Legal Name Change

No , just NO , if someone has earnt a 'reputation' in game with other players...they shouldn't be able to escape that by paying to change their name in-game.

I'm looking at you specifically Mr "kill explorer at SagA" , you know who you are and lots of others now do too...*scratches itchy trigger finger*

you do realize he could just wipe his save and get a new name, or do as I was suggesting (albiet a bit more cash) and just buy another copy of the game and get a new name? I honestly don't see this as a valid argument.

Can't speak for him, but I realize that and am fine with it. Wiping save or getting a new account would put a player back to 100cr and a starter ship. That's cost so high that most players wouldn't consider using it to escape a bad reputation.
Unfortunately it's also way to high for players like you, that just want a name they think sounds better. If only there was a way to name change while keeping (real) reputation.

How? Serious question.
Is the name of a CMDR something important? If the name change doesn't clear any bounties there shouldn't be any negative consequences. Guess I'm missing something.

Missing something like Players using it to hide from the Players they ganked or smacktalked the night before you mean.

Your Cmdr name is your in-game identity.

Agreed, I would not want to have to restart, though as people are suggesting there are definite work arounds for keeping players up to date on who changed to who, maybe make it part of a 1x week commander name change news article on galnet? should be a fairly simple copy/paste from the name change command line.

I don't know that tracking name changes would be that hard.
Early on I decided I didn't like the original name I had taken. I told my frien that I was going to wipe my save and start again, so I'd tell him what my new commander name was once I was back ingame. Turns out I didn't have to. My name automatically updated in his friends list to my current name.
If they can do that with a friends list, surely the same thing happens with whatever they want to call the 'ignore' list of players you don't want to see again?

… Players and their pilots are 'identities' and part of their legend. It's open to abuse in the way mentioned above. …

You're right, it isn't really abuse as such, but it IS avoiding consequences. And right now it's one of the few consequences we really have.

Thanks for the explanation and the examples. Never thought about such things as names are usually very unimportant for me in games, but I understand that they are important for others.

Yes, exactly that's the thing I missed. It didn't come to my mind that players would want to seek those who killed them for revenge and that players would change their name to hide from that revenge. It's simply not something I think about (revenge, getting in/famous …). Thank you for your answer.

It really was a serious and honest question about something I wasn't aware of.

Eve doesn't allow name changes for the same reason ED doesn't and shouldn't.

It's not about bounties (they could be carried across), it's about your in-game actions and not being able to hide from them by changing your name.

If you simply chose the wrong name (like Cmdr Commander xxxxx). Tough.

Every account should have a one-time use name change... The first time you login you are greeted by having to peck around and find a name that isn't already taken. Finally you give up and just go for something stupid... and it works! So you take that name. Three months later you are seriously into the game and hate running around as "CMDR CuddlyEwok" or something and want to be taken more seriously.

Escalating tariff.

1st time £5 (everyone can make mistakes)
2nd time £20 (think a lot harder about your cmdr name this time)
3rd time £100 (there is a pattern here, you deserve to pay)
4th time £1000 and a pint of your blood for medical research (you are A. A total fool or B. Far too wealthy)

I'm serious ;)

Edit: too not to

You can already change your name in Elite though... you just have to reset your account.

I would like to put forward the idea of having the ability to change your commander's name. I have 2 ideas on this.

1. At capital systems (Sol, Archenar, ect.) have an office at the station where for a certain number of credits you can legally change your name.

or

2. FD sells a 1x use name change on the cash store.

I would be perfectly happy with either, curious as to what you all think.

What brought this idea on, is that as I played more and more I got into the whole RP aspect, and now as I formed my ig character I would like to make it Commander William Obtuse instead of just Obtuse.

It's a minor use case, could cause continuity issues so wouldn't be simple I suspect.

I'd rather have more content or even better, more than one save per account (is still on FD's road map I hope).

I haven't seen it mentioned officially in months, and now that people are actively buying second and even third accounts at £40 a pop to facilitate different play styles or allow family members to have their own character, why would FD even entertain it? I'm proceeding under the assumption that this feature is dead and buried, along with Ironman mode. I'll be happy to be proven wrong on either, but as with many of FD's DDF-era plans I'm not holding my breath.
