So, race summary! Uh... A bunch of stuff happened. Alot's back on top. Ughhhh... I got some work to do.

Be nice to play some 1.3 at some point, too. And get some sleep. Seriously, I got some world class jet-lag setting in. :p

So anway, maybe in the next couple of days I'll get it all straightened out. Or maybe not. You know how it goes. :D
Take your time, enjoy the sleep! I'm sure Bucky probably has a wicked hangover to add to the jet-lag too... ;)

ETA to Sagittarius: 12h ... This will be a long night. How did you guys entertain yourself?
Radio Sidewinder of course.. though im not sure I could do 12 hrs of tori chimes ads again.

Tranquility base here, the Roo has landed!
Welcome back Ez, be sure to check Alots bmps haven't been doctored for me , what he posted looked suspicious ;) get bucky to give them a good sniff.

So, back to business! Two weeks have gone by, and there's a lot of updates to get to! First off, HUGE THANKS again for Drakhyr taking upon itself to keep up with an unofficial leaderboard. As you can see I've seemlessly integrated his tireless work onto the Big Board:

I love the integration :D. Welcome back and I hope you had a good holiday!

ETA to Sagittarius: 12h ... This will be a long night. How did you guys entertain yourself?

1. Radio Sidewinder
2. Laptop next to my main computer, so that I could use it to write notes, read (and comment) on the forums, etc

Cheeky so-and-so. :D

If you like, I can upload the entire run to YouTube for you to inspect for inconsistencies. ;) :D

Radio Sidewinder, a couple of back issues of Lave radio and a LONG playlist of my favourite music including plenty of Hendrix, Doors and Primal Scream.

Oh, and for added luxury, surround yourself with the contents of an M&S food hamper ...

... altogether now, "port out starboard home posh with a capital P".

Back after a two-week self-imposed exile, Bucky will be back on the job updating the leaderboard and mailing out bumper stickers. From the looks of things, looks like we're gonna need another roll of stamps. ;)
Welcome back EZ, hope you had a good break, oh and a very professional job on the updated leader board by the way!

P.S. some dude called Denton has been looking for you, seemed pretty miffed.

So at 10.062 from Sol I noticed that the courier, while pretty decent most of the time absolutely hates Class A stars.. I started overheating right after entering a system with one:

I was pretty sure that'd be the end of my racing attempt.. But I'm still on my way :):

Now my HOTAS needs a battery replacement... Next time I'll actually buy a new one, not use an old one.. :p

Hello my old friend!

I crawled out of the bar on Galileo sometime last night and decided to head off early to beat the worst of the traffic, like all good Brits going on holiday.

In the end, it didn't take as long as you would have thought to get to Sag A* in a 1.4M ship.

Whilst I am very, very pleased with the time, I was on track for a much better time for the first 18 Kylies or so...then the GalMap absolutely slaughtered me, with nearly 54 minutes spent on the last 8 plots. Remember that I travelled 17 kylies last weekend just to make sure I had my magic numbers sorted, so I thought I would do better than this.

I tried absolutely everything to get a good time but the map just locked solid at 0 fps once a plot was started, I even had to exit (very, very slowly) to main menu to kill one plot (which worked). The map performance was very variable over the last 10 kylies. with frame rates between 5 and 15 fps just looking at it, let alone plotting.

Anyway, the last 811 LY was an exciting race against time - I wanted to break 11 hrs! I was at 10 hrs 21 mins, with a 25 Jump route to plot. 15.5 mins later I finally got a plot and was off. I don't think she was much below 75% heat for those last few jumps ;)

Here are some numbers for those who enjoy such things:

  • Running Bare had a max range of 34.9 LY, and a jerry can for a fuel tank
  • 795 Jumps, averaging 32.6 LY per jump (straight line, not actual, haven't calculated that distance yet)
  • 26 plots, totalling 1 hr 19 mins 21 secs
  • Average of 49 seconds per jump (including all that plot time)
  • Only 1 instance of 2 non-scoopables in a row, but lead to 2 replots to manually get past a cluster of browns
  • Not one emergency stop  but a fair few 'hot, sparky, clanging alarm' moments

Considering that I have exceeded the manufacturers limits on running at sustained high temperatures. Running Bare has come out of this very well.

Finally, the most important modification,

Red Paint does make you go faster, especially with speed stripes

Well, congratulations. It's all yours.

Even if I thought I could beat that time, which I can't say with any confidence, I won't have time to make a run anytime soon, because I just don't have enough free time to devote an 11 hour stretch to gaming right now.

I had to take time off work to get it in last time, and that's not something I can make a habit of doing, especially when I feel like I have very little hope of actually beating that time.

I simply don't think I'm capable of sustaining the level of focus necessary to be that close to perfect over the course of the entire run. Under 12 hours I could do. Under 11.5, maybe. Under 11? No, I don't think so.

So, in case anyone's wondering why Bucky and I were gone, a couple weeks back I illegally parked the Shipwrecked and Comatose at Parkinson Dock in Eotienses. The cop who left the citation failed to digitally certify the document or set it to "read only" so I changed the registration to "Felicia Winters" and wrote "Denton Patreus can suck it" on the signature line. Turns out the good Senator doesn't have a sense of humor and I had to take a little vacation in an uncharted region of space.

