Hey Guys - good luck to Kulzar and Symbiont on starting your runs!! May you miss the Aucoks! :)

I'm still pottering around on my way back in the complete middle of nowhere. Gazillions of Neutron stars around which are great for "scan and move on" credits. I virtually never bother with their system planets.... until for some unknown reason I had a hunch with this little system just now:

Two things to take awy from this:
1: Maybe I'm still a noob (playing since beta), but I didn't know water worlds looked like that on the system map.
2: go with you hunches :D

Happy exploring buckeyballers :)

Good luck, Kulzar, Symbiont! Don't talk to any strangers. And even if you miss Aucoks, watch out for Thaelia. Thalia's a b-- beautiful example of a sector you want to avoid.

Yea, you'd think that'd give me an advantage, since Inari is a messenger god and all.

Aww jeez... Gods? Starships? Center of the Galaxy? First FoxTwo and now you. PEOPLE. This is a Star Trek V free zone. Don't make me come out there.

I don't have to listen to you, your not my real dad!

Also, I can't be held responsible for anything any other foxes do.

I was just telling a friend yesterday that ST5 was hands down the worst movie I've ever seen. Not the worst Star Trek movie. Not the worst sci-fi movie. The worst. movie. Ever!

Yes, worse than Highlander 2.

So yeah, no Shatner ego trips here, please. :p

@ TunaMage
Well it's not like anyone, who has atleast basic knowledge of stars, would want to terraform and live close to a neutron star!
Afterall they can basically melt yer everything, if ya get too close... Still, nice find :p

Does Highlander 2 even count as a scifi movie? There's so much bull in it...

Highlander 2 *winces as his inner voice screams, "There can be only one!" in fury over his having even mentioned it* is an abomination, is what it is.

Star Trek V was worse. I am a Star Trek fan, and I can say that.

You know, talking about ST V remindes me. I was looking up Voyager's route home (Thinking about retracing it after I can get myself a 'conda) and noticed they went around the core when it would have been faster for them to go through it. Then I remembered that alien/god/thing from V...

I think I avoided Aucoks completely, woot! Thanks to Anuranium for the higher galactic latitude trick.

Also, I just broke the 20 000 light-years barrier! First psychological victory! :D

I decided to take the scenic route back from the core and went via the Great Annihilator.

Took some pictures for you ElectricZ!

I'm still 20kly from Sol having been farming neutrons on the way back. Found a few Earth-likes orbiting neutrons too! Nice for a visit but not sure I'd want to live there.

On my way home from my Buckyball Run A* and I've come across a few of these weird-ass gas giants, WITH WATER BASED LIFE?! Anyone one else thinking dolphin aliens?

Also, I suspect Thargaloids might end up coming from planets like these gas giants with ammonia based life. Thoughts?

For you guys that are flying the smaller ships (eagle, vipers etc), Jump Range is a big issue especially when crossing the spiral arms.

How I did it in my Cobra was to go UP the galactic plane (or "down" works too) about 100 LY or so... you'll completely bypass the Aucoks sector of brown dwarves and will have a much easier time crossing the arms with a 20-LY or less jump range.

Being away from the central galactic plane where "everyone else is" also helps the Galaxy Map plot routes quicker - there are less stars to worry about, and less need to "optimise" your route at 99%. When I did my run I have never had a route plot for longer than 15 to 20 seconds. Never. In fact, nearer to the Galactic core (1500 LY), the lowest distance I'd needed to plot was 300 LY to get a reasonable time (less than 30 seconds). After that, my final 600 or 400 LY plot was an instant-plot direct to Sag A*.

So I've never encountered what some have reported here - 15 minute plots, single 20 LY jumps, manual jumping etc... I never needed to do any of these.

Just putting it out there in case someone actually reads this :D
Anyone following FoxTwo's excellent advice may be better doing exactly what he did and flying above the plane. I headed to Sadge at -500 and still hit the navigation problems that others had. On the way back I've traveled at about 800 below the plane - thanks to CMDR Kligg pointing me in the direction of loads of black holes to scan, and I still needed to use Esvandiary's multiplier trick to make plots.

(EDIT: Aucoks was okay at -500 though, my only brown dwarf problems were the first four jumps out of Sol - I really wondered whether to just give in immediately!)

I for one am reading this avidly. My biggest concern (aside from deep vein thrombosis) for my run is this route plotting issue, particularly as my PC is pretty ancient and not fast at the best of times! These tips are golden as far as I'm concerned. Re: outfitting my Asp, I know a lot has been written but my basic plan is to take AFMUs, Heat sinks, Advanced discovery scanner, Detailed surface scanner (for a leisurely return journey) but otherwise aim for the absolute maximum jump range I can get. Does that sound about right?

P.S. My personal goal is to do it in under 15 hrs.
Using the multiplier trick, I've experimented and found that my laptop (i5, so equivalent to an i3 desktop) plots 900+LY routes in 4-5 seconds compared to 2-3 on my desktop. Also when things aren't working (stuck on 98%) none of the processor cores are maxed out, so it's just a case of finding your magic number for plots - once you do that you'll get fast plots whatever your pc spec.

Yep. in my flight test, I went 1000 ly in 28 minutes.

If I could sustain that pace, I'd be looking at something like 12 hours 20 minutes. But I don't expect I can, with the need for occasional breaks, eating at some point, replots, and route planner issues.

Allowing the loss of two hours for those things gives me a reasonable target i think.

Also, that flight test did include undocking time, which won't be a factor after the first leg.
In my speed-run test travelling back last night I did two legs - one 2916 LY in 1h7min and then (falling asleep by the end) one 2972 LY in 1h15min. So in theory I could make my second run in 10 hours, but I know from my first run that I'll be taking a few breaks, and that replots, etc hit your time more than you expect. I'll still be delighted to get there in 12 hours next time, although I'm hoping to get a lucky run where there's no problems and get there in less than 11 hours.
