Ok, I'm comin in and switching to Solo. The shame...

For the record I am 100% going to be coming in on solo when I come back in. I think it'd be fun to form a wing or two and get an escort, but I've never flown IN a wing and would be terrified I'd ram someone with this tissue thin hull of mine.

Going SOLO is an available option and legitimate game-play; in exactly the same way that "Mindless killing just for LULZ" is apparently legitimate game-play. Why differentiate between the two?

As I stated earlier Dan, I got wasted by an NPC. SOLO wouldn't help you there. You WILL be safer in OPEN running with friendlies as backup.

wouldnt it be more legit to comm them and tell them that youll "escort" them to a station that will give your faction influence instead? I can see that being a thing.

Yeah that would be ok...But it wouldn't happen. You know the blockaders would prefer to destroy you. Best to get the returns for your exploring in Solo.

Im just saying if the blockaders are smart they would say: "you're in an unarmed ASP with an ADS and a DSS, that means you've got exploration data, if you try to enter this opposing station with it you'll be destroyed, if you try to run, youll be destroyed, or we can offer you safe passage to one of OUR stations and you can get home safe and make your money, your choice.

I certainly know what *I* would do in that situation, and its a logical way to get tangible reward from an explorer, I would be more than ok with this. Well, no Id be slightly miffed someone was forcing me to sell my data somewhere but it beats a mad-dog killing for no reason.

My 2 cents is that i do the same. After i've switched to open it always feel bad to go back to solo, but when i'm returning from exploration i do it. It's not the money, not even the tagging. It's all the data, all the effort, too much.
When i trade i don't care, when i fight even less, but loosing that would make a too bad night for me.

Is that wrong? I am an Open play advocate - but just look at me being all cowardly. If I had any semblance of a ship that could stand a chance of getting away then I probably wouldn't, but my ASP is tuned for exploring and would probably crumple if I hit a fly. I certainly couldn't get away from it that's for sure...

I think it would be worse to not jump into solo when you wanted to, and die due to some triggerhappy buttmonkey putting a beam through your ludicrously exposed power plant minutes before you docked.

Be kind to your blood pressure. It's your game, play in whichever mode you like. As you come closer to inhabited space, you're more likely to join instances running elsewhere.. given how flaky the servers have been this weekend, it's an additional risk that you may not savour.

Fingers crossed that you get in safely and sell all that data without anything breaking!

Edit: Oh, seems you got home with it ages ago. Fantastic, enjoy :)

I agree with this 100%, like I said Id almost rather someone be able to steal my data and at least get it to civilization even if it means I make nothing on it. Just losing all that work feels like such a waste.

When I am heading out on an exploring trip I park my clipper at the edge of human space, at a certain outpost where I also park my Asp, the Longshot. I make my run-in to there, hop in my Clipper, and hot-foot in to where I sell my results (usually Facece) Longshot is always waiting for me in mothballs for when I'm ready to venture back out into the deep black. (Edit: Right now I'm using Longshot to haul Diso corn and a few merchant CG. Because she's a good blockade runner. 160ly? Pffff...)

Not all of us are imperial barons with an embarrassment of riches, a ship fridge full of foie gras and champagne with a spare clipper to be our grocery getter. :p

700ly from Sol and 900 from my home planet where I'm headed to cash in on four weeks of very profitable exploring - and I'm going against everything I stand for switching to Solo. Just can't bear to be blown to bits 30ly from home by bored teenagers...

i'm doing the same thing on my way back from sag a. i even have chaff, point defense, and a couple lasers, but still, the additional safety is too tempting. it feels dirty, but losing all that data would feel worse.

Cracking idea. I've just tooled up with an A class Vulture now for the hell of it (with my exploration winnings) and I might just do the very same thing.

BTW that Vulture thing is evil... Pure evil...
