Out of Fuel? - Explorer Rescue Service, The Fuel Rats

Count me in

I plan on outfitting a Type Six as a long range fuel tanker

(in real life I would have had a large cargo of emergency fuel so don't give me the realism lecture) -

1.3 will add Auxiliary tanks
But I see people often Downgrade their fuel tanks for larger [single] jump range so.... deliberately ditching extra fuel for less weight....

If you go out again, don't forget that the economic setting is very fuel efficient for moving though unscoopable sectors

Good luck

Anyone know if you can actually scoop to fill the additional auxiliary tanks.
If that is the case, you could build an asp with an 8t auxiliary tank, stock up on drones and if you have to, make additional runs to nearest scoopable star if more than 8 tons are needed.
It would also allow you to run out with an empty fuel tank for extended range.

Can't test this right now....

OMG guys, I think I may need help soon. I'm 6 Kylies from Sol and **** just got real.

I feel so unsafe now.

Will pay with Bauxite...just one.

In other news, not ATM but once I'm back in civ in a few weeks or a month or something I'll probably join in one aspect or another. I live in Australia and have a full time job though so time is limited.

Hmm, so let's see. A drone is 1 T, sits in your cargo hold, and gives 1 T of fuel on use, and then blows up. What's a good number of drones to carry? 32 would tank the jump range quite a bit...

Most ships can get a reasonable distance jump in for 2 or 4 T of fuel. The most fuel a single jump can use is determined by the FSD type - see here - http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Frame_Shift_Drive

From that, thinking that using economical jumps, what would be the least fuel a fuel rat should carry? 4T? 8T?

I'm planning an a maximum of eight drones and an eight ton auxiliary tank - any more, and I'd have to sacrifice shield or scoop size. (And in the latter case, Ziljan will come and strip me of my explorer rank, and we can't have that. :) )

Not willing to travel out just to help someone since im usually very busy but this is the loadout I will be using to explore, anyone close by that needs help and I will divert up to 2/3KLY to give them enough to jump to a scoopable. Otherwise I expect that I'll get home with a full cargo rack :)

Either way that perfect 38LY jump range should come in handy when navigating the core/route plotting.

Count me in as well. Can't guarantee a response time but will help if possible.

Question though - the new fuel tanks are they refillable on the go (via fuel scoop) or only at stations. ( I would expect the latter)

Please count me in, I'd be happy to help without charge. I'm hoping that 1.3 is not too far away now so I will stay close enough to human space to be able to fit these drones before heading out properly.

I am Cmdr Beornfrið (sorry about the awkward spelling).

If anyone is interested - that awkward spelling is accomplished by ALT 0240 on a full size keyboard

I had sacrificed range for max fuel so I really had thought that I could scoop my way around the universe and usually refilled at every star as I waited for the scanner to complete - so I know for sure I didn't miss a single scoopable star in my final run.. and that for me is the problem - I had no way of knowing where to go to find the correct type of star as there was no maps.. I have friends who play so could easily have waited for them to try to come get me - but what is to say they too didn't end up with the same fate.. do I risk calling them for help and have them stranded somewhere close to me, also out of fuel? And yes I know about the economical setting - but the zone was pretty sparse with stars and I just ran out of luck.

No dont be silly, we cant think this is going to be like the RAC, thats a silly idea.

its going to be like the AA

Alcoholics Anonymous? ;) I'm not sure we should be drinking, if we're flying with a cargo-load of fuel. It's bad enough that we're smoking..

You actually raise a very interesting point.

Since explosives and other cargo make your ship more... well, explody when hitting walls or taking fire. Do fuel tanks do the same thing? -> may be worth asking in beta forum to see if anyone can test because it could make it interesting...

Sign me up!

Heading out to rescue a stranded explorer sounds like exactly the sort of really fun, long range mission, I asked DB about yesterday (he didn't respond - grrr). Only slight problem is that I'm currently 3,500ly "down" from Sag A and I left my jump leads back on Galileo. Stay with your vehicle and I'll be with you as soon as I can.

Thank you; sorry, I should have said that myself but I forgot - I am complacent because it is a default character on the Icelandic keyboard layout!
