Elite boring?

You're like the kid with lots of toys who complains to mommy, "I'm bored. There's nothing to do." So just set down the toy that you don't like and say goodbye already.

It's more like a kid only having one of these and people like you keep telling him he has so many different beads and paths to move them on. How could he possibly get bored?!

If you are not enjoying a recreational activity, and tens of thousands around you are having a blast with the same activity, the issue is not the activity. If I don't like Tennis, I'm not going to spend money to play it. Even if I do, then realize "wait, I don't even LIKE tennis." My response is not to find the nearest tennis gathering spot and tell them how much I don't like it, because tennis isn't the problem.

Some of us would rather not see the potential of this game squandered.

Griping and complaining will not cause nor prevent the potential of the game being squandered. FD is going to do what FD has planned. They may make some tiny changes at the community's suggestion, but they know what they want for the big picture. You might call that squandering the potential of the game, but complaining about it won't change the direction they are going.

I wouldn't have made scooped cargo from a weak signal source stolen and thereby illegal, but you don't hear me complaining about it. Because it's their vision and they aren't going to change it.

As for this comment
It's more like a kid only having one of these and people like you keep telling him he has so many different beads and paths to move them on. How could he possibly get bored?!

There are a lot of different activities in Elite: Dangerous. Unlike the image, they are vastly different. In the picture, you are just moving beads. There's a lot of paths, but it's still just moving beads. With E:D, you have trading, bounty hunting, exploring, mining, doing missions to retrieve stuff, taking sides in a conflict zone etc. How are those things as much alike as moving different beads on different tracks? They aren't. Your argument is fallacious.

It's OK if he is bored, even if he has only one toy. And I don't care about "different beads and paths", whatever that means. What's not OK is to hear him publicly whining about a toy that he finds boring.

So, haven't played in a few weeks. Decided I would at least get elite rank in combat, all I did before I stopped playing was combat zones and bounty hunt. Took a few days to get from deadly or w/e it was to Elite, figured I would go to the founder's world and either park it there until 1.3 or buy an Asp for exploration. Bought the Asp, flew out a few hundred light years...and this (exploration) has got to be the dullest game play I have ever experienced. I don't even really play a game, I watch shows with the game window running on another monitor and every now and then click in the game...How in the world do people find this fun (not boring)?

OK. You are clearly trolling, but I bite. How about:

OK if he is having fun, even if he has only one toy. And I don't care about "different beads and paths", whatever that means. What's not OK is to hear him publicly whining about a toy that he finds incredibly fun.

There fixed for you.

Yes, you are incorrect. There are a lot of copies in Elite: Dangerous. But not everything is a copy of a copy of a copy. And even if you are right, it's irrelevant. Space travel is inherently boring. They could get around the boredom, but it wouldn't be Elite, and it wouldn't be a space sim; it probably wouldn't even be a very good space game. I thought traveling into the stations in the original Elite was boring, but that's the nature of the beast.

I do agree we need more content, but Frontier had a choice. Make us wait another year for it to be full of content, or release it when they did and push patches. I think they made the right decision. If I had had to wait another year, I would be saying things like, "Please!! Just release the dang thing and update it as you get things done. I want to play." While no one can be absolutely sure about this, they likely would have lost a significant fraction of their audience; say 10 to 30 percent. That adds up to millions of dollars. So I think they made the right decision.

And I'm not threatened by people complaining. I am just tired of it. I hear it every day at work and then I come home and check the forums and a good portion of what I see is whine, whine, whine. It gets old after a while.

SIM? This? Since when? This is an action pew pew game. No sim here... It is ok some people like that, but to call ED a sim?!

As has been said to death, if you don't like it, don't do it. And stop whinging about it. There are lots of games I've bought that I don't find interesting. I'm certainly not going to waste my time finding their forums and complaining about them. I know from reviews that other people do enjoy them, so my conclusion is simply that the game isn't for me...
And I really must try harder to stick to my plan of avoiding these threads...
Oh, and I enjoy exploring. But I don't have to justify it just because you don't.

Why bother quoting me if you aren't even going to respond to the one question I had? I am genuinely curious. Why is it fun for some people? Are they doing it differently than me? Do they not watch movies like I do when they do it? Some questions I really would like to have answered. I get that, in the end, we may just see things differently, but I am curious if we are going about it the same way. Maybe I am going about it the wrong way? The appeal is just a mystery to me...

Really? Then why wouldn't you check all the other threads in the forum on this subject and describing how people are enjoying exploring? There are loads of them.

I have. Nothing explains why they enjoy it. They are full of pictures and theorycrafting and stuff, but nothing explains how they do it or why they think it's fun. Plus I am already subscribed to this thread.

But hey, thanks for quoting part of what I wrote, and ignoring all the questions. Apparently you cannot answer them or you just want to argue?

The appeal is just a mystery to me...

When I first took a test for programming aptitude, a number of names were read out who should stay seated, the rest were asked to go to another room. Once the division was made we, the seated, were told that we were part of 15% of the population that had the possibility to become programmers.

The reason was that we thought differently to the other 85% of people, and we had just been tested on our way of thinking.

Why don't you like exploring in Elite? - you and an explorer think differently. The game has aspects that appeal to different types of people, and the one group just is never going to "get" the appeal of a different type of playstyle that another group loves. It's only a problem if one group then tries to have things changed to suit their way of playing.

That may be true, but even the explorers (the ones that "enjoy" it) need something else happening in the background.

They need to be "distracted" from something that is "fun" for them?

Oh and I don't dislike exploring, though I do dislike it in Elite. In DayZ exploring is full of risk and around every corner is the prospect of death. I liked that, it kept me on the edge of my seat. I do not like watching movies and occasionally clicking on the game window.

No they don't.

"Some" explorers might. Explorers as a whole do not need to be "distracted".

Don't tar a whole group because of a small section of that group.

And as I stated ..... you think differently - and don't "get" it :)

You are doing the same thing in your response. "No they don't" who is they? The explorers that don't like to be distracted? Is that the majority of explorers or a minority (the explorers that don't need a distraction)?

*
Maybe I should make a poll? Has anyone already done one on that?

"When exploring do you do anything else?" yes/no or possibly a list of other things, such as listening to music/audiobooks/watch videos etc.

<Long sigh>
Whatever.

I'm not ignoring your question - I suggested looking at other threads where it has been answered ad infinitum. But if none of them help you understand why people enjoy it, then there is nothing I can say that would change this.

Just wanting to argue? Well, if that is how you want to read it, then I doubt anything I could say would be understood in the way it was intended. So I won't bother.
