vulture: fixed or gimballed?

Not anymore. They are changing it in PP so gimbal weaps wander with no target selected. Silly, but that's what they're doing.

Wrong. It's a bug. Don't worry, it'll probably be fine. The QA user is often a bit bewildered and randomly declares stuff to be working as intended until someone tells him/her/it/them what's actually going on. There's form in this respect :)

Well, in the original PP beta notes, which can't be found, they said gimbals will wander with no target selected.

Edit: in the same thread in your link where they're talking about the wobble Frontier QA "Hi there, can I ask you how significant was the wobbling and if there were any other guns that were like the pulse lasers?

As far as I know gimbaled guns wobble by design, so unless this there is an insane amount of wobble, this should be right

"

Maybe we'll have to wait until PP final to see how severe the wobble is. Morbad called it "crippling" except at close range.

Why is it that so few know that when chaff is deployed, you de-target and your gimballed weapons behave as fixed?

The only difference is dps. fixed do more, but gimballed guns help you miss less.

This is not true. Gimballed weapons when you de-select your target do not behave the same as fixed weapons. Fixed weapons do actually gimbal slightly, which makes a significant difference when you attack from a bit further away. When you de-select someone with gimballed weapons, they are more fixed than fixed weapons.

Edit* It has been pointed out to me that this effect is caused by a less obvious reason. When you target a distant ship and turn your ship away so it is not in your sights with gimballed weapons, they do behave as fixed as they converge to a point. Only when the target is in the gimballed arc do gimballed weapons begin to gimball. But the issue is when you de-select a target, the gimballed weapons have no target to converge so their spread is greater then fixed weapons if you have your target 750 metres or further away. There is a way around this that is quite difficult to pull off. When you have gimballed weapons, and your target deploys chaff, you can target a ship that is 7 Km away. So long as you do not put that distant target with-in the gimball arc of your weapons, they will converge. But this is a lot of messing around, and there is not necessarily another target for you to select when interdicted for example, when chaff is deployed, fixed weapons are superior.

Best sustained dps will be 2 pulse lasers due to the low power drain. Meaning you will be able to continuously firing at an Anaconda until it blows up.
Quickest way to kill will be 2 beam lasers, but only up to about Viper size. Anything bigger and you drain your power and have to wait for recharge. An option would be to have one beam on each trigger to control power drain more, and that adds an extra element to the fight.

I love the combo fixed beam+gimballed cannon because the fixed beam is all you need on the smaller ships; they are down in a few seconds. And the gimballed cannon adds great extra damage with little extra power drain against the bigger ships. But for me, the fixed beam is tiresome to use because you have to work hard to keep it trained on your target. If you can get close to your target you are almost always better off with gimballed beam also, and you keep your weapons trained on your target much more with much less effort. As mentioned earlier here, if chaffs are fired, just release target and use the gimballed weapons as you would use fixed.

But bottom line is that it all comes down to your own play style and preference.

Fixed. The dead zone at close distance only really impacts a few ships (eagle is the most obvious) and those ships are the ones that are easiest to kill anyway. Fixed weapons keep my aiming skills up, and I find the drifting on gimbals annoying; particularly above 1km gimbals miss a lot of shots that I would easily hit.
Agreed regarding the annoying drift of the gimballed. I also am almost always better at firing fixed weapons at range. But close up I will have gimballed weapons trained on my target much more while maneuvering around, and can fire for longer periods because of it. And the drift is not so apparent.
