Do NOT get a "free" Steam key if you want to support Frontier

Let's just hope the update is pushed via Steam's CDN not just Frontier's network. I'm sitting at less than 2MB/s right now (downloading the beta), I should be sitting at closer to 7MB/s.

updates will come via ED launcher not via steam

That's only if you are using FD own updater. If you install the complete game thru the stream library after powerplay is released it should be thru steam own service.

for me i use steam every day so having it on steam is better for me also can track my game time and in the end it will come down to ppl like me and you one who dont often use steam VS ones like me

Eh I also use Steam every day (http://steamcommunity.com/id/tanepiper) (well not every day, I also have a life) so you might want to check your facts first. I even usually have some money sitting in my wallet when it's not been spent on another Steam sale.

And because of that, still don't see the point of adding it.

The fact that they gave us steam keys means they decided it was a wise business strategy. We have ZERO insight to the contracts involved and everything in this thread OP is based off completely unconfirmed information. With this in mind, my thoughts are:

a) FDev are fully aware of the contract with Valve and they still gave us the keys, they would not have done this had they thought it was detrimental to them and/or the game.

b) See point a - if they are fine with it then I am fine with it.

Stop trying to make a nice gesture in to some weird guilt trip. (that goes for the OP and Ed Lewis with his ambiguous posts)

lets see better way of keeping up with your friends that say dont play ED so you dont have to Alt tab to see what they say but not every one going to be like me and YOU! i didnt see a real reason not to add it was gave to me and i used it if ED really cared about that big whopping 30% they would have not gave us a free key to use or not to

Exactly this. It always strikes me as weird when people start threads like this in game forums. It never makes a lot of sense. We can trust that FD knows better than us what it is doing and what makes financial sense for them. So if a Steam key is a convenience to you, then go ahead and get one and go on with your life knowing you have not hurt your beloved game maker.

On a related note (but off topic I know), when buying physical copies of games, some people don't seem to understand that the game maker already made their money from any given physical copy of the game. Your buying that physical copy does not make the game maker wealthier; you are just compensating the middle man who sold you the physical copy the original sale cost plus profit. The best you can argue is that by buying the physical game you are increasing the demand for the game and thereby encouraging the middle man to stock more copies of the game which does earn more profit for the game maker.

this ^^^ they got my hole 100% back at December 1st

Yup. OP appears to be on some sort of Social Justice Warrior trip.

Have any of you even tried linking them yet? If you did you would know that FD worked out some agreement with Valve that you still launch the game through FD's launcher even when you load it through steam.

IE:

You open steam

You hit 'play game' on E: D

This opens the FD launcher

You log in like normal and launch like normal

There is no store access on steam for accessories and I imagine the expansion packs will be directly through the FD store as well, which is why they have this particular agreement with Valve. If the game extra purchases are not going through Steam directly it's pretty safe to assume that they are not getting any cut of those sales.

Valve take 30% of anything sold on Steam. That's how they operate. If you tie your account to Steam and but in game items from there you do indeed cost FDev money.

I never use Steam if I can help it.

They gave out Steam keys due to the epic tantrum half the community threw when the game came out on Steam.

Truth. I can confirm that this is exactly my experience when launching ED via Steam.

Read point a and point b in my post and get off your moral horse for a minute to have a chill.

Understand that Valve are a business and they haven't become a multi-billion dollar corporation with a mere 250 employees by being generous.

Understand the scale of the Christmas-voting turkeys who demanded Steam keys from the very first bank holiday weekend the Steam release was announced.

Understand that the devs have already pointed out it costs them money going forward to do this.

Valve have basically stopped making games now because Steam is such a wonderful cash cow. Such a monopoly is pretty toxic in any industry.

Valve certainly aren't doing it for nothing. It's reasonable to assume there is costs for FD in each permutation where Steam is involved, but we will never know exact details.

I understand all this, cupcake, but it still doesn't change my answer: please see points a & b in my earlier post. Thank you and have a smashing weekend. :)
