News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

Ahh Star Trek fan....maybe?

The point of you not responding is you have had it clearly stated to you with links provided by the staff member. Check post 367 and your answer in 369 on page 25. You were provided with a clear chain and ignored it. There is other instances where the same data was provided that you must have read to respond. People will be suspicious because it will appear you are just trying to get a rise out of people.

Jim... are you refering to where I addressed this here?

@Jim

It's a big thread, no? ;) I've looked up everything I've seen Ed say on the subject, which seems to be just the initial post. As far as a search pulled up for me. This is what he said:

"This won't affect how much you pay for the game or for paint jobs, but sticking with the EliteDangerous.com store remains the best way to support ongoing development with 100 percent of your money on future purchases. We especially appreciate it when you buy direct from us, but we're happy for you to play how and where you like. Just enjoy the game, and fly safe Commanders!"

So, if you buy through the store, you're fine. No where does he say that a part of proceeds go to Steam. In fact, all he is doing is saying that if you want to support ED directly, buy through the store.

I'll admit, it is a bit confusing, and could have been more clearly stated, but I suspect Frontier isn't entirely wild about so many people having the option to purchase through Steam. I wish they'd be a bit more understanding about how profitable this is going to be for them in the long run, providing such an ease of service and purchase for so many people, instead of, perhap unintentionally, dissuading the current player base from following through... but [shrugs].

Frontier just needs to understand that people are going to be buying. Anyway you facilitate that is great. And they need to make it clear, from their own mouths, how this functions, because there are a LOT of passionate people wanting to do their best to help out Frontier.

I'm just not crazy about the confusion people are having, and the inconvenience, or personal wants and desires they may be putting aside, because of a misconception.

You are still supporting Frontier if you get your Steam key. Buy through the store if you want to help them directly. Ed said as much.

Honestly, Jim... I don't even know what we're doing here anymore. This is starting to feel like the Spanish Inquisition... and I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition. But then again... no one ever expects The Spanish Inquisition. DUN DUN DUH!!!!

The Fact is, no one knows for sure what the exact details are. Including you.

Another fact is that those of us who do have an understanding of how Steam functions have a pretty good idea of what is going on here, and I just see a bunch of attempt to dissuade people from activating their keys... for some strange and unknown reason.

Lets quit it. Frontier has provided keys. They want us to enjoy the game. It's rather obvious they are supportive of this, as they have done so and given us access. Tons of people are activating keys right now. Lets stop spreading misinformation and needlessly worrying players about possibilities that have no basis.

Ed said so himself, you want to support Frontier directly, buy your products directly through the ED store instead of the Steam store.

... but we're happy for you to play how and where you like. Just enjoy the game, and fly safe Commanders!

Or, buy from the Steam store! Ed just wants us to enjoy the game.

Can i just give FD like $100 for credit of future paint jobs before i get my steam key? Honestly i will hold off on the steam key and give more money to FD, once....if i get bored of ED and want it in my uninstalled library of steam then i'll generate the key. Is there a limited time on generating steam keys?

There is a difference between generating the code and actually using it, nothing stopping you generating the code so you have it

Hi I redeemed my Steam key before I found out they take a cut on all future skin purchases from FD...so now I pretty much regret it. Also, Steam wants me to download the game (which is already installed in an FD directory) If I tell Steam to install it to the FD directory it's already installed to will it reset my account and wipe my save out?

You're fine. That is not necessarily true about skins. Just buy through the EliteDangerous store and Steam won't get their cut.

Try logging in via your old client, you shouldn't have to download it, Steam is just prompting you. All you've done is unlocked Elite on your Steam account. You can now access it on any machine you have Steam on.

Mine redownloaded the full 5.4GB again on steam.

I then unistalled the old installer and deleted the Frontier_developments folder but left the Frontier Developments and this kept all my settings and gave me 8GB back :)

Well, I mean, that's what I'm going to do ;) I was just trying to make it easier for someone who seemed a bit concerned about the download. So you feel like the Steam version gave you a bit more memory space back, eh? Be interesting to see what mine looks like.

Thanks for the reminder on setting. Need to make sure I keep that file.

