Playing Elite with Google Cardboard

I have also found usb less troublesome, the problem seems to be the bandwidth of usb2, im experimenting just now with dedicated n wireless network just for the video stream. I use limelight as i have an nvidia card, around 30mbps seems to be a good rate of transfer, but im still testing. It really has came on alot in recent months, Colourcross is an even better headset once u try a few different optics in it. The phones firmware/software is a big part of the problem, streaming progs use alot of gpu so having access to the system kernel on phone, aswell as dpi and refresh rate can give you more breathing room.

I can't get the Headlook to work, how do you guys bind the X and Y axes in controls??? I can't see any raw data input in Freetracker either, but when I put output mode in Trinus in mouse, I can controll the mouse with cardboard.

Settings in ED are: Mouselook: off, default state: on, contunious and accumulate.

Well in the new version of Trinus appearently you have to set it to free pie redirect and it works, but the input is jumping all all over the place with my HTC One m7. Looks like a damn earthquake ingame. Filters aren't helping much... dang...

Nice video. I've added a link to it to my first post. Oh, and if people with Google cardboard want to watch your video, they don't need to stream it through Trinus. Youtube works just fine. :D

I got a cardboard copy in the mail yesterday and got it up and running with Trinus Gyre over USB and FacetrackNoIR/Pointtracker on my old comp and phone today.

800x480 samsung core plus

C2D e8500
8Gb ram
Radeon HD5850
SSD

Playstation Eye cam with IR filter removed.
DIY IR cap.

Noname cardboard copy.

Some rubber bands to hold the IR leds and the cardboard with the phone in it onto the a trucker cap.

It did run but performance wasnt good, especially in 3d SBS mode, with the resolution meaning that no text except sometimes the hull percentage being clear enough to read, still im happy it worked and even though there was some latency and the resolution was horrible i still ducked away and felt "oh" when i almost smashed into an asteroid in the basic combat training area.

Im looking at putting together a new comp for running Elite and a HMD, either cardboard based if i can borrow or buy a better phone or i might actually get a DK2 even though the CV might be just around the corner.

We shall see.

Anyone who's having difficulties with pairing the phone with opentrack to get a smooth response via gyro, try the freepie app provided by opentrack themself. Worked a lot better for me instead of Trinus Gyre, no more earthquake like spikes that makes playing impossible. Seems like Trinus only sends RAW data and amplifies it way too much. With Freepie app you can only send the combined orientation data, which is a lot less jumpy in numbers.

This post helped me a ton:

You have to fumble around in mapping with open track a bit. I had to use roll as pitch, and invert all three axes. I also applied a normal spike filter. It still sometime accelerates to the edges without stopping with a slight movement, but immersive gameplay was finally achieved on my end. My nose hurts.

I've bought colorcross which I'll use with my Galaxy S4. Which 3D program do you guys use. I find the inbuilt 3D to be weak, if not only in the cockpit, when I was testing it out on my 3DTV. TriDef profile will also not work since it renders background and lights at wrong depth.

Hi guys,

Trinus VR here, just thought I'd join the thread to keep track on the news :)

I know the performance is still not that good, and have to keep working on improving it... and making it easier to use... and see what the issue is with the integrated FreeTrack/TrackIR support (ideally, no external tool should be needed, but some games use a protocol version that is not compatible with my code... ok, my code is not compatible with the protocol version used ;) )

Anyway, let me know if I can help with something and stay tuned for the updates! (@Phoenix_Dfire, that video is quite cool, but it seems the server version is a bit outdated?)

I tried it with one of the prebuilt plastic headset things. I can't rememebr the name of it now but it looked almost identical to the archos one.

I found teh the case would press on teh power switch on my phone occasionally and at other times the connection would drop. The text was rubbish but I expetcted that.

There was a real sense of presence though and I found myself ducking a couple of time docking and cutting it close to the top of the letterbox, or flying too close to another structure etc.

It was fun for a bit, but I'm happier with the 3 monitors and trackir for now. Really hope that OR will live up to expectations, its looks like it might be a whole new level!

Couple it with a full "Feel Three" http://www.feelthree.com/ and the man cave is complete!!

