Power Play...speculation

Ships, specifically for mining would be cool, especially as they could have completely different art designs and be unique. Much like a cargo ship is unique from a combat ship etc.

Although, the Type 7 looks like the best "mining" ship used at the moment for that, in my opinion aha.

Well any ship can be speciallised, through caracteristics or module, but as long as any ship can equip any module, a mining ship would probably be just as much a cargo ship, and vice versa.

I bet they add in a ship transfer feature , to move those unused ships around the galaxy.

Not unless it's another extra feature, it doesnt seem like it would be enough for the powerplay core thing.

Given the political developments I suspect that we'll see players involvement in the political machinations increase with the new release, maybe taking special jobs for the parties involved (the senators in the Empire, the president, shadow president and vice president in the Federation).

Players will have a hand in the power plays of these individuals, thus powerplay.

This is why the mission system needs overhauling from the original simple version.

I think I recall some official statement that all ships should be usable for every activity in the game - to some extent. In that meaning none of the current ships is restricted to a single purpose - even a Eagle can be used for trading - to some very little extent. :p

That would be sweet, it's on my "top-3-wanted" list for sure! (next to proper NPCs and passenger missions).

I fail to see what a mining vessel would be, with the modular approach we have, many ships can already be turned into a mining ship. with drones that wont change. Except that more people will give mining another go.

In that vane then, why bother having "combat" or "cargo" ships? may aswell go the route of X:Rebirth and just have 1 ship and have different modules based on your thinking?

Specific mining ships could alter the whole mining module of the game, or it could give miners that little better RP that they are flying a miner ship, as opposed to a T6 kitted out for mining. Simple things like that can go a long way.

Well what i mean is i fail to see when i look how ships & module work how a ship could only be dedicated to mining, it would probably just be as good for trading. And couldnt be just called a "mining ship"

Michael said it will be really big change. All things they mentioned in Newsletter they called as 'minor changes'.
I think they totally rebuild weapons, missions and gameplay. Released game is polished beta 3. I think Powerplay will be similar to what They would like to launch at start.

In its current state I agree completely. What I was refering to was a complete overhaul to mining would be needed "if" there ever was to be a dedicated mining ship.

For instance, a mining ship would be multicrewed (i believe this is something that will happen anyway?) id see it as having no guns at all but instead utilise mining drills. The pilot would fly and operate the drones, a navigator would find and scan the better 'roids and the driller would scan the 'roid for best position to drill (mini game etc)

This is all hyperthetical (and something id love to see) but this is how a dedicated mining ship "could" work.

Hoping this clears up what i was getting at :)

Maybe this has been posted before, but in the Xbox Magazine article mentioned in the newsletter they talked about the rising tensions between the Empire and the Federation, and that flying in the territory of one of them while being friendly with the other one would not be a good idea.
As this does not play a role yet at the moment (you can be friendly/allied with anyone at the same time), to me, this suggests that allegiance will play a far bigger role. This ties in with the overhauled mission system where your allegiance and rank will give you access to more specialized missions.

It's all speculation of course and what shape this allegiance / war between powers thing will take, I have no idea.

I was thinking about ship design more than anything.

In Elite we know ships have been specially made with trading or combat in mind and while you can use all of them for mining there's no specific ship design in a sense.

For example, the difference between a Type 7 and an Eagle.

Something similar to the image below as an example:

This definitely isn't something I think will be the core of Power Play, or in Power Play. We may never see ships like that.

Could be interesting to see.

A mining ship that can mine multiple asteroids in one go, twice the size of an Anaconda with it's own fleet of drones to collect the resources...maybe that's to far aha but we have yet to actually see dedicated mining platforms, even those that wouldn't be player controlled.

But obviously that's moving away from Power Play.

Exactly, people need to understand the fact that the additions we've see so far about Power Play are minor and "haven't scratched the surface."

I just hope people don't start expecting ridiculous things and then being disapointed when it's announced.

We have to look at what we've been told already and then the name, "Power Play." The clues are all there for us to speculate; hence the name of this thread.

Then explain the "ASP EXPLORER".

;)

;)

The original Asp design was as a military vehicle, and was redesigned as a more general purpose ship and renamed to Asp Explorer when the design was taken over by Lakon.

As a mental exercise though - while we wait for Michael to release a dev update or newsletter - taking the Asp as a base how would you modify it to be a specialised "Asp Mining"?

...but in all honesty, just put mining lasers, good power systems, good refinery module and max out the cargo holds on it... I heard something about mine droids that help to pick up the ore, so put them in too once they are available.

I am expecting:
Local Community goals for
- Station Expansion
- Colonization
- Degrading systems if goals arent met
- Persistent NPCs
- Possibility to align with minor factions
- More background simulation stuff. Maybe complete overhaul

I'd love to see allegiance to one of the main factions become more important by at the same time alienating you from the other. That would finally give us the opportunity to make a meaningful choice. (It would turn the reputation "checkboxes" into reputation "radio boxes", so to speak ;) ) Would probably give the game a whole new feeling!

I don't really care to be honest because I am happy with all the mechanisms that are in the game currently. Honestly I hope they don't screw up exploring at all.

I also hope the Diamondback is legit. I am looking to upgrade from my Cobra to an Asp explorer but if the Diamondback ends up being better for my purposes, I might end up getting it. With the mining updates that people have been yammering on about though it's probably going to be more geared towards mining which is pretty meh in my book. That being said, I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS COMING!!!!!!!

no matter what happens, they could fix every single bug and make the game perfect for everyone and people would still complain no matter what so idk. I am happy with it as is.

I'll be surprised if it's not about interacting more meaningfully with either the minor or major (or both) factions to increase their power. With the possible addition of player factions if they've got over the (nonsensical) dislike of any hint of 'executive'. It's such a relatively 'cheap' way of adding value to the game - both in terms of development time and bandwidth.

You seem to be very clear about how you feel about the update! :D

The only thing I'd add to this is to remove the disc scanner, since that's the only real "explored" bit in it. More specialised "standard" versions will be possible in 1.3... perhaps stations will sell "Cobra Explorers" with extra fuel tanks and intermediate scanners, "Mining Asps" with collection and resource scanning drones, more cargo holds, and basic refineries, and so on. Or perhaps they'll just sell continue to sell base models and leave the specialisations up to us.

It'd make an interesting addition though... perhaps you could purchase a "standard mining upgrade package" or "standard security package" with a basic KWS, basic interdictor, and slightly uprated weapons when you buy your new Adder or Viper the way you might order roof racks or leather trim with a new car today, allowing you to jump straight into mining or "security" if you wanted the "normal package" without having to find the bits yourself. Of course if you wanted a bigger refinery or bigger weapons for instance you'd still have to go searching for it.
