How long will it take to make it to Elite status and do we get a badge?

What I think is that when I do reach ELITE rating (or even before I do), I might just hang out at core worlds and help newcomers get to grips with the game if I get tired of exploration.

EDIT - sorry if this post seems off-topic. Everybody's just seeing ELITE rating as the "end". I just see it as a statement of how long you've been playing. Even if ELITE rating is still based on kills, eventually everyone will have killed enough to be rated ELITE. All it takes is time, not necessarily skills.

I see this as very honorable idea. I will try to help new comers too (after getting my share of practice). Do I smell idea of new player organization here? :D

Think of it less as an "organisation" and more like a "culture". Let it be known among other games that the people of ED are nice and friendly folks (regardless of whether they're playing pirates or traders or bounty hunters), and not just out to kill you in PvP. Before the game is even launched, people already have a mindset to KILL THE OTHER GUY. Just look at the various threads - people talking about "farming", about how not to have an "unfair advantage" etc.

To me, MP = playing with people, meeting people, going on missions with them etc. This seems to be in direct opposition to everyone else's definition of MP *shrugs*

In fact, having "ELITES" around newbie areas should be seen as a "comforting presence"... don't mess with the new guys, or we'll be comin' for ya! instead of "geez all ELITES! I'm dead!"

Someone to see as example? Jeez, that's so....retro and old school, I LOVE it! :)

I don't mean to derail this thread, but maybe my contribution to this might have been lost.

My point was simply - "Do not view ELITE status as an ending".

Right now people just seem to be thinking that way. At the end, we should get a decal, a mission, etc. So after that, what? "Roll a new toon"?

ED is the game I've been waiting 30 years for. It promises to contain an evolving universe. It should be that you would be on the same "toon" forever and ever (unless you're playing Ironman) because the Lave you knew 6 months ago, is not the same Lave now (evolving universe remember?). You should not run out of things to do in an open world, and viewing "ELITE" status as an "ending" would cement that thought in your mind.

"YES I MADE ELITE!! I BEAT THE GAME!"

Then people would ask for "end game content"... "more raids"...."this is how you beat that raid at Alpha Centauri".... "This is the best build for being a pirate"... "this is the best build for being a trader" etc etc.

I don't want this to become another MMO... :(

But if the ELITE status could become another non-tangible (not another badge, not another mission) meaning in this online Universe, all the better!

As I’ve suggested maybe you need to keep on top of your game to maintain “Elite” as better players catch and raise the bar. Plus they can add so much for instance a Disaster on a System requiring as much help as it can get. I’d be really disappointed if there was not an Evil generation ship that arrived to mix things up in a part of space. It could make players evacuate a part of space and have player rush to fight to save systems or slow it down. Plus we have the good old Thargoids that will be in the game. :D

Perhaps a relative of that character if you wanted to RP it. Being able to leave something behind as a legacy for that new character would be cool but then you aren't really starting over and just giving yourself a leg up.

Elite Trader ->
Elite Passenger carrier ->
Elite Explorer->
Elite Miner->
Elite Bounty Hunter->
Elite Pirate

All in 1 Commander By then i shud have a privat Trophy cabinet in My captains quarters inside a pirate base in a obscure astroidfield. :D

Then its time to do it all over again in Iron mode.

Just gotta love the contradictions in these types of posts.
"I wanna play this forever but please I don't want this to become another MMO!"

News@11 MMOs are meant to be played "forever" because most of them are endless hamster wheel grinding games, grinding for reputation points, shoot X of Y mobs for a title, etc., grind enough reputation points with faction Y so you can buy the special helmet.

Classic WoW !
Re-Do the exact same mission 150 times and get a hat for your character.

This is why themeparks fail, blame the spoiled gamer of today who cherry picks his playstyle (e.g. "I only want to do co-op!" I don't want any player competition "forced" on me! I want to play online multiplayer but I want my single player experience, online! ")

yeah so you get your NPC grinding reputation missions for all eternity because NPCs are what they are, scripted predictable and boring bots which should only spice up multiplayer but not be the "core feature".

But hey that's just my opinion, I just don't care to grind for titles and badges in any MMO.

Just like in any themepark MMO you'll only compete against NPCs, there is nothing unique to achieve, sooner or later everyone will have that special badge, then what? Does the real cool stuff start happening then?
Elite player factions competing against each other starting to take over the universe? "Endgame"?

Or WoW endgame? Kill mob Boss X 100 times for another reskinned hat or armor piece? Themepark MMOs are ridiculous, I always celebrate when another one shuts down or goes F2P.

New flash - MMOs have an "ending". It's the level cap. Everybody screams for "end game content" when they reach level 50, level 100, whatever. Once you reach the level cap, then what? You've done all/most of the quests. You've been to every zone. You've done it all on this character. Then what? You ask for "end game content".

Devs for MMO, failing to come up with new "end game content" frequently enough, throw in "grinds" to keep players busy while they try to come up with new content. In many cases, the new content includes MORE grinds to keep players busy grinding yet a new reputation or a new shiny item, while they continue to look for new "end game content". It's a cycle.

Because there is an ending to MMOs (and the game mechanic says it is an end), there is an END. MMOs can't be played forever because eventually you will still get tired of having 100 characters all doing the same thing over and over to reach the level cap.

But even assuming you are right - "MMOs are meant to be played forever" and your examples of grinds. EVENTUALLY, given enough time, everyone can grind everything (assuming no new grinds introduced). And then, what? End-game?

ELITE has no end-game. Reaching the status of ELITE should not be viewed as an "ending". The Universe when you're Harmless and when you're ELITE is still the same, no magical new zones open up for the players. My point still stands, and there is no contradiction.

what's your point? cause I don't see it, I just see more contradiction and only arguing about semantics. You say MMOs have an ending, You say Elite has no end game (whatever you define by endgame) but reaching Elite status (=rep grind max level) should NOT be viewed as the ending? Then what, go back doing the exact same stuff you did at the beginning of the game? Everything is the same from start to finish, only the ships change? Well then this game is over in 200 hours max, that is far from any average MMO player's gametime.

but you say the end of an MMO is the level cap, so what is the difference between grinding a level number or a reputation number or a badge? Seriously? you grind to level 100 or whatever the current level cap is in Wow, then you either grind some other number to get more levels of reputation. Oh and "Raids", people grind them too over and over and over again, they just enjoy their little hamster wheels.
You can play WoW or any other MMO forever until you've maxed out everything and played every class, people play these monstrosities and even think they have fun with that type of gameplay, chasing meaningless carrots on a stick like a title or a hat with +1 more crit rating than the one they had before.

Is there a 'race' on to make it to Elite and do early big backers have an unfair advantage?

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but frankly I couldn't care less about rankings or awards. That's just not what interests me about ED. I intend to play it the same way I've played all the previous games in the series - as an explorer. If extensive exploration eventually leads to some sort of reputation in the game that's nice, but it's not the object of the game.
