Well, it looks kinda like a "baby station"... Maybe putting it on the rigth orbit will make it grow and spawn Thargoids?
I should mention that CMDR Wishblend reported acquiring an unknown artefact previously to Red Wizzard's announcement.
Does 5KLD mean anything? There is a repeating, pulsing pattern - a little morse code-ish on the audio. It begins straight after the 'train station jingle' bit (!)
My, admittedly crude translation in morse either reads 5kld or 5kaeks.

Just some more thoughts about the tones...
I agree that it has a binary quality to it, but it's a case of determining the start/end of each sequence. I also get 4 sequences before it repeats.
We don't know which way around the tones represent. Is down 0 and up 1 ? Or is it down 1, up 0?
It's going to take a little time to run through those permutations and offsets.

This is just a wild guess, assuming what digitalscream deciphered so far (M3) is all we're gonna get. There is a star cluster called Messier 3, or M3 in short. Could this be a hint? (Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messier_3)

Speeding it up x3 and having up = 0 down = 1

Just a thought... would the devs require us to use third party tools to figure this out? Is there a history of this in game? Or is the audio clue something we need to pursue in game, rather than 3rd party tools.

Will stay a little bit longer in 109 Virginis and collect a few more.
For the records: Limpets are suprisingly not illegal here. Maybe a good sign of the presence?
