The drops in frames whilst sitting docked are almost certainly networking related. Players joining/leaving the instance. I get a stutter in IL2 when someone joins/leaves the server, I don't think there is a fix for this, but getting your network device drivers up to date might be worthwhile. Network drivers can be very very finicky.

I'm not sure what you mean by "conventional" but default SLI in NV Control Panel is set to "auto select" which assigns PhysX to GPU #2. Putting PhysX on the CPU is not standard. I can't say what's going on with your rig, but PhysX on the CPU is going to be a big performance hit in general IF PhysX is even supported by the title you are playing. CPUs are not specialized to handle PhysX. That being said it is interesting you have no stutters when removing PhysX from GPU #2 and forcing CPU in the Control Panel.

Honestly I'm not even sure ED supports Physx (couldn't confirm/deny in searching). Only a few titles out there do. There are many more titles out there that do not use it as opposed to the ones that do.

Yes, I'm assuming ED doesn't support PhysX and hence I'm not taking a CPU hit. I honestly don't know why it might have stopped the stutter. Can't be a coincidence though. When I get time I'll play about with the SLI settings in all combinations and see if I can reproduce stutter and then fix it again.

Got a GTX 980 Ti coming at the weekend which I will replace the two 780s with, so SLI will not be a problem. Until I succumb to temptation and buy another 980 Ti, that is...

Yes its better with V-Sync ON. I also disabled the Games Cache in the ED Launcher Options (it suggests its for Beta to Release use anyway)

Hmmm I cant wait to try this when I get home, I reduced the stutter on my SLI 980 system by turning off vsync. It reduces the severity but its still there. But now I get tearing which I hate even more. I Have Friday off so was going to do more experimenting with the Nvidia settings this weekend.

Yeah I've noticed a lot of stuttering myself and yet in Beta is was silky smooth. I'm guessing the issues might be related to all the server problems they've been having of late. Who knows, maybe someone is doing a DDOS attack again. :/

I actually logged a bug report as I found that when the stuttering was at its worst, it could sometimes miss a controller or key up event if the timing was bad. Like a laser would stay on after I let go of the trigger and would have to click again to release it. But the other night while in the roids I lost control of my ship when the flight assist stayed off and nothing I did would bring it back. I had to quite the game and hope I was safe when I cam back. That was the worst thing that has happened, mostly it is just annoying. I have a fibre internet connection so it certainly at my network speed.

I had no stuttering before and now it's constant :(

Enter a station - stutter
Enter SC - stutter
Enter asteroid belt - stutter
Fire limpet - stutter
Etc etc :(

Try leaving Vsync disabled in E:D, and set a manual framerate limit to prevent the tearing. If you set the FPS limit to match the refresh rate of your monitor e.g. 60fps on a 60hz monitor, or 120fps on a 120hz monitor, it should stop the tearing happening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH9D__g1yqs this video shows one way to do it. Alternatively try forcing adaptive Vsync in the NVidia control panel so it only forces Vsync on when it can tell you have exceeded the monitor's refresh rate. Some people have reported it taking a moment to kick in so it doesn't completely get rid of the tearing, but it's another option to try.

Have the people here experiencing the stuttering used something like EVGA Precision X to monitor the GPU usage and see if it drops roughly when the stuttering happens? It could be the GPU being underutilized.

I get the exact same thing, in solo mode it never stutters, when I am alone it never stutters, but soon as a CMDR joins the same instance I get a couple seconds of stutter and then its back to normal.

You can disable vsync in the games graphics menu and set the framerate limit in the same menu to whatever the refresh rate is on your monitor, and that should prevent tearing. It works fine that way on my screen.

My last post is still in moderation so as an update, I just tested this out. Brand new PC this weekend, fresh install of Elite Dangerous and most up to date NVidia drivers. With SLI Titan X's I'm also getting stuttering. GPU usage is at roughly 40-50% on each card with SLI enabled and doesn't appear to be fluctuating at the time of the stuttering, and I'm running at 4k with max settings.

I'll experiment with a few more settings tomorrow.

My experience of stuttering with GTX750ti OC

Beta: Unkown didn't play
1.2 and earlier: lots of stuttering in supercruise around bodies, jerky frame rate in stations but otherwise ok in normal flight
1.3.0: Way smoother overall, very minimal stuttering close to planet in supercruise
1.3.01: A bit worse than 1.3.0
1.3.02: Improved again, like 1.3.0, possibly even a bit better.

