This changes almost nothing for me actually. I usually don't hit anything on my way in or out of stations.

But assuming I do hit something and get a bounty.. what's to stop me going back into the station to pay it off? If the answer is "nothing" then there's practically no change in gameplay for me.

You will not be able to pay off bounties for 7 days in the new update.

I crash into the station and explode more often than I get successfully scanned... :D

... in fact usually I only get scanned after I manage to survive bouncing off the station.

Well I hope that's not the case, Rankaze, but the Buckyball shall go on. It is, after all, an illegal race. Anybody who has participated in 'em has already demonstrated a willingness to risk their ship in completely unnecessary fashion for absolutely zero reward. (Except a bumper sticker of course. Everybody loves bumper stickers.) Really, this should make no difference at all unless you make a habit of using other ships as speed brakes.

For me, it just ramps up the pucker factor that much more. But then no one ever accused me of being smart. :D

Game on!

Intentionally? Not at all. But I have bounced off a number of ships at 200+ m/s in the slot during Buckyballs or while toying around with smuggling or because Fed fighters still fly in a straight line right at you when trying to scan!

As I said before, though... as a fine it wouldn't bother me a bit. Getting traffic tickets should totally be part of it. But surviving that incidental high speed collision only to get immediately vaporized by the station? Pass.

And yeah, one of the dev comments did indicate the station would attack you.

Also, there are so many ways for groefers to game this mechanic it's silly. Hopefully they will all be demonstrated in the beta.

I love the change. If it's a fine then it's easy to just pay off - if it's a bounty then it just makes this more like the cannonball run, the cops should be after us!

At the speeds we dock, they'll never scan us anyway... :)

You realize your wanted status is broadcast when you commit a crime, right?

If you survive the collision, the station will know you are wanted and engage you immediately.

Yes I do realise that, but I'm still fine with the change. I've also seen skilled CMDRs evading the station weapons and the vipers.

I may have a different mentality in my approach to Buckyball than some of you though - CMDR Raiko flies an Asp (just like he did back in Frontier Elite 2). So I'll be flying The Nomad at every Buckyball that I enter, even though it's hindered by those horrible medium docking bays and even though it's much harder to get through the slot in a hurry than a Viper or Hauler. I've spent millions on insurance costs at both BB6 & BB7. So for BB8 I'm not too worried about stations shooting at me.

I just think that it kind of ruins the fun.

I mean, part of the fun of a Buckyball is letting it all hang out. Pulling reckless stunts you'd never pull under any other conditions.

Remember, I was the guy who destroyed 17 Vipers, 4 Eagles, and 3 Sidewinders during BBR7. I'm not afraid of losing ships.

But when you actually survive one of those hairy moments by the skin of your teeth, somehow managing to barely graze that Type 9 in the slot rather than hitting it full on, getting instantly vaped by the station pretty much makes it meaningless.

I'm still remembering having an Orca turn sideways right in front of the slot for no apparent reason at Ray Port in BBR7 while I was undocking. I had already pressed the boost button when he did it, so I was committed (there is no stopping in a boosting Viper!); I had the choice of t-boning the Orca, or trying to go above him and get back down before the slot. I chose the latter, and I almost made it. Almost. I even managed not to hit the Orca. The thing is, if I'd grazed the Orca instead of avoiding it fully, I probably would actually have gotten through.

In 1.3, though, even if I had somehow managed to pull off that improbable maneuver, it'd have just meant getting blown up by the station lasers rather than exploding against the wall above the slot.

Honestly, between this change and the 7-day bounty thing (I have a bad habit of squeezing the trigger just a split-second too soon when engaging a target I KNOW is a pirate but don't have a scan on yet), the crime update will probably drive me out of Elite.

If we end up having to go to every little backwater planet to collect all those minor faction bounties, it will definitely drive me out.

Frontier is introducing tedious, draconian mechanics for all players to try to fix the actions of a very few. Punishing the innocent to deter the guilty is a bad way to go.

I suspect this is all fairly fluid though, the ramming mechanic will be tweaked as will the 7 day fine window so what we're seeing as the new proposal will be ironed out in beta and then nerfed somewhat.

But still I'm hoping that the station response to ramming becomes a fine rather than instant vaporisation, even if it doesn't start that way, as that seems like an easy grief opportunity

The dev responses have been pretty adamant that it will be a bounty. And they said they would not increase the speed limit above a level where it was impossible to destroy a stock Sidey.

So whatever speed an Anaconda with maxed out shields has to go to destroy a stock Sidey? The speed limit will be lower than that.

And yes, I'm convinced that this update simply gives the griefers better toys to play with than the ones they already have.

