Do you guys remember the Sidewinder vs Sidewinder training mission?

No, i don't remember such mission. I only remember how i got stuck at the "wave after wave after wave" mission and never finished it.

Heh, that "training" mission is for training patience more than anything; you can't use your multi-cannon until the last waves as you simply run out otherwise, which results in slow kills with the lasers for the first half-a-dozen waves. The last wave itself is pretty much only possible by keeping at several kilometers away pinging the Anaconda with the lasers again (which takes forever).

that mission scared me so much, i avoided combat for the next couple of months ingame :D

after i got utterly bored from trading, i bought a viper and tried a RES and to my surprise things were much more feasible.

i think they'd need some sort of starting mission where the opponent's skill trully reflect the skill you face from 70% of NPCs in the proper game.

I loved that mission- it was a great workout for all those neglected controls that I normally overlooked, when I wanted to get the basics of combat back. Working the pips, toggling FA, and emphasising the benefit of headlook, it got me in much better shape for something other than just trading and running.

I absolutely don't think it should be easier. It kicked my ass at first, and forced me to actually execute the basics properly. A "prizes for all" mentality would have taught me nothing. I really like the tutorials in ED.

I think the problem with that tutorial is not because of gimbal vs fix weapon, but the fact that the tutorial doesn't have a warning of "GET A DECENT FLIGHTSTICK BEFORE YOU TRY COMBAT!!" lol

Combat with mouse and fixed weapon mount is an absolute mess.

Fightstick or HOTAS setups makes the game 10 times easier.

True for you, perhaps. Mouse is fine if you invest time to tweak it.

..but didn't it feel good? I bet it made you a leaner, meaner pew-pew..err.. machiner too.

LOL You would think so, wouldn't you.
It was either a lucky shot or the Glasgow kiss I gave him before I died. But I died last and won.

As for making me a leaner, meaner pew-pew..err. I don't carry weapons any more. I have two class A running shoes in my Asp Explorer, instead. ;)

Hah, you should lobby FD for a "just do it" paint job ;)

Flying with mouse/keyboard probably takes more practice and is less instinctive, but mouse is certainly more accurate - if you watch anybody using a joystick on youtube for example when doing fine detail aiming their aimer always wobbles in integer values, this is because micro adjustments are very difficult to make with a joystick mice however excel at this.

its a practiced skill vs an instinctive one really, best aim will always come from a mouse, I suspect best flight comes from a joystick

@Morbad, just tried the incursion mission for the first time but lost to the 3x sidewinders, I watched your video of the last 5 waves to see if you did anything differently but it just looks like they are messing around while you kill the first one, taking big sweeping paths like they were jousting vs somebody who isn't jousting, any suggestions or is it just slightly random as to if you get a particularly nasty combat pattern? This seems like the real last wave to me as I can't really see how you can lose to the conda, the sidewinder they give you regens its shields in about 10s vs anything slow you just have to take ages :/

I used to THINK I did well with mouse too, until I start using my HOTAS for it and realise by how many leagues and miles the different is.

"Doing quite well" and "skills" is a very subjective and relative term. The difference however between Joystick and mouse in Elite: Dangerous is quite distinct and quantifiable however and is not really a "matter of perspective".
I use a custom built flight stick now, but I used the mouse for a while until I had completed the stick. I still play sometimes with a mouse and KB if I am away from home, I do as well either way, I guess it's a matter of getting used to it either way.

Better yet lobby for them to put in player designing of paint jobs like forza has.

I don't find this to be the case. I don't have any kind of deadzone on my rotational axis controls and I have a sensitivity slope that allows for pretty fine adjustments. The only wobble or judder I normally see is due to the rotational rate of the ship itself changing as my velocity changes (and thus moves further from or closer to the optimal blue zone). By and large, it's just as smooth and accurate as my mouse...just ever so slightly slower to do rapid reversals of input direction, as the stick is heavier, sprung, and not bolted to my table, so if I jerk it around too hard it will move, though I am a rather high sensitivity/DPI mouse user (4-5cm 360 in most first person shooters).

Here is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_VQkRQzPaU

Other than some momentary lurching of my crosshair as I adjust to a new pitch rate after a velocity change things look relatively smooth to me.

I'll run it again and see if there have been any recent changes. What wave is that specifically? Five or six?
