Just makes me laugh that we have to read it all else where and never directly posted on the forum devoted to it and paid for by David :S

Yes I know it is not saying much I just thought people would want to see it regardless.

I agree completely with porl though, we have to read it elsewhere and not here.

hmmmmm

I wish someone would ask something along the lines of

"Does Frontier have an actual person or team currently working on Elite IV on a regular basis or is it shelved and not currently being worked on pending other outcomes"

Personally I think it is shelved. I don't think there are people working at Frontier right NOW in a meeting room meeting about about Elite IV.

Well, it's a game that we've been looking at for a long time, and we are still working on.

It's not that the game has been in development for a long time -- we were in development, and we stopped because it wasn't going the right way.

What? You're either "still working on" it, or you've "stopped" doing so.

Do us a favour mate, and stop taking the p*** out of the fans. You've dangled this carrot in front of us for far too long, it's about time you got some stick for being a fraud.

Ah, the good old non-commital comments from Braben effectively saying nothing during an interview, and Micheal here saying there's no news to tell (not even that David Braben's been asked about Elite 4 in an interview...)

Oh dear. We're going to feel a bit foolish this time next year, when we're all playing single-player and multi-player Elite 4!

:(

What??

Could be a mobile version, as they seem to be taking an interest according to the interview.

Also given that next year is the 20 anniversary of Frontiers release they may be thinking about doing something with that.

Quick question...with Michael's post above...is he actually from Frontier ?

Also even though there may be "nothing to say", just to hear that Frontier have allocated people regular meetings on Elite IV would help but then again if they did that others might try to rush the next one so this way, they say nothing no one knows anything and they can come out with a tada.....

maybe.........

All I know is that if this is the case I would like some "extras" from Frontier :) Big printed map....thick manuals..... etc :)

Until anything else all I can say is sure I want Elite IV providing it is not restricted to online as I want to play it without internet if needed, and I hope it comes out but I shall believe it when I see it....ie actually in my hands. Even if announced I will be skeptical even with artwork I shall be skeptical.... :)

Pretty soon physical media will be history, everything will be streamed via this interweb thingy. My hope is that companies will offer a "special edition" of big games, with all the goodies you mention.

That is good to know Michael. Does David ever glace at the posts here ?

@Steve I am hoping Elite IV it if exists will be a testament to how physical media is WANTED. I for one want a big map/maps, I want a huge big thick manual I want the experience to be there EVEN if I have to print out the manual because it is on CD I would even go with that providing it is there. I really miss the experience of the old game documentation. Look at the excellent manuals Elite, Frontier and First Encounters has. I love them.

I certainly want physical copy with big big maps and several manuals for the "experience" we are so lacking now. I hate steam to be honest. I hate the fact that whilst the AUD is HIGHER than the US one, US steam titles are FAR cheaper than the AUD ones and it is a damn download !!!! one was $19.99US and $79.99AUD !!! what !!!! <GONG> bye bye steam ! I want an Elite IV box to put next to all the other versions I have (see my signature below..yes I have all those boxed). I want to buy it go home install it sure have a CD key etc but I should not need internet to install or play it, I hate that!!

Big box and documentation will only go if people ALLOW it to go. Adding to the gamer's experience is important I think and Elite IV *CAN* make a difference.....it is cheaper NOT to put it all out and make it limited etc of course I don't think Elite IV will go here, it will again be DIFFERENT and will LEAD the way NOT follow!

It's frustrating to say the very least, we all want E4 but at what cost?

Frontier pulled the plug on The Outsider because it wasn't upto scratch. I've no idea how much that would have cost them! Some of us will remember the "Gametek" fiasco :mad: they forced the game into production way before it was ready. The last thing I would want is a E4 which wasn't a total spectacular and a absolute joy to play in single and multiplayer mode etc..

However I know on more than one occasion DB has said that E4 is being worked on, From Styggron's link-

(DB: Well, it's a game that we've been looking at for a long time, and we are still working on.)

Read what you like into that, but it's not the first time he's said the game is being worked on, to my memory he's never said it's been cancelled. And as Frontier has clearly stated for the moment, The Outsider has been shelved. It does give me some hope that E4 is still in the frame of being developed.

I remember somewhere either Michael (who I think works for FD???) :D or David Braben (who definitely works for Frontier) saying that the game engine used for The Outsider would be the one that E4 would be based on. As The Outsider was virtually finished maybe the team who worked on it have been switched over to E4? Just speculation but who knows???