Some things to try from the IL2 Cliffs of Dover forum -

http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16831

And this is a fix that removed stutter from my FSX installation - this actually originates from the simraceway.com forums:

STEP #1
1. click on windows key / start menu
2. in the search field type and run: msconfig
3. click on the services tab, and search "multimedia class scheduler". uncheck the checkbox
4. if unchecked, click ok. when asked, DON'T restart your system. do STEP #2 before restarting !
(also, you can go through the "startup" tab's list, If you have something that isn't necessary to start with windows bootup, you can take them out easily here. this can save boot time and memory, too)

STEP #2
1. click on windows key / start menu
2. in the search field type and run: regedit
3. on the left side open the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > services > AudioSrv
4. click on AudioSrv, and on the right side of the window there will be a list, search and doubleclick "DependOnService"
5. after you opened the little window, DELETE the "MMCS" part. only that part, leave the other 2 alone.
6. if you deleted it, click OK and restart your computer.

ACHTUNG ! you need to go through both step 1 and step 2 in order to fully disable this little imp !
I gladly help anyone who needs it, just drop some letters and I'll reply.

Stutters are the plague of all sim software and maybe this will help somebody.

Just for the record this did not work, it did introduce some less than interesting static during hyperjump lol. And also the Network Throttling registry tweak did not help either. It is not on our end!!

Same issue with stuttering in RES sites. I just tried Tar Stone's suggestion, which didn't help. Vsync on or off again no change. Then disabled the Cache check on the launcher which does help but does not remove the problem. This started with 1.3 for me, on 1.2 I could run the game on medium to high with no issues, but now its like I am on dialup trying to play a twitch shooter from the 90's witht he amount of hitching going on.

Phenom 9950 @ 2.6
4 gig ram
GTX 750 Ti with 2 gig vram with latest drivers on default settings for performance
win7 64bit

All ingame settings on low except for supersampling which is on 1 as I can't read text otherwise
Borderless windowed mode
I only have Voice Attack running in background, no browser/vlc etc

I have been doing lots of testing with settings inside and outside the game and I am thinking it may not be the graphics engine but maybe network as someone else has suggested.
I dropped to low res and was getting in excess of 200fps and still there is the occasional lag. Interestingly while mining if I have drones deployed and I am flying, when lag or stutter hits, the drones momentarily jump in front of my ship and zap back.

I find the same thing. Even in solo mode in the RES sites, I'm running over 60 frames per second and getting minor lag and stutter even though they have removed all the dust. Which looks ugly now by the way. Please put back the dust or put textures on all the asteroids.

In case anybody would like to read up on "The History of stutter as pertaining to the game Elite: Dangerous" (I could write a book LOL)...

This is the "main" bug thread that most of us in the Stutter Club (TM) have been using: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=120331 (there are some comments by FD staff in this thread). This refers to the "big stutter" or "macro-stutter" - as far as I can tell most people in this thread are referring to this type of stutter as opposed to "micro-stutter", which is a different animal.

If you would like to read more or are having trouble sleeping then PM me and I can send links to other threads. I have also been keeping note of all comments by FD staff on this topic.

Yes it is definitely macro stutter I am experiencing. stutter is something quite different. This is an obvious pause. Maybe my fibre network is too fast :)

I've noticed only big stutter while approaching a planet in certain systems and I assumed it's bandwidth related. Elite is actually really more graphic intense than I thought.

My main problem is temperatures. When I first got Elite I could run everything on Ultra at about 48-57c, v-sync off and good frame-rate. Every patch seems to have increased the CPU temps by about 2-3c. Now on medium settings I will get a consistent 63-67c. From what I know that's actually really high and I guess I'm going to have to get water cooling because a large heat sync and fan isn't cutting it. It seriously makes me wonder how anyone is running this on a laptop without emergency drops for overheating. Just for ref. when Elite is off I get 16-20c. Luckily I've been able to set my bios to jump ship if I overheat bad and it's only happened maybe 2-3 times.

Specs:
4.0-4.2 GHz Eight Core AMD
8GB Ram DDR3
GeForce GTX 970 4GB

Really hope water cooling helps because when you compare what's going on in Elite to other seemingly more intensive games, where I get about 42-45, all this empty space seems to really burn up my processor. I guess I'm just cheap when it comes to hardware what can I say?

Just wanted to add that it could be Windows 8.1 because it is the worst Windows I've used yet, lol.
