OK so the past few days saw three, and hopefully four, ships complete the trip to Sagittarius A*! First off is CMDR Kulzar, our friendly GalNet correspondent Léonard Chamberlain who streaked into Sadge in the Hauler Scoop Expresswith a time of 17 hours, 42 minutes and 6 seconds. Scoop Express lived up to her name, setting a new record Hauler time from Sol to Sag A*, while simultaneously tweaking Radio Sidewinder correspondent Ceska Zbrojovka's nose as he shot by. Congrats, Léonard!

Nice one Kulzar ! I knew the Hauler could run it quicker than my first attempt :)

So I reckon the Hauler, as usual, is a bit of a dark horse... Nice and cheap too!
I actually think the right Hauler could make it to 4th place on the board as it stands. :)

I was just looking at the other end of the scale at the worst ships to consider doing this in... And I think Henry Passionfruit is right, the Orca is just the winner... Second place is the Fed Dropship, which I suspect might be the last ship anyone chooses to take to A* ... or anywhere else, for that matter. :D

So how long until someone tries it in an Orca? ;3

For the next Buckyball Run, there probably needs to be a side "competition" keeping track of number and value of insurance claims during the race. I think Rankaze may have "won" on that count for BBR7 :D

EDIT: ...though that may just mean that he's admitted to more crashes than others! :)

Likely, since that wasn't nearly all of them. After I pulled the shields off the Viper I crashed it a bunch more times. But the crashes all looked too similar for me to put them all in.

I think I lost 17 ships in BBR7, most of them Vipers.

I think CMDR Passionfruit himself said he was planning to do that... At some point... :p

I wonder if he's regretting it yet :D

I also considered to go with the Dropship before. Just for being the first one who did this. But this is stupid, there is no reason to make the trip in Orcas or Dropships tbh

Very good :). My particular favourites are the Viper bounce onto the launching pad (at about 02:00, that approach starts about 01:30), and the Eagle faceplant into the station wall at about 06:00. I've said before that these stations put their walls in the most inconvenient places :D.

Heheh, the bounce onto the landing pad was particularly fun, because I was completely shocked that it actually took. I was expecting to have to bounce a couple of more times. :p

LOL, excellent skills there chaps and the shonky editing just added to the enjoyment value :D

I jest, that was brilliant!

Thank you.

Excellent. I already saw them without the text commentary, but that definitely adds something. :D

I was kinda hoping that he'd fly literally into the "WELCOME" sign, rather than right next to it. :D

Thank you. I had fun with the commentary. I wanted to make a gymnastics scoring joke on the Viper bounce, too, but I decided I couldn't do it without looking like I was insulting someone's country.

And I'm pretty sure I hit that sign one or two times along the way.

The Viper would be pretty awful, too. And the FDL.

Oh, the Orca wouldn't be too bad. Really. All you'd need would be 1335 jumps at the absolute minimum with a 19.41 Ly Empty Jump Range.
Assuming you're fine with a 2D Power Plant, no scanning equipment, a deactivated Power Distributor and Cargo Hatch just to make power ends meet.
And only carrying the exact amount of fuel for each jump, meaning rescooping at every stop for this same amount of fuel (without burning up - remember that 2D Plant?).
And assuming you could somehow fly in a perfectly straight line toward Sadge and didn't waste a single light second meandering.
Or chicken out with a 2A Power Plant and take a hit of 0.01 Ly - and thus requiring a staggering one additional jump, i.e. 1336.
Or go for broke with 2A and scanning equipment if you're fine with needing at least 1342 jumps.

Okay, who am I kidding, the Orca is terrible and is thus the ultimate ship to take to Sadge in order to get all the bragging rights.
It took me about 21 hours of straight flying if I discount the small breaks I took in a Sidewinder and even I don't want to do it in an Orca.
Okay, I lied. I want to, but I don't have those 80+ MCr needed.

Wait... you can get 19.41 LY jump range in an Orca?

When I stripped down the Colonel Gadsden for BBR7, even with undersized components I couldn't make 19 LY. So the Viper is actually worse...

Mine's set up with a 4t fuel tank. I think you could probably go quicker faster further with a 2t one so long as you plot away from Aucocks. I wonder has The Scoop Express got a small tank ?

Au contraire! :p

I'm afraid there's one thing you're forgetting about the Orca...
As I understand it, you can't replace the class 6 internal compartment... So you'll be stuck with a class 5 fuel scoop, which means that scoop time will be going up a bit :D

And hang on a minute, how did you get 19.41? This is the best I can do (+/- 0.01Ly for the power plant...)
Oh, I suppose 19.31 if you're willing to take the 8T tank, but that means rerouting every single time you hit an unscoopable

EDIT: I can't read, and neither can Rankaze. :D 19.41 empty jump range... (which admittedly seems like quite a silly metric to use :p)

Yes. Yes you can. But only on absolute minimum fuel.

And yes, empty jump range is a silly metric - but I just wanted to see what would be the absolute bare minimum amount of jumps you'd need to make with an Orca: 1335.
Realistically, you'd obviously not want to be flying around suns with a 2D Power Plant and you'd have to make a few more jumps to account for unscoopables and the general meandering that occurs on such routes as you can't make a perfect beeline for Sadge.
So going with Full Fuel Tank Ranges, 18.97 Ly (with scanners) or 19.07 Ly (without scanners) would be a bit more likely. Which, in turn, makes for 1366 or 1359 jumps at minimum respectively.
Looking back at my original Asp run for which I logged the exact distance jumped, a realistic assumption (including 'wasted' jumps due to meandering) would be that the Orca thusly equipped would require 1374 or 1367 jumps respectively (or 1366 with no scanners and 2D Power Plant).
In other words? Taking an Orca to Sadge would take over 23 hours of non-stop flying.

I'm afraid there's one thing you're forgetting about the Orca...

Well...
...guess that just makes the Orca about 20 MCr cheaper to take to Sadge!

Are you really suggesting that this is measurably better?

Also, if you fall into realspace with 2A thrusters for any reason... you're gonna have a bad time.

Also... can you even make two max-distance jumps with a two ton fuel tank in a Viper? I'm not sure you can.
