Ok, I'm comin in and switching to Solo. The shame...

700ly from Sol and 900 from my home planet where I'm headed to cash in on four weeks of very profitable exploring - and I'm going against everything I stand for switching to Solo. Just can't bear to be blown to bits 30ly from home by bored teenagers...

Is that wrong? I am an Open play advocate - but just look at me being all cowardly. If I had any semblance of a ship that could stand a chance of getting away then I probably wouldn't, but my ASP is tuned for exploring and would probably crumple if I hit a fly. I certainly couldn't get away from it that's for sure...

The option is there for you to take.

No issues with the choice you have made, call it a kind of insurance?

Arry.

Nah, I just did the same thing 10 minutes ago, 16 jumps from Alioth.
We only take the opportunities available to us to secure our invested time, preventing a possible ragequit and a headbutt into the keyboard or worse... ;)

No shame as far as I see. I primarily play in solo in the fact as far as I'm concerned I play the game how I want.
If I had some kick-ass ship that would 'own' any bored kids fancying their chances then maybe I'd play open but long range exploring and the ship one uses is specific to that role... And not really fit for putting up against a fighter type craft..(and somebody with quicker reflexes and more spare time!)
Welcome home commander!

Fully agree with what has been posted before.
Never got the whole solo = cowardice tangent.

The clever man knows when to take risks and when to avoid them. So why do you want to call yourself a coward instead of clever?

If you can't get armed friends to bring you in or something, then I would not say it's wrong. The fact is, the risk/reward for explorers is just so high when returning home. Its not well balanced, I certainly don't fault you for making sure your last four weeks arent wasted, that's too much time to just throw away because someone is having a bad day.

This. We should make a Explorer return wing. Once a week at certain time/place meet and help explorers return data? -> It may just make us one big target though :p

I got creamed last night by an Elite, Cobra Mk III, NPC. Not sure what he was packing but my shields were ripped to shreds in seconds.

Going solo wouldn't have saved me.

Check out the discussion in the Explorers Gutwrenched Tavern thread.

Coordinating to bring people in once a week will be problematic and will make for a very large target, coming on the forums, letting the explorers forum know you're arriving and then coordinating in PM with a few escorts will be smoother I think.

A player group or dedicated thread would be beneficial to this maybe.

Move swiftly enough and the only worry you'll have is the supercruise home in the final system(s)... I definitely go solo when returning, though. With my planned expo leaving me out in the field for at least 10k+ system scans, I don't feel like losing that large a chunk of my life to some scum.

Play the game your way! For you to be ashamed of whatever you choose to do, you're granting much more importance to other peoples' opinions than your own enjoyment.

I've done a dozen in/out runs in exploration ships and never even seen any CMDRs. The trick is not to hang out in the super busy systems and make long fast jumps.

It's pretty nerve wracking that's for sure. The only thing my ASP has is massive jump and massive fuel tanks. I have virtually no thrusters. If I'm 'pulled over' I'm screwed...

good game play would be you calling for assistance from some friends to guide you into safety.
it is a multi player you know..

I feel exactly the same as the OP.
I always play in Open and it would feel like I'm personally letting myself down to "cop out" and come in solo.

THAT SAID... if you've got a few friends to call upon, you can arrange them to meet up with you a few hundred ly out and wing up with you to escort you back for a small payment of palladium each.

I would also recommend stopping at the first inhabited system with a starport and crank up your shielding and hull reinforcement to maximum before heading further into civilised space.

as Merthin was lamenting, CMDRS are only one of the risks of coming home and to me one of the least concerning. Anyone looking for a bounty generally wont find one, anyone looking to pirate will see an ASP full of heatsinks and scanners and know its not worth the effort, there are some but few players who will pop you just to ruin your day. However those elite anacondas/cobras/whatevers will fill you full of holes based on an AI routine with no reason to do so. The escort is just an added measure of security against these random unreasonable threats.

I know there are several CMDRs who are in bubble right now waiting for 1.3 and I know Id fly my vulture for the cause if I was in bubble and someone was coming home.

A multiplayer with a solo option... for a reason.
Just because the multiplayer options are there does not mean that ignoring them in favor of solo is some kind of black mark. To each their own.

One other thing: it's not bad if you are allied with a system; for your final run-in try to go someplace heavily policed and allied. Better still, someplace that requires a permit. I usually scoot-and-boot straight in to Facece because that way any griefers that aren't Imperial Counts can't even be in there. ;) It's heavily policed, too, and there are guard-ships everywhere.

Edit: Before I hit on my current strategy I'd fly in to the edge of human space and sell my exploration scanner and some stuff and replace them with shields and upgrade my thrusters, repair, refuel, and then blaze in as fast as I could. There's not much that can catch a terrified Asp. Whatever you do, don't stop to fight. Submit to the interdiction, boost and boost and boot.

It's not something I would do. That's why I'm exploring in a Cobra and not an Asp, or an Adder, or any of the other ships I'd quite like to explore with.

Which says something, really. The mere presence of CMDR scum is ensuring that I won't fly half the ships in the game. :( I've a strong suspicion two wrongs make a right in this case, so go ahead and switch; a roleplaying explorer's enjoyment of the game is worth more than a pew-pew eejit's.
