eriger777 exported the ship models see the reddit post. Is this allowed or what?

Edit: links removed, because it's not allowed according to the EULA.

If Frontier was to provide a method to download the ships I am sure it would allow people with 3D editing and animation knowledge to create some really nice videos, because rather than needing to create a scene in game they could just make it 3D animation software and would not need to mess around with the in-game camera. It would also provide a means for people to get 3D printed ship models to place around their desktop <- though for they could do this without even providing the 3D models.

Extracting 3D Models from Elite Dangerous, is this allowed?

Just want to bring to attention that eriger777 managed to extract the 3D ship models from the game. See this reddit post.

It's definitely in breach of the EULA and probably basic copyright, but it does depend on how you use the data too. If you 3D print a Sidewinder and put it on your desk, or make a spinning Cobra screensaver, proof of illegal action and pursuing it would be impossible. However if you sold those models on eBay, you'd be at risk of legal action.

Looks as though it's just the meshes, and not the skins that are captured. For now...?

Some serious grey area, if they don't try and market it nothing will probably come of it, but I can't say that for sure.

This already happened a couple times in the last year, in regards to paper modeling; can't find the links to save my life though. Dude pulled out the Sidey and Cobra iirc, and even did a rescale of the Sidey to match it up with the Cobra.

He didnt even mask his name on the login screen via the launcher. I suspect he will have his account terminated or suspended...

Don't see any problem with it if it's for personal use, how does it pose any problem for FD?

It would be pretty cool if it has the UV mapping co-ords in that export, then we could create our own skins for fun (though they wouldn't go back into the game, which is GOOD, because FD make cash off skins)

Would be really cool to be able to have people showing off their texturing ideas for skins.

It's not like he's profiteering is it? I mean, what harm can he do?

OK, if he suddenly produces his own space sim called L33T: Perilous with suspiciously similar ship models then yeah, stone him.
Right now ... no really a big issue is it?

I think a precedent has to be set here on the one hand he is using Copyrighted material without permission (if I was him I would ask permission before using anything), on the other hand if FDEV goes too far overboard on this they could drive all this sort of thing underground.

When I was creating Elite:Multiplayer I asked permission from both parties involved in its creation also when using the Elite models in Star Flight 2000 I also asked permission before using them, a big legal challenge is not good for the bank balance.
