Warning: Violence at Sag A*

A friend has reported on Facebook that on reaching Sag A*, he was destroyed by a player without warning. He lost 6 weeks of data.

This makes me very sad, because the very rare encounters with other players have been some of the best moments of exploration for me... and I can't quite understand why anybody would go to the effort of all that travel just to shoot at innocents... but I'm not wanting to open yet another "some people are jerks" thread, just to warn people: Don't explore in Open. :-(

Yeah its pretty sad, but its Elite Dangerous.

We should make a team, go there, and shoot down the . Did your friend get the commander's name?

I hope one day Frontier to give us shared reputations so we could share information about murderers and hunt them down... Maybe even create our own missions.

Explorers best friend Mobius. You get player interaction out in the deep plus high res screens shots. Don't risk your data if you don't have to.

Why?

Because they can, because this is the type of gameplay the the Devs actively encourage. It's a no-holds-barred universe out there. There are no consequences for abhorrent behaviour so why not?

Explorers best friend Mobius.

LOL this is happening in Mobius as well.

Why not?

Because when someone else arrives set up for battle, and you self-destruct because of it, you'll get your fame allright, or at least infamy :D

Maybe it´s time to change the common exploration loadout up to carrying weapons and shield. The speculations about an apperance of the Thargoids and the new Diamondback, which was announced as a combat explorer, pointing in this direction too. However, watch youe back, there are bad guys out there!

Sag A is a hotspot right now because of Buckyball Run, must be loads of CMDR's there who have taken weapons and are a bit bored. If I was the piratey type it sure would be tempting to kill off a few unsuspecting explorers just for kicks. It not against any rules of the game and you know what people can be like. So all we can do is warn fellow explorers to tool up if in Sag A in open or you could lose data, or only visit the area in closed for the time being. Eventually LCD interest in Sag A will die off and it will be safe again to visit.

6 weeks worth of data, Ouch!

Sorry to hear of his loss.

Why? - Because they can and some if not all are after the glory of reading it on the forums.

As others have said, it's part of the game and they've done nothing wrong as such, although I don't really agree with people heading off out and doing it. Especially when most who head off don't go armed due to wanting to keep their jump distance up. Who knows, possibly the Diamond Back will change this and allow for Explorers to head of out armed without having to reduce jump distances as much?

Unfortunately, I feel that it's going to happen more and more now that the trend has been set, especially around Sag A*.

If I was to head of to Sag A*, or any well known tourist destination where there is a chance of this happening I'd do it in either Solo or Private Group, although it appears even Private Groups are experiencing the same things, all be it less frequently.

Some people find their own goals and reason for playing Elite: Dangerous, and this just happened to be his, can't really hold it against him. Doesn't make him any less of a total chumpus though, so no one need to like it one bit. If he didn't off himself already I'd say we gather up a posse and flush him out and anyone else who tries the same ever again. If it's any comfort I think he's going to have it pretty rough, at least for a while. He rustled a lot of jimmies so he has probably put himself on a lot of people's KOS lists.

There's "Dangerous" and then there's "Just wanting to hurt and harm other people"
These kind of people belong in the later, especially since as it is in most games, you can not punish them in any meaningful way but they can harm other players significantly more then they ever will be harmed.

As far as the suggestion for deep space explorers to tool up, there is an inherent problem here in that the whole focus of explorer ship outfitting is to increase jump range by reducing weight and to reduce heat by turning off (or just not carrying) unnecessary modules. For those crazy enough to attempt the Buckyball A* race this goes doubly so. Squeezing an extra 2ly on your jump range could make the difference between a 12hr run and a 13hr run. Hell, I'm even considering leaving the gin behind.