Another day, another Sag A* pip awarded!

CMDR TerranBlade! Front and center! It is with great pride that we present to you your Sag A* leaderboard pip and bumper sticker for completing Buckyball Run A*! (cough) It's just a shame you no longer have a ship to put it on. But there's nothing in the rules that says the ship has to make it back, so here's to the Lilly! Long live the Lilly II!

In this update, we also wish CMDR Halo Jones a speedy and safe journey to the center. CMDR Jones is the second Hauler to try and make the run, after the Jenny Linna ran into trouble and had to return to port. Good luck, Jones!

In the staging area, three more CMDRs are gearing up for a scenic ride through the galaxy: CMDR Madoc Owain in the Asp Moya, CMDR Phobus 11 in the Asp Heaven's Pride, and finally Buckyball 5 vet Dean Smith comes out to play sporting a zippy little Anaconda, the Athena. A 'Conda once held the top slot before CMDR Alot shut the Big Snake down... How long can that last?

It appears we have several CMDRs looking to take off this weekend. My advice? Let it be known you're heading out and make some new friends for the trip! Having fellow CMDRs to chat with on the way out made the light years just fly by. ;)

Good luck one and all! Me, I'm still about 19,000 LY out, having found a pair of absolutely stunning nebulae to explore. I may just retire out here.

Wait a minute... Checking stores it appears I only have about six day's worth of liquor left on board. So... I'll see everybody back in the core worlds in a week! :D

@Rankaze - Methinks you're over-reacting just a tiny bit....

Even if everything you've said is true about the bounty and stations firing at you... in my experience, a station has NEVER fired "the moment you get a bounty". You must be SCANNED before getting docking permission. If you ALREADY have permission and a scan has been started, as long as you zip through the slot before it completes, nothing happens. I've done that many times, never had stations fire on me once.

And tell me, since when has a Buckyballer got scanned and the scan completed BEFORE he enters the slot? At those speeds? :D

Even while inside the station, I open fire and break the no-fire-zone rule, I only get 400 CR fines... not bounties. Stations never fired on me.. just lots of big red WARNING messages. It obscures my target somewhat but nothing else really.

If you commit the crime in (or near) the station, it will be aware of it, just like all authority vessels are instantly aware when you commit a crime in their presence.

Since a docking crime is by nature committed inside the station.... it will be notified when you commit the crime.

It's the same as if you fire within the no fire zone.

Turn off "Report Crimes"? I never did that but could be tried in beta.

Plus, as many have said... as long as you don't hit anybody you're fine. So just... er... don't hit anybody :D

The other ship would have to have report crimes turned off. If it's an NPC, they can't turn it off.

And yeah, that not hitting anyone is not always so easy. NPC's do really stupid things in stations, as I'm sure you are aware.

I might have video of that blasted Orca. I'll have to look. I was usually recording while on a run, even when practicing.

The thing that infuriates me is that adding these restrictions makes it EASIER for griefers to kill players with little to no consequence than it was before!

It would make a whole lot more sense if it at least only gave you a bounty if you actually damaged the ship you hit.

The trouble here would be... what do you consider "damage"? Grazing shields? it would be "damage" too because shield levels would drop. Would this be "damage"?

Or if we only considered HULL damage, then yes that would be a better option. Right now we really are just reacting to words and announcements, and nothing is in-game/beta yet. So we could ALL be wrong and screaming for nothing... FD might have already got most of the issues sorted out, we just don't know.

Then traders who run without shields are the automatic victims in every collision...

I would need to see it in action in beta before I start getting worked up myself...

Rankaze, FoxTwo - chill on the ramming convo por favor. There's a bunch of other threads where you can actively chat about this without diluting our fine Buckyball experience. :)

Don't make me send you to Hutton Orbital without supper. :p

Apologies for the US Centric football ref... I lost my soccer dude with the yellow card. Use your imagination.

Actually I would welcome you sending me to Hutton Orbital right about now... Hull 74%, powerplant 69%, bunch o' modules sub-60%....

PUH-LEEZE SEND ME BACK TO CIVILIZATION!

Still 28,000 LY out :(

Gentle-peeps: you should check your front teeth at the door if you're racing with Buckey (he wins that category). However, if you are still feeling manly, perhaps you should try some racing in the "with gravity and [hopefully] friction" category these guys are flying their vehicles in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcSnu-zyUl4 (I recommend against drinking heavily and watching too closely...but, these days, I can't drink like I used to -- 24 and I'm done!) :) BTW, if anyone wants to race through the [RL] Tail of the Dragon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzipi3f7fW8) or (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzipi3f7fW8) in reverse in their convertibles, let me know. :D
