Ok, I'm comin in and switching to Solo. The shame...

I don't understand people concerns here over human players. Unless it's to a community goal, how will others know to kill you?

One thing I will say about being away for so long, it's odd seeing systems that have been previously discovered...

;)

That's always my first warning sign that I am no longer safe.

You seem to be under the impression that some CMDR's require a reason to kill you beyond sadism.

Many commanders will look at your loadout, realize you're an explorer and even if hostile, simply go find a juicier target.
There are however some CMDR's who will look at your loadout, realize you're an explorer and see that it makes you an easy target and shoot you up for the hell of it.

Glad to hear you made it in safe CMDR, while you're in bubble you might post in the escort thread if you're going to be sticking around the loony-bin for much longer.

Will do Murishani. Planning on using some of this cash to tool up a bit and work on the combat stats for a while, so I'll be around.

As a big open advocate I'd say switch to solo if you're bringing home exploration data. Whilst it might be part of the game to get shot up randomly there's no reward for killing explorers and has the chance to ruin months of play time for someone.

Don't be like the cmdr who posted that he came back from a long trip and tried to turn in his data at Lave . . .

Going SOLO is an available option and legitimate game-play; in exactly the same way that "Mindless killing just for LULZ" is apparently legitimate game-play. Why differentiate between the two?
This, +rep, Im not sure why people are under the impression that mindless killing is legitimate but going solo to avoid it isn't.

Honestly I think if they could steal our black box of data I might be MORE inclined to be ok with getting shot up for it. It's the fact that there is no reward, there is no reason. All the work I did will never mean anything to anyone in any way. I'd honestly rather have some lucky and psychopathic player reap my rewards than have it just not matter at all. There's no reason to kill an explorer and it just makes it feel all the more empty and pointless.

Nice one :) 10 Mcr cartography. Did you sell it anywhere nice to get faction up or a permit; or was it first safe pad with a Cartography Office? :)

Still cashing in. 17m and rising! :D

Selling at the first outpost I found. I have no allegiance to anyone. Lol!

Ooh it does appear I've just jumped from Pathfinder to Ranger though! Yeehaa!

My take on this is that it's not entirely up to the devs to decide what is and isn't cheating in an online, multiplayer game; there is an element of etiquette that's up to the players. There has to be, no getting around it; it's a shared community (and a very big one at that) where the software is the means of interaction, not the be-all and end-all.

Anyway, congrats hoppingdeth. :)

congrats! welcome to the ranger corp, its a long way to the next rank up especially if youre like me and dont want to farm neutrons.
Thanks!

What are the current requirements to jump explorer ranks? Seems a bit vague online.

it is a bit vague. The forum says 30 million but I guarantee thats wrong, the wiki says something like 52 million which seems in the right neighborhood, both say you only rank up from credits earned from selling data, but Ive also heard you get rank for total systems visited, so I don't know.

There's a big difference: in one case you're affecting other players, and in the other you're not. Way to moral calculus.

I think Dan is saying 'if you consider mindless killing for no reason to be legitimate gameplay because its what someone wants to do, then going solo is just as legitimate for the exact same reason.'
Technically were ALL effecting other players whether we play solo or open. All those systems you just sold are now discovered by you permanently for everyone, whether you sold them in open, or solo mode. So were all effecting others to some degree.

Just a thought.

The only legitimate reason to kill an explorer is if they were going to turn in data at a station that would influence a faction that you were working against. There's no way in game to spot such a player under the current mechanics though.

wouldnt it be more legit to comm them and tell them that youll "escort" them to a station that will give your faction influence instead? I can see that being a thing.
