People using hacks

There does seem to be real resistance the idea that any hacking whatsoever might exist in this P2P game with virtually no anti-cheat measures. Any tales that mention the word "hack" instantly bring numerous responses accusing the OP of lying or lacking knowledge, or posters saying "well I've never seen any hacking", implying that claims to the contrary are like claiming to have seen bigfoot or something.

The boost speed listed there is not accurate at all. It says the FDL boost speed is 350, most of us know that with a pretty standard loadout it can easily go over 400, mine goes 406.

Most of us know the boost speed listed is that of a stock ship. I would not know the maximum speed acheivable by fitting good thrusters and stipping down weight (never had an Orca myself), but I do know there is a built-in cap on everything within the game of 500m/s, and getting anything more than 20%-25% increase in speed is probably a cheat - unless there is a bonefide example that someone could provide me with?

please don't do that.

What? Post links to info? :D

Feel free to ignore my comment about lag which is the most probable explanation.

Sure he could of been cheating, people do, but it's more likely that it was just lag, because 90% of the time the game lags in open with more than just you in an instance.

Actually, I agree, and think lag is as good an explanation as any. I've seen rubberbanding happen (which is quite amusing when an NPC Anaconda bounces back and forth).

My Eagle - designation "Thundercougarfalconbird" - came out of the shipyard with a top-rated speed of 240m/s in normal mode, with a boost to 350m/s.

I have surpassed both ratings simply by having a non-stock loadout. Top-end speed is now 248m/s, top boost is 360m/s.

Further, I have upgraded the power plant and distribution systems to allow for faster boosting when four pips are to Engines and two are to Systems. As such, I can maintain an AVERAGE non-SC speed of a little over 300m/s just by flooring it and keeping it floored.

No hacks. Just bein' a gearhead. Perhaps this one was too.

The moral?

Just because someone does something better than you doesn't mean it's a hack. Maybe they just know something you don't. -Sid

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaang. That boat can MOVE!

while we might all agree that with specific fitting, one can go above the mentionned speed, if OP's statement of 1000m/s is true, this is abnormal

i higly doubt that even this orca can go past 450 or 500m/s http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60p,,2-8S9Y3mA02C6u22,
unfortunately ED shipyard doesn't update the speeds according to fitting (only the stock speed) :(

Depends, like I said given that lag is the norm in open, it could be quite normal.

Then again he could be hacking. Do people really find it super fun to sit in a thread and speculate about how if one guy was cheating or not?

OP should have reported the player and given a link to the video (if there is one) to FD and continued on.

Lag does seem like a possibility, on the face of it. I've never seen it myself - so I'm not sure whether it's possible to tell visually. For example - does the ship in question "jump" from spot to spot? I can imagine manifestations of lag that appear as movement rather than instant transportation.

So maybe a video wouldn't even prove anything. It would probably help rule out silly mistakes, like the OP being accidentally in reverse! Not that I'm suggesting this is the case.

The OP may be reluctant to post a video here - would it count as naming/shaming?

I've experienced lag (in the CZs of Lugh) and NPCs and CMDRs were definitely doing impossible things with their ships! So that sort of behaviour - accelerating beyond normal parameters - could well be down to lag.

That's because, in the VAST majority of instances, that's exactly what happens.

I won't post the link to the cheat wiki, because it will probably result in a banning for me, but it has been accessed almost 5K times since it was set up (in March I believe), and that doesn't take into account the download links that were on that same site in the forum thread which has been going since June last year (i.e. Premium Beta), and that has 158K views to date. I think that hacking in this game is a bit more common than rocking-horse poo, and I don't think it's in any danger of being stamped out yet, especially when people have been hacking since Premium Beta and haven't even had a sniff of any interest in what they are doing from the devs.

I have seen latency speed issues where craft bounce around, this was not that, this was smooth, this was deliberate, and he did it 3 times, all the same result. the same guy crashed a twitch community event run by subsynk and when attacked didnt take any damage, we are combing the footage for an exact time stamp.

EDIT: the video for exploiting shields is here http://www.twitch.tv/time_of_chaos/v/4155894 time 3 hours 44 minutes in. currently uploading speed hack video

Yeah, yeah, we know about the shield exploit. That's not what you posted about though. How long will this video take to upload?

Well that's not the shield exploit, that's an obvious hack. Still, probably get removed as it is naming and shaming.

Why did his shields go down if he was using an exploit?
Looked like he didnt get shot much until the other ship shot him.

he got shot at and it did nothing, as well as ramming a bigger ship at high speed twice. Who knows what the hack actually does? Maybe sets your maximum shield strength to 999% and only once you lose the first 899% the UI starts showing shield damage?

I'm not sure if that is or isn't cheating but I do know that reporting people is a pointless exercise as they are not banned, even after multiple occasions of hacking/cheating. I myself have simply stopped reporting anyone now as there's no point.

If you think reporting people via the mechanism FD wish them to be reported is a pointless exercise, how much point do you expect there to be in creating a forum thread on the topic?

If they are cheating, report them, block them, move on.
