FDL sucks

Sold back my FDL today. That fuel tank is just stupid. Even with scooping at each viable star, I found myself in constant fear of being stranded. A few bad jumps and I'd be left with a 4 million credit bill due to having to self destruct. Rant over.

Fair enough. Although you could use the galaxy map filter to show only scoopable stars. If you find a gap between scoopable stars, go for the shortest route for a jump or two.

I find that even my Vulture has a better jump range than my FDL.

I did a lot of big game RES hunting in my FDL lately to really get to know it. But because of its slower turn rate, I'm back in my Vulture. Cheaper to insure, too. I'm still not sure about that huge hardpoint.

FYI, 1.3 will bring extra fuel tanks for internal compartments. :)

What I do if I want to go somewhere quickly (well, less slowly) is to plan a route to the destination using "fast", filter to show only scoopable stars and then check that there are no long stretches of unscoopable stars on the route. If there are, I get to the bad patch and plot another route, and so on.

What I usually do when time isn't an issue is to plot a route in "economy" mode, I have no fuel worries doing that.

Never been stranded in my FDL and have often covered thousands of light years in a day with it.

Something as small as an A2 scoop is sufficient for economy routes, and an A4 or A5 scoop make even the longest trips relatively painless as long as you make sure you avoid long stretches of unscoopable stars.

I dont mean to be offensive here, but I fail to see how anyone could fear being stranded in civilised space past your first few days of play.

Its VERY easy to plan your route in stages if needed, but even plotting directly to your destination, there will often be convienient stars to scoop along the way.

Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. A little less laziness goes a long way, plan your route, you are travelling light years, not going around the city block.

It's a combat ship. I really don't get all the complaints about the size of the fuel tank. I don't use mine to travel, frequently.

FDl has pretty much the same manoeuvrability as the Python but it is a cheaper option when you kit it out for combat.

SquidofLove has done a great video comparing the FDL and the Python:

Yepers, saw that vid some time ago. Thanks for throwing it out there anyway, the guy's giving some good consumer advice.

I'm almost at a 'fair-enough' Python money but can't help not eye the Fer de Lance. That huge hardpoint... must... resist!

It's a lot of work for very little gain with the cannons, fixed or gimballed. Haven't tried the PA in it yet, though.

Hm. I run a large cannon on my Dropship nowadays and I think it's baaad aaass. Provided the Dropship's fly-everywhere-but-where-pointed nature, the accuracy is not bad either, not bad at all. That's not to say I'm Milky Way's Red Baron. Which I'm not.

It's the positioning of the huge hardpoint on the FDL that makes it tricky. You can lift your nose, for sure, but then you can't see the impact of the shot. ;-)

You wouldn't go on a date in a pick up truck, have a race in a 1.1 diesel fiat 500 or go to the shops in a Formula 1 car.

Think what you are trying to do and buy a ship instead of buying a ship and then thinking what you want to do.

The problem with the FDL is moving around the galaxy.
Got a CG 140ly away? Well that's half an hour of your life you won't get by hoping from star to star to get to it (yes, slightly exaggerated lol)!!
I would keep mine if it had a better range. (keeping it to see what 1.3 gives. Don't want to lose 10% until I have to).

Yep this will solve the issue of small fuel tanks when system-hopping up to a point. Adding another 16T of fuel should be enough for most, although you'll still need to refuel for longer journeys so if your class 5 and other class 4 module slots are already taken up you're down to scooping 24T of fuel with a class 2 fuel scoop, which will be uninteresting.

Ah, but you don't know if you don't try. For myself, I like to try out all of the ships. It is, after all, a game. ;-)

Exactly. Fit a big scoop, jump 19 times, dock, find a place where I can swap out the scoop for a SCB and get in the frey. It was an hour.
