Oh, don't worry. Whoever happens to get there first, you'll still be the first to work up the lunacy to actually even go for it.

And yes, I've noticed those. I've also noticed that the experience gained from my previous run on Sadge has proven absolutely invaluable.
Actually, scratch that. I barely made it out to 700 Ly when I dropped from Frame Shift. Shows what I learned about what to do when a star's gravity lines fail to show up.

Anyway, I've officially been underway since 12 May 3301 22:45:00 - in Open this time. From Galileo. With an actual screenshot of the starting time too. All is well.

Except that I'm currently in Aucoks.

Ahh, Aucoks. Just hearing the name makes me think I need to go refuel right this second.

I somehow managed to miss that area.

If it were a terrestrial road, the stretch of Aucoks would look something like this...

Alrighty ladies and gents, time for another Big Board Update!

Right off the bat, congratulations to CMDR Harbinger Els and his Asp Gentle Annie for finding their way to Sagittarius A*! Step forward to receive your star pip and... Wait a second. We don't have your mailing address on file, so you'll have to make due with this virtual bumper sticker for the moment, but PM me your addy and a real bumper sticker will find its way to your door! Toss a guestbook quote in as well. Harbinger was obviously left speechless by the sight of Sag A. ;) Congrats again, CMDR! o7

On the departure list we have another duel! CMDR Kyra Inari took off yesterday marking the inaugural run of the classic Sidewinder in Buckyball A*! Out of inspiration or his own insanity, and an obvious desire for a bumper sticker, CMDR Takaru Minari took wing in his own Sidewinder, the... uh... Undesided (rimshot) immediately afterward. It looks like while Kyra managed to avoid the Aucock sector, she is experiencing frequent Real Life Interdictions that might give Takaru the edge on time. Still, only Sadge knows who is going to win, and he's gonna make us wait and see!

Finally, we have a couple of new pilots on the pad. CMDR Darayavahush has made the bold proclamation that he is venturing to the center in the Faulcon DeLacy Viper Hutautha's Prophecy. A brave, but aborted attempt was made in a similarly ranged Fer-de-Lance. Darayavahush, if you pull this off, you will be a legend. Well, maybe not a legend but we will all think you're cool. And also on the pad, a guest from GalNet news is preparing to make the run. CMDR Kulzar, aka Galnet's roving correspondent Léonard Chamberlain will be strapping into the cockpit of his Hauler Scoop Express, following in the footsteps of fellow correspondent Ceska Zbrojovka. Think you got what it takes to top Ceska's time, Léonard? As with the Sidewinder duel above, only Sadge knows.

Good luck to everybody launched, ready to launch, or landing! Watch this space for coming attractions...

I'm keeping my eye on you, Kulzar!

Radio Sidewinder will NOT go down to the likes of GNN.

Counting the days until my long weekend when I'm planning to make my run.

Unless it looks likely to rain all day Saturday again. If it does, I might do it then.

I'm actually llooking forward to this. I must be insane :p

Oh, it's on! Although I don't think I can beat your time in a hauler, it's totally on!

Oh this has all the makings of a classic grudge match. GNN vs Radio Sidewinder. Not that we at the Buckyball run would ever stoop to immature sensationalism... but what'd you call his mom?

(left intentionally vague for maximum effect)

On another note, I had the pleasure of running into CMDR Passionfruit on the last leg of his trip home, on comms during his triumphant touchdown of the '85 edition Cobra ?SYNTAX ERROR in civilized space. The goal was to wing up, but because we were on opposite sides of this big sphere called Earth ED's instancing kept us from seeing one another. The important thing is that a Buckyballer has made it home after a long, arduous journey, and the Shotgun Shine is open for business, serving food and drinks to celebrate his triumphant return!

And seeing as how CMDR Henry Passionfruit divulged that his first page of cartographic data alone netted him ONE MILLION CREDITS, it looks like Henry is buying. Cheers, mate! :D (And seriously, welcome back! Bucky salutes you! o7)

Right, it is on, very much like Donkey Kong!

Name: Alec Turner
Pilot: Sam Lowry
Ship name: The Wedding Anniversary
Ship type: Asp

Date of departure: Thurday 28th May 3301

"If you've lost your faith in love and music oh the end won't be long, because if it's gone for you then I too may lose it and that would be wrong"

P.S. that's my start quote, not my finish quote ;)

Good job too, I'm not sure EZ could make the text small enough for that! ;)

I am away from the galactic business for a couple of day's due to some earth-like duties, and I come back to find... Cmdr Alot??! Jupiters balls, what did happen here? I mean, Kligg had a great time, but that... is just unbelievable!

Please, in the name of science (sitting ready with pen, paper, a timetable, route planner and a stellar map of scoopable stars) please tell us what shortcuts you took! Did you use a diaper, or drill a hole in the CMDR chair? Did you have some sort of assisting co-pilot feeding you with food and drink? Did you somehow squeeze in the legendary 8A fuel scoop? Have you found a shortcut in witch-space travel? Or perhaps more concerning these days; Did Thargoids help you?

Congratulations Alot. I salute you!

Very kind words, thank you :)

No co-pilot I'm afraid, she was out shopping for most of the day (entirely unrelated to my choice of day to attempt it on, of course :D)
No 8A fuel scoop either, not even a 7A - I just about managed to afford the 7B by selling my Vulture.

I reckon my best tips, in order:
1. Avoid the Aucoks sector entirely by going straight over the top of them (FoxTwo told us about this weeks ago, and I managed to entirely miss it!)
2. Make sure you've got the route planning trickery down (which is kinda difficult once you've gone home...); it's almost worth heading halfway out and doing tests ahead of time to figure out what works for your jump range - I think your Anaconda loadout was pretty similar to mine, I can share my numbers if you like!
3. Don't be afraid to restart your client - for me it didn't help a jot with route planning, but it did help with overall game performance.
4. The Sandwich Method:
If you're finding that your witchspace transitions are taking a long time, simply start trying to eat a sandwich between jumps. For the entire duration you are taking a bite every jump, the game will account for this and make the transition as quick as possible, resulting in the pilot scrambling to not fly into a star and/or throw ham, cheese and bread across the floor. Bear in mind that as soon as you have finished the sandwich, the transitions will resume taking about 45 seconds. I hereby recommend being in a permanent state of sandwich-eating for all future runs. Effect of other foods is unknown; attempt with caution.

Oh, and just on the off-chance... You don't happen to have any video footage of BBR7 do you? :p
(Same still goes for anyone else - there are a few slots left, give me a shout if you have any footage from previous Buckyballs and are happy for it to be used in a BBR video!)

"This is Cmdr Mad-Max to anyone out there..."
...
"Have had trouble with my route planner since leaving Galileo at 9:09:09 today"
...
"It seems to have a fondness of unscoopables to the extent of seeking them out, even in clusters of FOG-KBAM"

"But I will wrestle that crappy piece of machinery into submission. The journey continues! Mad-Max out."

Well, I've managed to make it halfway in my trusty little Sidewinder - I'm now closer to Sadge than I am to Sol. Just took 11 hours and 24 minutes.

And that was the easy half.
