News David Braben Guest Blog - on Xbox One and CQC

It was no secret we knew it would come to a console eventually seeing as that's where the majority of the market is.. however I don't think Elite in its current state is ready for a console release, the PC consumers are generally more forgiving as we'll still be around in years to come but releasing now on Console user base you need to get their attention fast or you'll be tomorrows trade in for the next game.

At present I can see the majority of them wont make if past the first 4 hours before switching off and never coming back due to either the current learning curve will be too steep as ED's interfaces generally don't explain things particularly well or the more savvy users will see the grinds for what it is and will ultimately play something more rewarding games for their limited available time, first impressions matter and it's current state isn't a lasting impression I would be happy imprinting on a new user base that are used to AAA products and polish.

My issue is that Elite at present is full of what most of dev teams would consider as "Placeholder" mechanics at best and yet since release there's been no major steps taken forward in terms of fleshing out the game as it so badly needs my biggest anticipated feature of 1.3 was the "major overhaul" of the mission system yet the missions seem no different from before except they actually work now and pay a little better, still no depth or any real sense of adventure seemed hardly a major overhaul.

My only hope is that the additional revenue brought in from consoles will be spent on expanding the team with some industry experienced members that can implement the in-depth game mechanics we come to expect from a "released" game and show us something worth sticking around for fast as it's obvious in this thread there is a lot of losing faith and concerned for the future of Elite.

brilliant post,good read.

not trying to start a war but personal opinion of gaming is that the more mature gamers, the hardcore if you will are on the pc ...we can tune our engines to max performance.

i have played all the consoles aswell since the atari 2600 bad bot back in the 80`s lol.....but a man gets to a stage wher he need some real challenge.

your post cheered me up,i can see a lot of the console quick fix generation not even liking the multiplayer aspect......"dude...like whres the lobby?"

let alone learning curves ha ha.

Next thing you know, there is a lobby in Elite... ;)

+1 what he/she said

I was expecting some xbox exclusive stuff. Access to an xbox beta, exclusive ship skins and decals and maybe test a new ship but testing a pvp mode when the current pvp community already feels marginalized and not taken seriously is a step too far.

Ten points to the first xbox player to work out how to pull their ethernet out when losing and then say it's intended gameplay though.

The curious comment I have on this, is that from where I sit, as a confirmed non PvPer, is that everything they have done since gamma is for you lot. And you feel marginalised?

i have to admit i had it on a zx spectrum....

its not the point! lol...

i have owned both these so called next gen consoles......they are money grabbing sheep machines, made to squeeze money out of people for a 8 year cycle.
already outdated graphics...how will the games progress in the next 8 years?.....not much really, the cpu and gpu inside them can only do so much.

sold the xbox, gave the ps4 to my oldest son.

anyway i digress, elite was released on many platforms....dont recall it being on a console back in the day though.....home computers was the way to play.
then again i could be wrong.

It did make it onto the NES oddly enough. :)

Daft thing about this game performance-wise? The biggest load on the graphics is when you are in the station. Low spec PCs are generally quite happy in flight and combat situation providing the area is not too busy. A controlled arena mode especially shouldn't have much issue with this.

ahh really...i didnt realise the dear old nes had its own lol....may have to youtube it to see what it was like.....i imagine it had the same vector graphics but with some colours on the lasers lol.

i dont hate consoles gentlemen,i just hate this current gen.....360 and ps3 made good use of there parts...and there was some great games.
but these new ones...from a technical point of view they are not a massive leap from the last....rushed out to meet the sheeple demands and exitement.

not worth the money they ask for them imo

No denying it now. Damn it, I kinda feel like crap inside. Another dream game gone down the toilet.

I blame the DDF members and their almost god like powers.

its not down the toilet....

Elite dangerous has gone by so much great stuffs implemented... and the original purpose never left of.

its still a wonderus galaxy to discover and live within.

these updates are cool and i guess are there to please any kind of audience.

but im sure the greater stuffs will come soon, as wel all dreamt....

and gotta give FD a clap, they worked really hard.... examples ( the newsletters each week, the multiples updates given , new ships , etc ).

i can say im pleased ..

Well, there's a lot of PR-talk in that blog post; so Trying to sift between the euphemisms I gather new content won't be arriving to PC/Mac for several months, then? That's a little bit of a downer, but I can deal with that.

But please please keep working on bugs for PC/Mac; The community is spending a lot of time talking about bugs and things that aren't working as expected; The poor pirates are about ready to go on strike!

Wouldn't hurt to make the game a little bit more hack-resistant, too >_> <_<, as that's another toxic cancer that is dragging down the user base.

In short, good luck developing the Xbox version, but don't forget about the people here in PC land, who were here from the beginning...

We are continuing to support the latest Powerplay release on PC - there's a patch being released this morning.

before the end of the year? i was hoping we would have seen planetry landings by then......

xbones mid range weak specs are going to stop this being what it could be.

watching that trailer made me so angry....its like here you go xbox cod kiddies a space shooter for you!

please dont dumb down this mature gamers space opera.......dont make me pledge to mr roberts

The main game remains exactly the same as on PC - we aren't 'dumbing' the game down.

Bit behind the times and just read about CQC. Unsurprising I suppose and not for me. But if thats your thing then so be it.

Doesn't particulalry sound like anything that would come under the statement of 'the game Frontier wanted to make' but I understand market forces and potential for future revenue.

With the introduction of CQC though could the idea of a PVP on/off for switch for Commanders be resurrected. If Commanders want to PVP they know where to go now.

It really saddens me to see some of the members here acting like a spoilt child. I for one welcome the xbox users. In the long run it can only improve the game with the extra revenue from it. We do not have a given right to scream about something that really does not effect you. We will get the arena combat. So why cry? I'm a backer and premium beta member my self and I do not in any way feel shafted or betrayed by Frontier Developments.

Please don't. Might as well release tractor beam module and invisibility cloak module. Oh, and new spells pack, like Fireball level 3 and Water Walking level 5, considering we'd have magic in Elite if these things happened.

You really and truley don't think the time spent on the Xbox arena race thing could have been better spent on fixing and and adding to the full game version and then releasing a properly working and fleshed out game onto the console rather than leaving two platforms with partially unfinished games would have been a better use of developer time?

CQC is completely opt-in so if you don't want to take part then you can choose not to.
