News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

I provided you with the quote from Ed which was backed up by original quote he responded to. I actually saved you the good bit of the work. The insight as it is has been shared a good few times now so the understanding you are trying to share with people is ill informed. Please go ahead and continue to dispute the only decent source of information we have on this topic. It just looks silly when you do.

Jim... I don't think you're silly. I just think the information hasn't been clearly provided, and I'm not convinced you know with absolute certainty the facts of how this operates. I've provided quotes. You've provided quotes. Some 300+ posts later, people are still unsure, and there is no yellow boxed forum user telling us otherwise.

That would be nice, wouldn't it.

Also, everyone should just claim their Steam keys. As soon as the massive demand dies down and stops breaking the servers.

Got my key

For those who don't want to re download the full game. Copy the ED Launcher folder to
C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/ and rename it to
Elite Dangerous before installing through steam. It should look for existing files and only download a few new ones.

Yes! It can only mean one thing! That if you purchase through the ED store, the money goes to ED, regardless of a Steam account. I got that too.

On the contrary:

By generating a Steam key all future purchases made with your Frontier account will also be associated with your Steam account
but sticking with the EliteDangerous.com store remains the best way to support ongoing development with 100 percent of your money on future purchases
We especially appreciate it when you buy direct from us.

Why do they even mention this when you don't have a choice? Steam doesn't sell add-ons, you are going to buy from Elitedangerous.com anyway, so what is the purpose of them telling you to stick with them?.

Future paid expansions will be sold on Steam using its DLC distribution system, I assume.

It is dependent on what products ED sells through Steam. If you're going to buy, they prefer you to purchase your skins or other microtransactions via their website.

Jim is not the one looking silly, trust us. But please do respond to the staff member and the provided quote he answered to. It's clear from a staff member who likely has to be careful on the wording used due to the nature of the agreement. But any quote you have provided has not supported you really.

But the point about believing a staff member stands until he retracts, further refines or we hear from another staff member. This is the sensible point that has been made.

I know you have a great liking for Steam and that's fine, but right now there is no must use reason to get the game in steam. Handy features, sure but no deal breaker.

Yeah, that's a fair interpretation. We don't think of it as a tax though, just part of working with third party retailers.
For people to actually make an informed choice it would be good is the Partner Keys bit of the store would explicitly state the full effect of 1) claiming the key, and 2) then redeeming it. I've only gone so far as "CLAIM A KEY FOR ELITE: DANGEROUS" because I daren't do any more to see if the next step contains such information/warnings.

Just want to let everyone know that if you're waiting for a reply from Frontier then I'd expect to wait a while.

It's 11pm in the UK and we're not likely to get a reply for at least 9 hours)

No "Partner Key" Menu Item with Chrome, but with Firefox. Strange....
At first try, i got a message like "Error Contact Support" but just tried again and then it worked.
Had uninstalled all Elite Dangerous stuff (Main Game + Beta via launcher, then the launcher via Windows. Then deleted the left off folders manually) and now downloading with steam. *yay!*

I think the questions we're searching answers for are "What is the entirety of what I am agreeing to when I activate my account via Steam". This doesn't seem to have been answered. Forgive me if it has in an official capacity. I have not seen it, and if it HAS been answered, clearly and concisely, perhaps this conversation thread could demonstrate that it isn't prominently displayed well enough.

I think a great many of us have a liking for Steam, which is more than obnoxiously apparent ;) This could be part reason for the popularity and frequency of this topic's update.

The Steam debacle has been less than smoothly handled but, I look forward to Elite's continued expansion and success.

I don't see a Partner key Menu. Is there an issue with chrome? Should I try a different browser than?

It won't let me log in. I guess compensating for the remporary increase in demand isn't financially viable.

Yay market. :)

Feugo, we can all hope that Elite continues to be successful as it is a wonderful game. But you are wrong to state your question as you have, it's a straight up discussion on information posted by a staff member. We'll never know any further details I would imagine because of the commercial agreement. Nice try in the deflection though.

I do notice again however, that you have not deigned to respond to that. That will just make people wonder what you are trying to say and view your posts with suspicion.

Yes, try firefox. Chrome didn't showed me the Partner Key. I've even checked it back and no, no menu item on chrome, but on firefox.

Looking forward to be listet among the Top 99 current most users online games on steam* and also to track my hours spend on the Elite universe. :)

*(It's about 3400 Players online at the moment.)

I have been sitting here reading page after page of people going on about the steam key.

This is my experience from working with devs that have had their own shop as well as steam availability:

If you purchase the game via steam then steam takes a cut

If you purchase the game from the devs and link your account to steam it costs the devs nothing so they lose nothing.

If you purchase content through steam then steam takes a cut

If you purchase content from the devs directly then it is associated with a linked account and available for use in steam, steam however does not get a cut of anything sold directly to you by the developer.

The devs statement about wanting to show support and have 100% of the money goes to them simply means by all means play the game via steam but if you purchase any addon content do not purchase it through steam rather purchase it direct from the frontier store so steam does not get a cut.

Now no doubt someone is going to come and pick this apart and if you want to spend all night debating it then so be it, but from my experience that's how it works.