Instead of downloading the latest binary from OpenTrack, it works better with the 2.2 stable release.
https://github.com/opentrack/opentrack/releases/tag/opentrack-2.2-stable-20141112

The 2.3 branch is still unstable. I get spikes and strangeness with 2.3.

2.3 is recommended for VR and smartphone headtracking. 2.2 have not a freepie tracker support, upgraded main engine and accela.

If I use Trinus Gyre with USB tethering option for some reason I cannot connect to the internet since it makes the TG connection the main one. How can I fix this?

You have to set your network priority. When you have a USB tethered phone, it will create a new network using that phone. You need to go into network setting and then adaptors and give you're normal network a higher priority than the Tethered network.

Hi guys,

Anyway, let me know if I can help with something and stay tuned for the updates! (@Phoenix_Dfire, that video is quite cool, but it seems the server version is a bit outdated?)

Oh it was recorded using the previous server. I think you released a new one a couple of days after I finished the Video (It took a long time to do!)

Thanks Phoenix. Anyway upon some testing I find this very unplayable. My phone is 1080p and even though the games I've tested are running over 100fps the fps on the phone looks to be bellow 30. I'm using USB connection with High image quality :(

EDIT: Used LimeLight and its hell of a lot better an a lot more playable, smooth as butter. Now if only the text was readable :)

as Phoenix said, you need to change network priority, here's a link for that: http://superuser.com/questions/403350/how-to-select-default-network-interface-for-internet
regarding speed and resolution, from my testing (with other games), 1280x720 worked fine (about 55fps), higher than that it will drop noticeably, so either 1280x720 or fake3d at 960x1080 (maybe even a bit higher). There's an update coming soon that should improve the numbers a bit, but still need to work to get those much higher. Also working out an auto quality setting to try and automatically tune for certain minimum performance... might get the image quality too low, but at least simplifies things (for users that don't want to tweak for ideal settings).

and, Phoenix, fair enough about the vid, I keep updating quite often :)

I've got a bit further with this 'project'. I recently installed Win 8.1 as my 7 copy was cracked and I was fed up with update issues so I swallowed and paid up "(

I managed to get Trinus Gyre working with a USB connection and using the Nexus' gyroscope as a mouse control for Head Look.

Wow! It works. It's not reverse tethered ASFAIK as I think the tablet (Nexus 7 2013 model) needs to be rooted to the PC to enable that feature, something that I know nothing about (any advice and layman explanations appreciated).

The head look with various tweaks works well. I've nearly got it 1 to 1 with my movement. With quality adjustments on the Trinus server I get good detail even with Nvidia resolution set at 960 X 1080 to compensate for squashing and getting circles to appear symmetrical.

I'm getting blocky pixels ( whatever that's called) in dark patches when there's movement but it is a mobile tablet an not a DK2 after all (suggestions?).

Just did the tutorials last night as I didn't want to mess up online until I worked out how to improve HUD colours for clearer text, but enjoyed flying round Space Ports and Outposts, manoeuvring through the infrastructures and taking in the scale.

I only have an EVGA 740 GT and I'm wondering if a better GPU would improve the blockiness in dark parts of the screen. Does anyone know if the GPU affects the streaming to tablet? I guess so as the Nvidia Shield requires a higher card than mine to work but I'm guessing.

Anyway, I hope my enthusiasm hasn't been too long winded and any remarks or suggestions regarding improvements would be appreciated.

Thank you for reading and fly safe Commanders.

PS so far I've been using Fake 3D on Trinus and not in game Side by Side but I'll try that later.

Hi Avago Ero,

A better gpu won't make much difference on streaming performance. The dark patches while moving can be fixed by disabling the Enhanced motion option (in Advanced Mode>Video), or reduced by using a higher quality setting. The advantage of Enhanced motion is that it further reduces latency when it is most needed (ie. when turning your head)
Oh, and reverse tethering wouldn't work anyway (and doesn't bring any advantage).

Cheers

Hello loxai! Thank you for your programme!

I'm not sure why Trinus doesn't work directly with Elite Dangerous. I think support for it had to be patched in for Opentrack, so maybe it uses some sort of protected protocol? No idea. I can't make sense of this, but it might be helpful for you:
