Out of Fuel? - Explorer Rescue Service, The Fuel Rats

In another part of the galaxy and in another role you would be my enemy and, if I enjoyed pvp, I might even be trying to kill you - but the Fuel Rats are about more than that.

Anyone is welcome to try, any time. Badgers are pretty bitey. :D

I wonder if there's some way of making this service more widely known? I have been trying to spread the word a bit to people in game but it would be shame if it languished. Perhaps you could email FDEV and maybe get a mention in the newsletter?

I did contact a guy who writes for GalNet and send him a pointer to this link. I think FDEV promote the GalNet news that is particularly good; hopefully we qualify as "good" even if not "particularly good"

I don't do Reddit but if there are any Redditors on the Rats, feel free to post... I think between this forum and that forum we've covered most of the people we are likely to reach.

One thing I am beginning to think is that maybe there's not much demand for our services. Which is fine. It means we don't need a lot of infrastructure or to figure out how to set up a Bat-Signal to alert everyone. Someone posting a cry for help here will get help pretty fast.

What's frustrating to me is that we nearly had a customer the other day, but he didn't follow the placard and ran himself down to 20 seconds of life-support before we heard about it. We could have saved him. He was right in human space. Think of it as evolution in action.

Don't worry; I have the grand total of one pvp kill to my name. It's not my cup of tea :D

You might be right, that there's not much of a demand, but it would be nice to think that once word spreads there'd be regular - if not frequent - 'customers'. It's times like this that you realise how convenient game-wide chat channels can be, I guess: Every Fuel Rat currently online would see the request the moment it was asked!

That puts you one ahead of me. :D

I was thinking about how to set up a flash alert channel. I just don't think it is necessary (yet?) It would be easy to do:
There are some fun things that could be done with flood-fill algorithms.* If each Rat friended 4 others and - in the event of hearing of a "customer" - checked in-game and messaged them - there's a pretty good probability that every Rat that was logged in would be notified very quickly, and - at worst - would be told redundantly 3 times.** So it wouldn't be too annoying. A notification flood-fill network would be easy to design with a loop at the root so you'd know that if you got your own message*** from (any of these 4 CMDRs) you were to stop sending notifications since the message had traversed the entire tree. Add sequence numbers with retransmit nodes and you have a super-reliable highly efficient multicast system.

(* this is the technique USENET news used to work on. amusingly, Paul Vixie and a few other folks who worked at DEC when I was there, implemented a flood-fill message bus for financial networks. the stuff that now carries Reuters' news is based on that code, Teknekron Information Bus)
(** likely far less, on average, since not everyone is logged in all the time)
(*** fill suppression)

Elite: Emergency Assistance

It is said great minds think alike. That can be true, but the idea then can be used to further your own goals or to further mankind in general. Elite: Emergency Assistance is an organisation set up of well informed responders who will volunteer to help all in need of critical refuelling. It operates as a voluntary group with expenses covered by future fund raising events (Unlike other profiteering groups!).

Elite: Emergency Assistance will offer all training as an open source for each and every commander in the universe but to be able to claim expenses the commander cannot have any other rescue affiliation. Training is open purely in the ethos that at least a life will be saved, even if they get extorted, better broke than dead!

p.s Was speaking away with Surly_Badger, we will be sharing all info we can get on helping to make rescues as easy as possible for everyone. Elite: Emergency Assistance will have the info all on steam group http://steamcommunity.com/groups/EliteEmergency Fuel rats are more than welcome to join the group! We will keep the two groups separate by their ethos and have a bit of fun ribbing each other 'Wannabe hero extortionists', 'Naive do gooders' etc.

Should be fun chasing after jobs! It's all still new and we still need to get the word out that rescue groups are out there in the Elite universe, hopefully adding some fluff like rival groups will make it more interesting.

We're faster. :)

Edit: J/k. We welcome our bretheren. Let's all keep it safe out there.

Free is pretty healthy :D

I've decided that anyone I rescue will be required to name their ship after me. I see this as an investment against a time where ship names are supported in-game. Then players will be going "what is with all the Surly Badgers"?

I probably shouldn't ask the same otherwise there'll be an outcry of "How the hell do I type the letter ð!?" :D

Still, the notion of the galaxy been over-run by surly badgers tickles me pink!

That made me chuckle :)

There is a small typo on the first page - 3.1 instead of 1.3, unless you know something I don't!

The first rule of super-ooper-duper-mojo-wagga-wagga-secret beta is you don't talk about super-ooper-duper-mojo-wagga-wagga-secret beta.

Cmdr Orange Sheets is in. Except that technically I'm currently out exploring. But when I come back, I'll kit up a tanker wagon and be prepared. You get gas for nothing and Vick's for free!

Count me in.

I'll also ship out a canister of Lavian Brandy to any unfortunate stranded explorers out there (a homage to the St. Bernard back on old Earth) :D

"Brandy helps settles the jitters when one has been stranded in the void"

I have a feeling that history is about to repeat itself... Firefighters in the early days anyone?

Exactly :) Should be fun! Hopefully we can share information on making effective rescues and the like, I might even be convinced to foot up making a web portal for both groups (and any others that pop up in the future) but I would have to find someone willing to make the site, I just dont have time to do that anymore sadly.

I envision some competitive events/drills between Fuel Rats and Emergency Assistance in the near future though!

CMDR Muffindrake would like to participate in this service. I may have been seen pirating quite a few people in an amount of systems, but I wouldn't dare harm an explorer as there is nothing to gain from that. I myself have been an explorer since I started playing and made my first 100k exploring - exploration remains my main source of income to this day.

I would probably kit out a Diamondback Explorer, an Asp or some other ship which I like at the moment to perform this job.
