Life as a Pirate

I want to try the various aspects of Elite, so for the next few days I have turned pirate.

How easy is it being a pirate? for the first 2 hours I have had:

asp: no stop, turned to fight at end, he was destroyed
vulture ind me: he was destroyed (cost 2 cells)
t6: not stop when asked, drives were shot out and hull left at 3%, scanned cargo and I ask for 1/4 of his rares, I give him 20 seconds, he combat logs...I go lave station and wait and sure enough Mr 3% turns up, I exchange my greeting and quickly destroy him.
clipper: not stop, he combat logs when hull is 80%

Amount earned from Piracy: $0 (well 200K was earned from NIC who ind me whilst waiting).

In this time it could have been possible to earn perhaps 4M trading. It is not-too easy being a pirate.

Yea its definitely not a Disney Pirates life lol. Your best bet is to find a Pirate group (in the Groups subforum) and see if you can wing up with another pirate willing to teach you the ropes, that and having 2 pirates on the same ships makes them a lot more likely to submit to your demands.

If you're only doing it for the money, then I should imagine that it is largely a waste of time. I guess most folks that play as pirates do it for the thrills rather than the rewards.

If you are reliant upon people dropping cargo for you then most wont, and if they explode then no cargo at all. (Plus, blowing them up isn't really what being a pirate in ED is about)

Take it upon yourself then to shoot the cargo hatch specifically (and it come spilling out) or try your hand at using hatch breakers. (By all accounts they are not so good but are supposed to be the pirates "go to" utility item - random YouTube hit about them)

Good luck.

People refuse to getting robbed? I'm shocked. What a sad world we live in where you can't even happly rob people all day. Do something Obama!

Cargo drones will make it better. 90% of the time they will choose to fight (and die) or combat log, or high jump.. the other 10% you will get them to drop. Do it all day and you're likely to get at least one motherload. The problem right now is when you do, it takes an hour+ to scoop all the stuff and basically ends your night with not that much profit.

Oh also expect to be on the recieving end of lots of moaning about how you are a social reject and big meanie -- suggest tuning that out for the most part ;)

You will generally have the best luck pirating along popular commodity trade routes, or CG's.. The rares routes kinda suck as it's mostly cobra's and combat loggers. but if you do the whole loop you can make some money off it.

The best ship to use, hands down is the clipper. It offers the best mix of speed, firepower and defense for piracy. Note that a pirate fit clipper is not the best ship for a standup fight, so if a competant bounty hunter shows up often the best thing to do is move on to your next desto rather than fight them - those who live to pirate another day, get rich. (slowly)

good luck. If you're looking for a clan, the Code is always recruiting experienced pilots. google 'the code elite dangerous' and you will find our website.

Now you know the <stuff> we have to put up with as pirates just to make life a little more interesting for Elite players...

I continued on pirating, the evening was more successful, it went like:

Asp: after ind he scan me, I scan him, we both have no cargo, he had no bounties, my bounty was only about 50K+++, I inform him that he is not interesting for me, he was wanting PvP, I warned him no quarter would be given if he fires on me, he did and it not end well for him.

2nd Asp I ind, and suddenly his python wingman appears as well, unexpected (he was not in wing when pulled), and it is obvious this asp is a combat asp not a rares runner. Anyhow I had 2 wingmen also (not for pirating, just because I watch the death match between them), they were at a station repairing after they duel their fdl to death, so I put 4Km distance to the asp and python and engage them in some pirate banter. I offer to let them go if they give me half of their cargo, I ask if they carry anything valuable, the python responds that he full of valuable cargo, I ask palladium? he says yes tons of the stuff, so I say I will turn and do a scan....python responds 'you know what will happen if you scan me', me thinks he is warning me thinking I am a bit of a noob, anyhow I notice one of my wingmen is now in SC, so I turn and head at the python. Wing man arrives on scene just as I get in weapons range on python, it was a slaughter, the asp and python were destroyed in 20 seconds (I not joke).

A python enters the system and after his shields are down and drives are shot out, he happily spills his 50 tons of consumer appliances. He went on his merry way, and I scoop as much as I can to deliver to the local Currys at the nearest station.

Orca next, these are like chickens teeth, he drops and I follow his wake, he spar with NIC, I wait until he concludes his business then ask him for his cargo, a short fight later and he is running, once his hull gets to 13% he spills his cargo. Left to go on his way, what goodies he has...many military plans, limpets, and some strange narcotics I had never heard of. I busy scoop as 3 fuzz try to stop my collection, 3 cells later I stuffed full of loot and visit the black market.

It is my observation is that, the more expensive ships, they are more co-operative when it comes to releasing them of cargo. From now on I will target pythons as much as I can. Too many asps fight to the death.

Amount earned in evening from piracy: 120K cr

+++ I was killed the night before last in a fdl duel with Hercules4 I start at 7m 30s, the battle is 6 minutes long..., it was agreed that my wingman would stay out of the battle. It was an epic fight, and finished off plasma blast right at the end, what a way to go.

Good on you for trying though, keep at it if you can afford it. Some people i hear are good sports about being pirated, as long as its done well.

Also if you watch the video, after my demise it mentions being accused of hacking, note it is not me that accuses, but the subsequent battle he did (with fdl and cobra)

Well, I just got interdicted by a player-pirate for the first time.

I had told myself that if it ever happened I'd just boost my way out and escape but when it actually did happen I was quite amused. "Yaaar!" said the pirate, and I chuckled back "Yaaar!" He asked me to ditch 20 of my cargo but I said I'd drop 30 because he'd put a smile on my face. We were both in Pythons and to be honest I could probably have fled without incident but where's the fun in that? I dropped the cargo, he said "Thanks" and I said "Fly safe" before leaving. All in all, I was chuckling and he'd made a bit of money. No great loss for me.

Next time though, **** the ****ing ******* **** he can **** right off or fight me for it :D

A great read and congratulations on yarr attempt :D +rep

I think as long as you not get killed, you can keep going. A 3.5M cr rebuy is lots of pirating, I suppose it is the targets you choose decides on likely hood of not getting killed.

Also I will not clear my wanted (it is standing at 35K cr now), so as time goes on I get more interesting to the various fdl, etc in the system.

Don't forget that each interdiction costs you money due to damage and tear and wear. After 3-4 interdictions in my Vulture, I have a 10k+ repair bill to pay.

For sure, there was one where it was successful ind, yet I lost 8% hull, wow, worse than battle.

Getting a big gunship stuck in your face should make most people reconsider their objections. Most people aren't afraid when they can just combat log.

Shooting the hatch or limpets aren't too useful compared to getting someone to drop cargo. You'll get a lot more, and it won't be scattered across 7km of space. Drones might make it better (if they have have good range), but until then better to ask and then kill instead of take a small amount of cargo.

Ha you should have seen it before the repair cost nerf. 3-4 interdictions would be 200k in my clipper.

Hatch breakers work very well. Especially with the more expensive controller