Thanks for your replies. I tried logging on with the FD installer and it worked fine but Steam still wants to download it....I really don't want to have to start up Steam every time I want to play ED...I wanted the key in order to leave a nice review of ED on Steam but I really don't want to do that at the cost of having to always go through Steam

No problem, mate. I do this all the time with Humble Bundles. Once you've put your activation code in, and it accepts it, you're good. Click next until it prompts to download, then cancel. You'll see Elite Dangerous in your inventory. You do NOT have to download the steam version. Like I mentioned, just cancel. The game is tagged to your account, and you can use that version whenever you do desire. Just click it to download.

Sounds like you can log into your old client just fine. I did this with Firefall. Had the old launcher and used that one instead of Steams and I never had issues.

If you're using the standalone client already, you shouldn't have to boot up Steam.

This. It's normal procedure for Valve to take a cut off all sales that happen *through their storefront*, not from a dev's storefront, there the dev gets a 100%. This is pretty much exactly what's stated in the official statement made here on the topic.

Yet, instead of going with that, people are basing everything on Ed's response to a quote, where he wasn't even addressing that part of the quote but something else entirely. And yet somehow, even though it contradicts his opening post entirely, the interpretation that Valve takes 30% off all future sales has to be the truth. The mods ran with it, and everyone else since has ran with the mods statements.

I think you do need to re-download it, because Steam installs games in its folder. Perhaps there's a way to link the existing install folder, but I'm not sure.

You don't. Just activated my key right now using Safari on my phone. Apparently Google Chrome is not being supported very well currently, where I see the majority of conflict. I'm on my Ubuntu machine away from home and it added ED to my Steam library, then prompted to download, which I accidently acknowledged, then failed because it's Linux and it isn't supported for that OS. Regardless, there is Elite Dangerous, on my Steam account, in my Library, without any need to download. Safe and tucked away for when I want it.

I've heared people say they can log in via their old clients fine.

I ended up copying the Frontier folder into the steam directory and so Steam didn't download the whole game--it's doing an 8min download as we speak and then I'll be able to start it from Steam if I want to...I made a new shortcut to the FD Launcher and the game appear to still work fine from it's new location when I start it with the FD launcher...so all's well that ends well.

I would advise anyone to take Fuego's posts with a big grain of salt. He is currently deliberately spreading mis-information on what we know about the situation based on what Ed from FD has told us. For example, he can't even be bothered to acknowledge pages where he'd be proved wrong.

I advise everyone to take EVERYTHING that EVERYONE says with a big grain of salt. Especially people trying to dissuade you from activating your Steam key of which you so passionately requested, and of which Frontier graciously granted, after much time and deliberation.

It is yours.

Get your key. Do not listen to the Chicken Little's and their "Sky is Falling" story.

Fuego you are really being puzzling here. You have once more not looked at the posts provided which prove you wrong. As a result as things stand you are spreading mis-information and clearly epitomising a certain type of behaviour.

You didn't address it where you quoted, you only referenced the earlier post. This only stands to reason that if you were to try and answer the points which have a basis, you suspect you would fail. You have been invited to address the right posts and have not.

I have already acknowledged several times no one knows the exact details, this seems to be another thing you are "missing". You are also assuming I don't have knowledge of how Steam works or their processes. You know what they say about assumptions.

You and everyone else has been given the reason based on the official information that has so far been provided by a member of FD. You are blatantly ignoring it and it's making you obstinate.

It's also kind of disrespectul for you to view FD staff in that way.

Yep, now we know that you can't be taken seriously. Smh...

Jim... I honestly have no idea what you're talking about. And to be frank, I feel that is you who are spreading concern and misinformation without any proof, ignoring posts previously stated by the community... and that one post Ed made at the top of this thread.

With all due respect sir, I feel we've exhausted the corpus of clues thus far provided to us by the developers and must now wait for another official statement. In the meantime, lets not seed doubt in the minds of those eager to receive the gift Frontier has provided us.

It's just poor taste, I feel.

I was talking in regards to installation, not activation. Steam may not recognize (I can't test this atm) the pre-installed Elite launcher/ install folder. :)
