A while back I asked about building a rig to play Elite Dangerous given the alpha specs and got some good helpful feedback on the type of system to build.

So its not all bad (just avoid general discussion and mentioning ED!) :)

Truth be told .. yes the pledges were high for Alpha/Beta 1&2 but that is the way that FD wanted it .. I do not think that FD wanted 10.000+ Alpha testers..
As to saying people will be kicking themselves for not pledging at £80 for the updates being free ... We don't know, there may never be any updates ... it is entirely possible that planetary landings and walking around may never happen ...

Lets just let the game come out and see what it's like before we plan for the future ..

Nooooooooooo!
Planetary landings were the standout feature of FE2 for me. The thing that set it apart, and the absence of which prevented me from getting into any space game since.

Walking around, though.... not so much

Welcome aboard all new backers. :D

The way I looked at the alpha access was actually as as stepping stone into DDF (which could be seen as stepping stone to the "asset naming" levels) during the KS. So, for a newcomer, it is a bit, lets call it, suboptimal in terms of pricing structure.

CR followed a much more classic marketing approach of selling piecemeal assets, that actually reminded me a bit of Steam. And he was extremely competent at doing so.

My experience with the SC forums is quite limited - actually until recently even in ED forums I had posted in the DDF (now people must be getting fed up with me  on the General forum). But I cannot say they were unpleasant, although I did post in the cold days when the ED KS was going uncertain and not all people were warm to the subject. But it was a civil disagreement.
Later I kinda gave up on SC forums when I saw a thread titled something like "SC is a Space Game" and the opening post extremely inane. Maybe my sense of humor was a bit off that day.

While the SC forums may have gone from not so good to worse, it doesn't need to translate into the game experience - and it certainly won't impact upon the single player game :p. While Elite is special to me, I have great expectations for SC.

Seems like a good idea to only make alpha available to those very committed customers. I was a big Wing Commander fan and actually never played the old Elite games. I recently sold all of my ships for SC and moved here. After seeing ED's gameplay, features and especially this community, I feel much more comfortable here. I'm in my 40's so I like the laid back and respectful atmosphere here. I know many here also backed SC so I don't want to go into why I left except to say that money has become too much a focus for my tastes.

ED looks awesome, the community seems great and I hope to be a productive member and friend to everyone here. :)
