Elite / Frontier A Brief History and Guide to the Previous Elite Games

Do you know where I can find a summary of the Elite lore?

I'm not aware of a public resource that just summarises information with estimated canonicity. This is probably because Frontier have hoovered up the brain trust to reboot the lore for the new game. For example, Dave Hughes' galactic timeline was an audacious attempt to knit together the Elite and Frontier universes, but hasn't been updated since Michael set him to work extrapolating history instead of interpolating it.

I'd be happy to maintain a list of links or something if we can pull together enough information (still waiting on that PM drew ;)), but it'll always be quite scrappy until ED is released. For example, Allen has described the FFE journals as about 80% canon, which suggests the reference to the "Trade Centre Tower from Old NewYork" will probably be quietly forgotten.

Why not extend the wiki instead? I'd love to read about lore in the wiki. Who are the Federation and The Empire, and how do they differ? And the third faction - The Independents - who are they?

For those of us who are new to the Elite universe there are many basic questions needed to be answered somehow. For instance, I can't choose sides in the game until I know more about the different factions.

If I find that The Federation sell drugs to finance their war against the Empire then that faction is out of the question for me. If I find that The Empire made war against the Federation to force them into submission, then The Empire is out of the question for me. If the Independents are pirates, then that faction is out of the question.

So information about the lore is vital.

I'd love to read a condensed article about the history and factions in the eliteverse. There should be more about lore in the new elite-dangerous.wikia.com, Wookiepedia or wowwiki are good examples. I think ED needs a new wiki so people won't get confused with all the old stuff. I hope when the new frontier approved novels come out a more coherent backstory will emerge.

+1 to this!

It should be ok to copy this stuff into a wiki, right?

Literally copy/pasting might be frowned upon (copyright etc.), but using it as the basis for a better article sounds great!

A little word of warning though: be careful to cite your sources, as canonicity is a murky topic right now. I believe the Gazetteer is the only thing from the old games expected to be completely canon in the new one, so by all means reference e.g. the journals or the stories, just make sure it's obvious when you're talking about stuff that might not be true any more.

Yeah, it's a problem for those of us who want to read up about the history and lore of Elite that it's so spread around with bits and pieces everywhere. So I support the idea of gathering it all into one wiki.

Maybe the original authors of the stuff that's already written could sumbit their stuff into the wiki? I know, they might not even be here and read this, but maybe they do. I bet they're still interested in Elite and have discovered the new ED too. :)

Some of it might not be upto date with the new ED version, but at least it's part of the ED history and so it belongs in the new universe too. And any inconsistencies that might occur later, when we know more about ED, can be corrected.

Sounds good. Minor nitpick, but I think a valid point regarding the OP's text. Although you were given the name Commander Jameson, I think it may be worth making the distinction that the only person you "play" is yourself, or the role you choose for yourself, which I think is fundamental to the game and probably worth stressing in any description.

Bizarre and obscure Elite factoid, Rainbird (British Telecom) who got the rights to Elite on various formats, released a C64 and 16-bit game called Tracker which was a 3D node-based racing game with enemy AI units. This came with a novella which made mention of, and was supposed to exist in, the Elite universe.

The Amiga guys were writing a (WHDLoad) patch for it, but last time I looked they didn't have the save game function working.
