When is Alpha releasing?

I have to admit, I've only heard about ED on the SC reddit and once I saw that battleship video I was hooked! Coming from a UI/design background. Elite appears more coherently designed as if the entire development team is in sync.

Anyways, when is alpha coming? Getting excited since I just pledged over $300 for a game I barely know!

thank you guys for the info although I dont get to have the beta tester I am still glad I backed this game :) I will just leave it up to you guys to test it out and make this game awesome

It's unknown. The only date we have is "december 2013". That was from the Kickstarter last year.

Frontier HAVE said they are still on track. But then came the news that the release in April 2014 is actually a "gamma" or extended BETA available to people who back the game prior to the 6th december 2013 . So, you COULD read that as saying the game is delayed. This is not the general perception, nor is it mine. Most people are also of the opinion that "release it when it's ready" is better than "release it on the set date regardless of bugs".

Anyone who says the Alpha is "soon" or "the 6th" or gives any other date is guessing.

I am not sure that Frontier know, as yet when it will be released.

So ... sometime in the next three weeks is as good as we know.

Many people are guessing that it will be on the 9th, but that is pure conjecture based on the fact that the 9th is when the new site will come online.

FWIW my best guess is that sometime between now and Christmas everyone who has alpha test access will receive an email informing us that the download is available, and directing us to a new forum area for alpha testing where the feedback requirements etc will be detailed.

I don't think the game is delayed at all, but it stands to reason that FD want to release a good product - particularly with the recent X:Rebirth debacle still ringing in everyone's ears. I think all phases of the testing period could be extended beyond the original projections and the game may not go public until well into Q2 2014. Again, that's pure conjecture on my part.

I think alpha at this point will just happen - Michael will drop announcement on us, and it will be accessible right away. No need for special announcements for when it would happen, as situation is probably very fluid.

Awesome news. I think I can hold out 20 days or less. Hope it's the 9th, that would be a great surprise.

Alpha "at the end of this year" - David Braben.

So like many of you I suspected that the alpha will launch on the 9th of December, because when the online store re-opens, alpha access is the only thing that wasn't listed as a "pre order" (according to the latest newsletter). Well now there is some new info! (I think).

Check here at 2:14, an interview with David Braben which, correct me if I'm wrong, is the latest news.

So it looks like we have a little hint when alpha access will release, probably in the 4th quarter of December. :D

December IS the end of the year :) Also he probably meant that whole alpha process will happen at the end of the year. Not start of the alpha :p

Do you think they will allow us to talk about our alpha experiences in public? Maybe they'll want to keep the publicity for a focussed campaign.
