How can any player know? Even if they have found several in Strong Signal Sources in Lave how can they know they can't be found in other Signal Sources in other systems? Have they checked every signal source in every system since 1.2? It's an "exceedingly rare" spawn, not finding it isn't proof of anything except that, which we already know.

I agree.
IMO there are two ways for finding UAs:

1. Searching sss for the right convoy, this could be not easy because spawn rate is ridicolous and you need a wing for beating the huge escort.

2. Taking the right mission. Clues suggests that in that case, the convoy become scripted and... Disappears. In this case UAs can be located somewere, near pr far from civ space too, but who knows?

WSS is the wreckage of a hauler.

It does make sense to me that they would put them in WSS as a rare spawn for single players.
Others have said they got one too but can't remember where so it does suggest single players can get them.
Wouldn't really be balanced otherwise.

From my exp, never seen a wss or uss with ships having something in their cargo

Yes, TheSpaceTexan turned up when people started planning long trips to distant nebulae. I think he was only saying to look in SSS in the inhabited part of the galaxy.

Type 7 had the artifact, 2 eagles and (IIRC) a vulture on that side. Other side was a vulture and 2 vipers.