Part of my job is to keep David (and other key members of the company) up to date with what's going on here in the forums and other parts of the community. I understand it is frustrating for you guys to just keep hearing me say "Sorry, I can't tell you anything.", but unfortunately that is the case. As David says we have been working on Elite 4 and have been at various times certainly in the ten years (nearly) that I've been here. As is the case with all of our projects, when we're in a position to go public with more information, we will.

Michael

So more of the same really. I forget how long i've been waiting for E4, given up on it arriving tbh, least before my demise due to old age, as all i hear and see is, er nothing.

In every interview it's the same standard responses, meaning nothing is happening. All this talk of 'we've been working on it on and off' means precisely diddly tbh.

While always hopeful, the fact remains it's a giant carrot dangled in front of Elite fans the world over, the taste of which is becoming rather unpleasant... I've achieved more doing an addon mod for Freelancer based around Elite than Frontier have for crying out loud, really sad we all still believe.

I for one understand Michael and I am also very thankful Frontier has this forum and that representatives such as he take the time to come and talk to the fans, not only that but it is part of his *job*.

Yes the Gametek fiasco as TJ mentioned in an previous post would be deeply engraved in David Braben's mind. I am sure the fans would agree that Elite IV needs to be the same standard as we are used to the previous versions in the way they would be

- revolutionary
- incredibly well thought out and designed
- have new concepts we have more than likely not seen before
- engaging
- unlike anything else.. (this is such a tall order!! think about it!)

David and Frontier can deliver this. I believe most of us would agree on this point.

I would rather not hear a thing and be totally blown away by an announcement that no, it is not in development but it will be launching soon! THAT is what I am hoping for.

If you put yourself in David and Frontier's shoes think how hard it is to come up with a "make a sequel that will be revolutionary and have all brand new things people have not seen before and not just improve the graphics and give you a bigger map" that is a pretty tall order there is so much to do.

I would much rather wait and let them get it RIGHT to the degree THEY want it to be as there is a LOT riding on this. Frontier already has a fantastic reputation they know full WELL the importance of Elite and how it has to be PERFECT it would certainly bolster the interest people have in Frontier, certianly it's image, we ALL KNOW it would be on the BBC news !! David is high profile.....but it has to be totally perfect. Yes chasing perfection is an impossible task but we have to TRUST the creative GENIUS that gave us this series. Do we want something revolutionary that will stop the world or just s sequel, I for one want the revolutionary version and if I may be so bold I would say so does David and Frontier, THIS is why there is the huge delays this is why they cannot tell you anything, you never know who else might be working on something similar or about to release something similar so if they listed their revolutionary things someone might put out a cheap thing similar then others would go "oh it is like that crap one was it ahh stuff it".......<GONG>.....no keep it under wraps I say ! Sorry but it makes sense commercially to me at least and this is what they are doing.

Imagine if you have a space trading game you think is "new" and you are thinking of the launch time and you hear the biggest name EVER is working on it, you would sure want your one out there first. Because no one knows what Frontier is doing bar themselves it is all a gamble. The X series did well but I keep coming back to Elite, sure there is the child nostalgia aspect of it which cannot be competed with.

To you Michael I again say thankyou for being here and listening, I believe the message is clear. :) To Frontier I thank you for this forum and I think this BIGGEST plus for me is that Michael has come here and told us he reports to the man himself about the goings on here. Sure that might just be normal administration but I believe it to be more than that I think David REALLY....I mean REALLY REALLY REALLY cares for the fans and he would be thinking "just WAIT till you see this !!!"

What gave me that impression ? Well sure David is a business man but his work as a foundation member of Raspberry pi really said quite a lot to me. He like so many of us saw the massive "gap" in education regarding programming, it is just not taught anymore, it is left to Universities (at least here in Australia and certainly in the UK where I have heard David talk about), and look at how revolutionary Raspberry pi is, you can see the passion in David's eyes where he said he wants schools to have it to nuture children and inspire. Remember it is the same inspiration withy David's Acorn Atom that GAVE us Elite !! along with Ian Bell. These are not just the words of a man in a business suit that ALL he cares about is money there is more to it than that, there is a passion there is a desire.......sure it needs to be commercially viable.... of course it does otherwise it would be commercially irresponsible and put reputation, shareholders and livelihood of employees in jeopardy.

I think David cares and I for one am far less skeptical now.

Sure you could say I was just taken in by a few words and that we have no new information, sure you can tell me I am seeing 2 and 2 and making 7 but for me I would say I am getting 1+1 and making 10 !! :) but for me just a few posts from Michael and what I have heard recently David talk about has meant a great deal in my attitude toward Elite IV, Frontier and David, and the catalyst was Michael coming in here and making his post.

I think when we get Elite IV it will be AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
