A request for Windowed Fullscreen / Borderless Window option

Borderless window mode

Once Elite: Dangerous gets closer to release, will the game support a "borderless window mode"? That is, a window mode that is full screen, with no borders, that releases mouse control to a second or third monitor on either side of the monitor that the game is running on under certain conditions (like being on the ESC menu or being docked or whatever)?

I really hope so... it's certainly annoying me that it doesn't at present.

As someone that runs three monitors using a great little program called Ultramon, I really hope E : D allows a borderless window mode too.

Multiple window support for the left and right 'cockpit view' info screens would also be very welcome. I know that is in the future request thread already though

I second that notion. Borderless Window is how I run most of my games nowadays, mainly for the faster alt+tabbing.:D

personaly i hope in full screen they disabled win key (why oh why was that ever made) . not fussed about windowed mode , i want to play elite not other things in the background

Personally, I expect full screen as the standard. I run a three monitor display. Center is main. I'd love for the game to have the option (at some point) of being able to display to three screens. Id have it full screen, displaying main view on center monitor, and side views on side screens.

However, wishes aside, I can see a problem with this. My main monitor is descreet gfx, and the sides are using motherboard GPU i.e. pretty crapy. So blue sky thinkings aside, it may not be practical for most, I mean, 3 monitors each with a beefy GPU.... ouch.

So maybe Windowed would not be so bad, IF they also had integrated web UI's to some of your in game systems. It makes more sense to me, to have web based UI for info feeds, any kind of informational systems i.e. help, and even cargo management, contracts etc. After all, it appears we need to login to play, so this same login can be used on any related Elite sites, allowing for the main game to take place in 3D, in client. With Web pages being used for auxiliary displays?

Same as me. Three monitors plus the superb little program Ultramon that I was more than happy to support.

I'd love to be able to put the side views on my two side monitors.

it sort of almost does Borderless Window Mode just now, so I guess it's their intention.

I use mouse and keyboard control. Not sure if that makes a difference.

I can have something (e.g. IRC or browser) on my second screen, I can press escape, activate the browser, type etc... then go back to game, press escape and regain control of the ship.

Where it falls down is if the item (such as a document) opens up on the main screen. Then I have to go back to options, re-enable full screen.

Good stuff mate. Glad it's there. Now i'm just hoping that we can have a triple monitor set up where the main view screen is on the central monitor and the left and right info screens on their respective left/right monitors, without distortion.

Borderless Window Mode?

Hey everyone Premium Beta user here,

anyone know if there will be borderless window mode for the game? In the current Alpha for us Beta folks it is only possible to switch between Fullscren or windowed. Is it possible that this might be implemented already in one of the later Alpha versions?

At the moment, no. Even Alt-Tab is something of a gamble at the moment :(

The fix to the crash on Alt+Tab was a really welcome one but I'd like to see the graphics options go a step further and include the option for "Windowed Fullscreen" / "Borderless Window" in a future build. I'm constantly tabbing out of the game on a dual screen set-up so forcing the game to minimise on each click on my second screen is a touch obnoxious.

Bonus Internet Points if you can guess which games are illustrated in the screenshots below...

I'd second this, in all games I play I use borderless windowed fullscreen so I can move the mouse to either of my other two screens without affecting the game...

Oh and the top one is WoW....

dunno about the other

Have read elsewhere that Borderless window forces GPUs to run at maximum all the time thereby causing possibility of overheating issues which it would not normally encounter.

Never heard this before, I run borderless in SWTOR all the time and monitor my GPU temps on my second screen. Haven't seen any evidence of overheating in two years. Used to play WoW exactly the same and no issues...

Games run better for me (higher FPS) in borderless windowed mode than in fullscreen.
Also, my monitor insists on having a refresh rate of 59.97 Hz in full screen (giving a slight flicker) - yet will work fine at 60Hz in windowed/borderless windowed mode. All a bit strange, and I have spent many hours trying to resolve - with no luck.
Just in case someone else has solved the problem - I have a clevo laptop, NVIDIA GTX-670M graphics - Optimus :( the external monitor is connected via HDMI, but has to pass through the on board intel HD 4000 graphics.

That has come up in the bug report forum with slightly different numbers and developer replies, but no real conclusion. If you have such a problem, I'd guess you best submit a ticket with your hardware report attached in the hope that FD manage to nail that gremlin to a wall.

The windowed fullscreen request has also come up before, and I still +1 it :)