And in my absence, it appears that the galaxy has gone a little haywire, what with everybody marking the map in their favorite color and putting up boundaries and control points everywhere. If all of this is the result of my ticket, I'd just like to say, "my bad."

Welcome back! How were the jellyfish?

I'm just having to clean my morning coffee off the console and my copilots leg; I laughed it out my nose when I found out a parking ticket started the political bun-fight I've been watching in my rear view scanner for 6000Ly.

And your jet-lag? From my part of the galaxy you get it going anywhere, but the route you took is an absolute killer.

o7 CMDR

I have put in a lot of practice, but I do think it is possible to knock 30+ minutes off my time if you can get the GalMap working...

When I did the run, my single fastest splits would have put me on a pace for 11.5 hours. As such, if I could consistently do it the very best I've ever done it, I could do it in 11.5. That obviously isn't good enough. I know my limits.

Findings regarding PowerPlay and Its Effects on Buckyball Runs (current and future)

In a nutshell... almost no effect. "Civilizsed space will be hostile to the majority of players" (only to those who have pledged to a power), while technically true, is underwhelming. It was no more dangerous than taking a stroll in an anarchy system.

In order not to present a "wall of text" for people who are not interested, the rest of this post is placed inside spoiler tags.
Before I started my test, these are the conditions:

1. Friendly to Federation
2. Neutal to Empire and Alliance
3. Start location is Sol
4. ALLIED with all minor factions in Sol.
5. In SOLO mode - did not want players to muck up my tests :)

Since I wanted to test hosilities, I deliberately picked an Empire power to pledge to.. and who better than that hot chick Aisling? :D

After pledging, I noticed the word "HOSTILE" on my dashboard, where the usual "Speeding" and "WANTED" labels are. So now I'm supposedly in hostile space, in Sol.

I launched from Abraham Lincoln, and all ships are still GREEN to me. I saw a couple of neutral ships, they were supporting some other people (Edward and Archon something). They ignored me, I ignored them. Nothing happened.

I jumped into SC, headed for Titan. Primarily I just wanted to fly around and see what the reaction was. I got interdicted twice - once by "Federal Agents" belonging to that Archon guy (which I promptly dispatched and earned 600 cr for all 3 of them), and the 2nd time was by a Sol authority system vessel.. the cops. Interesting since I'm CLEAN and cops normally don't interdict "clean" players. So I dropped out and let him scan me. He's GREEN to me. After that he just jumped out with no shots fired.

Incidentally that was when I learnt Sol was under the control of Hudson. Maybe that's why I got interdicted by the cops (different PP faction) but no shots fired (ALLIED Federal Congress).

Step 2 test - jump to another Federation system where I am not ALLIED with the minor factions. So I did, to EZ Aquarii. Ships still GREEN to me, cuz I am "friendly" with Federation. No interdictions happened.

Step 3 - Empire system test. I picked ZELAND because it's under control of Patreus, directly opposing Aisling (the one I pledged support to). Jumped in, no "HOSTILE" tag. Interesting. All ships neutral, could see a couple of GREEN ships cuz they were traders from Federation. No interdictions all the way in to the station.

Step 4 - Alliance system test. I picked LAVE (good old Lave!). Nothing happened on the way to Lave. After arriving at Lave, about 50% ships were GREEN to me. Ah, probably due to being friendly for trading rares in the past. "HOSTILE" tag appeared. No interdictions all the way to Lave station.

As you can see, it's almost no difference whether you pledged in PP or not. It may make a difference if you're a trader or a bounty hunter where you may probably need to pay attention to who controls what, but for people like me who are mainly explorers, PP made not a lick of difference. It should also make almost no difference to future Buckyball Runs.

Still I clicked "LEAVE ALLEGIANCE" once I got out to about 400 LY away on my next exploration trip :)

I hate to tell you this, but it's not that simple.

First off, the reason you had no hostile tag in the Imperial system is that the Imperial Powers are not hostile to each other. Likewise the Fed Powers are not hostile to each other.

If you're a member of an Imp Power, 6 of 9 other Powers are hostile to you (including the #1 and #3 Powers at present)

if you're a member of a Fed Power, 7 of 9 other Powers are hostile to you (including the #2 Powers at present)

If you're a member of the Alliance Power or an independent Power, 8 of 9 other Powers are hostile to you (including the #1, #2, and #3 Powers at present).

Power interdictions seem to happen primarily in Control systems. In Exploited systems, I almost never get interdicted. However, it's not just in Hostile space that this happens! I get interdicted in my own Power's control systems quite frequently - probably somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3 of the times I return to Arissa's HQ system, I get interdicted between the star and the first station which is only 450 ls out. Sometimes I get interdicted more than once in that distance.

Being pledged to a Power means you get interdicted a lot more. It's just how it is. It seems to be worse in Control systems than Exploited systems, however. If you're able to avoid Control systems, it's not so much a big deal... but if you have to plot your race routes to avoid Control systems, you're not going to have the most efficient routes.

Again, as I've noted, this isn't going to stop me from running future races, but the effect isn't negligible. Not at all.
