Stuttering, almost a year later......

I'm more than willing to say that there could be some issue on the game's end in regards to how it interacts with certain setups, rather than a fault with your machine. I'm saying I think that claiming "most players are having this issue" is an attempt to make your issue seem bigger than it is - if "most" players were having this issue we'd know. It certainly isn't happening to me or anyone I know who plays and I play regularly with a pretty big group.

It could even be a pretty large percentage of players, but I think claiming "most" (or in Sanderson's case, insinuating that all) are experiencing this is pushing reality a bit.

I'm not saying that there's not a problem, or that FD shouldn't look into it (and I believe they are). I'm saying I don't think "most" players are getting it.

There's a plethora of "stuttering" type issues that may or may not be the same issue. We just don't know. Freezes, lag, stuttering, jaggies, hippty hop, flippity flop, what ever you want to call it, it's way past time it was fixed.

You haven't been around here very long have you?

the support forum is a rather good indication that there IS a problem and not with 10 players.

I've said before and I'll say it again here that I think FD wasn't ready for this kind of project. They've done a good job, considering everything, but this is the kind of thing that even unlimited budget AAA studios struggle with. I think the game should've stayed in beta phase (even an open beta, or "early access") for a lot longer than it did.

I've enjoyed the game but it's still rough around the edges in some areas and I hear a lot of complaints along the lines that a retail game shouldn't be this rough, and they're right. I think FD was trying to get Elite out as fast as possible, perceiving Star Citizen as competition.

Aye bud you caught me I bought the game yesterday and I've only been reading the forums for a few hours. What do I know?

Not to mention the (now gone) previous 2 "ticket" systems FD deleted.

Another old issue that's been beat to death over and over. Difference is, FD may actually be able to fix the stuttering, maybe.

What do you know? Apparently not very much.

You assume they completely understand all the interplays in the engine and game code, I suggest that's not the case as evidenced by the fact there are still unresolved issues. The facts speak for themselves unless you believe they could fix the game but choose not to because "it isn't part of their vision for the game", like they same d when they realized they could not keep he promise of offline solo play.
Keep offline out of this, it is completely unrelated to this issue and will only cause the thread to degenerate.

Of course they don't completely understand every interaction. Anyone who has worked on a complex software project like this one would understand that. There are several types of stutter that occur in the game, each of which presents its own set of challenges to fix:

1. Microstutter. As per the big thread, this occurs all the time, and appears to be an occasional runt frame. Not everyone experiences this.
2. Planetary stutter. As per my previous post, related to the generation of textures for planets.
3. Hyperspace stutter. Stutter occurs at the beginning of hyperspace sequence.
4. General stutter. There *are* performance issues in certain ring systems, and in stations. Some of these lead to frame rate drops and thus the appearance of stutter.

As you can see, when we talk about "stutter" it means different things to different people. The effort required to find and fix each will differ, and yes: optimisation is required in some areas of the game still.

Does anyone who claims to have buttery smooth performance have any videos online? Say, approaching a planet with several moons at speed and scudding through them while looking around (i.e. not a plain forward view where it's easy to miss some stutter)?

As Sanderson says, even the FD twitch streams have stutter.
As above, depends on what stutter you're talking about. Most people get stuttering in instances 2 and 3 above, some have the microstutter in 1 and 4 will usually depend on hardware and graphics settings.

The fact that so many different "stutter" issues can be listed speaks volumes doesn't it?

"Optimisations" (unfortunately) usually means lowering game visuals until it works.

Obviously the game stutters. Obviously it has for two years now. Obviously if they could fix it, they would have, or decided it was their vision to have a stuttering jerky universe to explore. What is the question you don't understand?

Not really. Any software product will have defects. It happens that this software product has a lot going on asynchronously, and defects relating to synchronisation tend to manifest in this way (threads getting delayed waiting on results of others, priority inversions, deadlocks, etc.). In my experience these are the hardest defects to find and fix, and generally require external tools - which may or may not exist - to analyse in detail the interactions that lead to the stuttering.

Stuttering sound fx in the clipper and T7 too (don't know if other ships do this), given up worrying about it, but does my head in.

I get horrible stutters near ringed gas giants. I'm running a 4790k at 4.8mhz, 16gb ram, and 2 EVGA 970's, both overclocked. I hear some people say it's a network issue, I'm running a 100mb/s connection. I do run wirelessly, but it's an AC router and adapter. I run at 2560x1440 and 144hz, on a gsync monitor.

They don't necessarily mean it's an issue with your network. Elite uses p2p architecture, meaning someone else with a bad connection can affect you.

I see. So this is normal and to be expected if not accepted? Rubbish.

The best anyone's been able to figure out is that's there's a whole host of contributing factors in the "stuttering" issue. Maybe several problems all interacting with each other. No one (not even FD) knows.

Only place I've seen stuttering is in Resource extraction, and that seems to be because it is 'switching' zones, from being in the asteroid field to being outside it, anyone able to confirm this? that they get stutter at a certain distance from it?

Christ, come off it already.

No. Thanks.

This needs to be fixed already. Ignoring it or sweeping it under the rug isn't going to make it go away.

And they're working on it. There is a staggering amount of code at work in Elite. More than any other game you've played. This code controls an entire virtual galaxy ranging from 1:1 scale planets to procedurally generated political plays. Obviously there are going to be some problems - optimization and, yes, time is required to fix these problems. Let them work.

Nobody is going to be able to snap their fingers and magically make the problem go away. Filling up a thread with snarky comments about FD isn't going to change that.

I agree also on the framerate mine seems to be locked no higher than 60fps how do you unlock it?
